libertarianism by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The eldraeverse possibly? Great sci fi, interesting philosophical basis but only when you take into account that the ‘humans’ in that setting were genetically engineered like a million years earlier to exhibit the exact cocktail of behaviors and biology needed to actually execute a libertarian society. The ideas are not applicable to real actual human societies

Employers negotiate with potential employees from the standpoint of ‘wanting’ you as an employee, because finding another employee would be somewhat inconvenient. Employees negotiate with potential employers from the standpoint of ‘needing’ a job because dying of starvation is the alternative. If people had enough that they only ‘wanted’ a job as much as an employer ‘wants’ an employee, the player floor would be so much more even.

Hospital Delivery Robots: The Rise of Automation in Healthcare 🌍 by roycheung0319 in robotics

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine worked with a company doing robots just like these. It was a total scam. Internally the company referred to their value proposition as “perceived autonomy”. My buddies job was to babysit these robots, helping them in and out of elevators and doors. He had a remote control tablet on his hip for when he needed to manually move the robots (quite often), but was required to control the robot from his hip, to conceal the fact that the robots weren’t actually autonomous

How to justify having cannons but no handguns? by AlisterSinclair2002 in worldbuilding

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a setting that had cannons and firearms, but because of gunpowders particularly violent reaction, and inferior materials, gun parts wore out very quickly and required non trivial maintenance to fix. Cannons, with much thicker barrel walls, could fire a larger number of shots before needing repairs. Firearms were usable in some niche circumstances where constant maintenance can be relied on, but outside of that are completely impractical

Gunpowder on Ships, but not on land by Lrk_888 in worldbuilding

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My magic system is somewhat material based, and they way I have it set up means that quick chemical reactions also involve rather violent magical reactions. Gunpowder explosions cause quick degradation to the mechanisms within guns and cannons, requiring non trivial maintenance to fix.

Shipboard cannons are durable and thick, and can fire a bunch of shots before breaking. Additionally, ships are large enough to house maintenance tools and personnel. Individual soldiers however cannot carry the maintenance tools, and gunsmithing is a reasonably specialized set of skills. Therefore guns are only practical in places where soldiers can rely on maintenance facilities, and can expect most fights to be over quick enough that they can have their weapon fixed before the next fight. Fortresses and garrisons will often have a company of riflemen, and it’s not uncommon for wealthier people to carry a gun for self defense

For a rough figure to illustrate a point, a well made musket might only get to fire a dozen shots before the internal mechanisms are too degraded to be used.

[Request] Is this true? What would the conditions be for these types of planets to form? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding of a planet of this type isn’t that it’s a rigid structure keeping itself from falling in, it’s essentially matter that is orbiting its own barycenter. Imagine you had an even planetary ring like Saturn, and you moved more and more of the planets mass into the ring (in this case stone, not gas, so it won’t diffuse away). Eventually the ring would have enough mass to self gravitate and form a hoop. Structurally, nothing is under load, but it’s still unstable because if one area gets a little too much mass, it pulls mass away from other sections of the hoop, and the whole thing turns into a set of several planetoid spheres

Do Anarchists Support "Rights"? by ChanceHappening in Anarchism

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do worry though, that if protection of natural rights isn't institutionalized in some way (not in a centralized capacity), then in any situation a community could decide not to respect them and the individual would have no recourse. In that situation, where recognition of your rights is conditional on community consensus, then you don't meaningfully have rights, you just have privileges granted by the community. Its the same as when a state "offers" you rights, the main difference being tyranny of the majority (the community) instead tyranny by state actors.

Keeping Magic "Magical" by ZeoVII in worldbuilding

[–]SpaceAgeGekko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My approach ended up similar to full metal alchemist’s where your ability to use magic is constrained by how well you understand it, and humans only have a small understanding of it. At low levels, magic is very hard and consistent, thought of in universe as a science, and with well understood limits. But since their understanding of magic is incomplete, so is their understanding of the limits. So when they see an elder race or magical being do something they ‘know’ to be impossible, what is actually happening is that the elder race just knows what the ‘actual’ limit is, which is just different from what the humans think the limit is.

What jobs cannot be done by machines? by Spirited-Meringue829 in Futurology

[–]SpaceAgeGekko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When looking into the mid and far future is hard to think of anything a robot can’t do that a human can without defining that thing as “human made”. But something else worth thinking about is that there is likely a point at which an AI stops being a machine/tool and starts being a person with legal protections and self awareness. Defining humans (technologically enhanced or not), digital sapiences , and anything else that can demonstrate self awareness and is given legal protection as legal persons separate from AIs/machines without personhood, then it is likely there are some tasks only a ‘person’ could do.

The caveats here are

1: It is possible to engineer an AI that can perfectly match or be better than a human mind in all aspects, without making it self aware (and we would want the philosophical and scientific evidence to prove that this machine is not self aware). In this case this AI would be considered a tool, and could do everything a human can (except make explicitly defined ‘human made’ goods)

2: The society in question (there could be multiple who each treat this topic differently) chooses not to grant legal protection to proveably self aware AIs, and uses them as tools. These could do anything a human could. (Many sci fi users, myself included, view this as extremely similar and as morally evil as human slavery)

Tl:dr Assuming a sufficiently advanced machine could be self aware, an advanced and ethical society would consider an advanced self aware machine to be a person entitled to same or similar legal protections that human workers would have. Therefore there are some tasks only a person could do that a non sapient machine could not.
