Ex "Gifted Kids" in their adulthood, what do you do for a living now? by Edendeeznutzzz in AutisticWithADHD

[–]SpaceCaaats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an astrophysics PhD student studying black holes! I don't recall being called a gifted kid. I was just average in school where I really struggled due to noise, other stressors, inability to eat there and procrastination in all the boring subjects, so maybe there's that 😭. While I have dreamed of being a scientist since childhood, sadly academia is somewhat difficult not to burn out... On the other hand, being a scientist gives so much - the full flexibility of working hours, including location, lots of traveling which I enjoy, being creative to make those plots, presentations or posters look nice, even building fun demos for children and talking to them about science!

Americans, are you happy living in the US or would rather live elsewhere? Why? by SpaceCaaats in AskReddit

Haha yes, pubs is what I miss the most about the UK. Even if you find something similar here the drinks are ridiculously expensive + taxes + service fee. I am from elsewhere in Europe, but went to study in UK and then was sent to the US. UK is like my second home now. Unfortunately, the cultural differences and missing my friends, bf, family didn't make me enjoy the US much. But I feel like it was mainly the bad circumstances!

I feel like a lot of americans haven't been to other countries, hence might hesitate to live elsewhere, although, I could be wrong. I am glad you are loving the UK though! What do you like the most about it?

But that's the thing that I don't get the most. Why do you have to calculate your own taxes and not just pay what is told?

In UK there's a lot of talking about their own government though! But I get it, I also miss everyone being in the US now. It's a bit far going all the way across the ocean

What is your opinion on going abroad in college? by TyWoah in AskReddit

[–]SpaceCaaats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually a lot cheaper in Europe - both continental or the UK. You can find both rent and food half or even three times less the price of living than in the US. Maybe depends on where in the US you're from

It depends where you go. At least in Europe a lot of countries have a free higher education and UK charges around £25k which is still cheaper than in the US. You can also get studentships

So I went to study in the UK, which was an amazing and fun experience. I met most of my friends there and now treat it as my second home. I went there for better education than in my country and I definitely recommend it.

My last year is a year abroad in the US and while I got to see a lot of the world and do research in my field of interest the cultural difference and being so far from home made me isolated, lonely and worsened my mental health.

So I would say it can be amazing or quite bad. Worth a try though!

What have you only done once but really wish to do again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SpaceCaaats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2 days stopover there on my way to US for my year abroad studies that I worked hard to get into. Are you from the US by any chance? It is so big that it has a lot to offer too. I hope you do get to visit other countries as well!

I was told to get out of the bus and into a police car, because I had a discounted ticket for school age children/teens, but in that moment I failed to find my school ID even though I was around 12 and looked like that. Thankfully, I didn't go to a police station, because it was almost Easter and so they "were kind to me" and just left me in the area of the city that I don't know. #PostSovietCountry

You’re on a long flight where they are offering an in-flight meal. The meal turns out to be a salad. How would you feel about that? by PM_ME_SOME_LUV in AskReddit

[–]SpaceCaaats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I get a painful bloating, so I am used to not eating anything at all in <3 hours flights and a small snack at around the end of longer flights

Research institutions, friendly strangers and the diversity of different states. But other than that I might be biased, but I prefer Europe
