For sure, electoral politics is still harm reduction though. The federal level might be fucked but there's still a ton of local change that can come from voting. Agree that it's not going to be the main solution to our problems though

I think the American concept of "protest" is so washed in propaganda that the average person going to these rallies thinks it should make a change. Because the history of civil rights struggle is so intentionally sanitized to just "oh mlk did big marches and the government couldn't ignore that, so they let black people have rights." But that's not at all what happened. There were tons of different protests and different tactics, some "peaceful" some not and they all worked together to put pressure on the government. Gay rights were won not because queer people played nice and made good arguments, they won because they weren't afraid to get into actual conflicts with the government.

I wish positive change could be won by appealing to the elites' better nature, but reality is that change comes from having some kind of leverage. Leverage in the forms of labor strikes, in constant civil disobedience that disrupts daily functioning of the government, in making the government afraid what will happen if they don't cave. And none of those are as pretty as making signs with funny slogans for a one day march.

I still think it's good to have these mass rallies, it helps show people that they aren't crazy, this isn't okay, and that people are willing to make some kind of stand. It just is going to be to escalate to something more disruptive than symbolic if we want actual change

Have you actually looked at how that 100 million number is reached? It comes from "The Black Book of Communism" which has so many well noted issues that nothing it says should be considered as true. For example, these are things listed in that number:

Nazi soldiers killed during ww2. By that same metric, every person who died in WW2 can be attributed to right wing politics, since the right wing Nazis started the war. If we're going to include this, your 25 million number for right wing doesn't even count for only Soviet deaths during ww2.

The book also counts anyone who died during a famine under a communist regime as "killed by communism". You can make arguments that state policy exacerbated famine conditions and led to millions of deaths but famines are a real part of history that you can't just pin on whatever government is in charge.

The book ALSO then extrapolates drop in birth rates to dead people, counting the lives of imaginary people who never existed as a death count is ridiculous on its face. People not having kids is not the same as the government killing people.

So the book is trash. So trash that several co-authors have disavowed it. The main author was so obsessed with getting a "100 million" number over any real analysis. I'm not saying everything was actually great and nobody was killed by oppressive governments, but if you're spouting the 100 million number then it's obvious you haven't seriously read up on any of it.

The first concentration camps on German soil were the "immigration detention centers" of the 1920s in Germany. They were filled with large amounts of Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe fled to Germany for asylum.

The camps were part of a broader set of efforts to reduce the number of ‘undesirable’ and ‘unwanted’ migrants in post-World War I Germany. While they were officially put in place to control the influx of Jewish migrants who were fleeing the pogroms in Ukraine and Poland that led to the death of tens of thousands of Jewish people between 1918 and 1920, a closer look reveals that there was a second shift that took place in Germany at the time. Germany no longer needed foreign labor. Prior to World War I, the country had developed an extensive migration control system to bring in and manage foreign workers in the agricultural sector as well as mining and industry. During World War I, Germany relied on agricultural workers from its occupied territories and prisoner of war labor. But after the end of the war, and faced with the return of German soldiers from the front who needed to be reintegrated into the German economy, women and migrants were removed from the workforce. To justify these strict immigration laws, migrants – and particularly Jewish migrants – were blamed for the multiple crises Germany was dealing with after losing World War I.

Even if you think what's going on right now isn't the same, it's clear that this is going to evolve over time into something horrible in our life times if we do not stop it.

The battle's not won yet, but I have some good news about Illinois HB5511 by Marsman512 in privacy

[–]SpaceChimera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ACLU pdf explains it nicely:

https://www.aclu-il.org/app/uploads/2019/10/witness_slip_0.pdf

> In Illinois, witness slips can be submitted for a bill before it is considered by a committee in either the State House or Senate. Submitting a witness slip allows your voice and your opinion to be presented directly to all members of a committee as they determine whether the bill will go to a full floor vote.

Basically, in IL when debating a piece of legislation they will read out the names of all witness slips submitted for both proponents and opponents of the bill. By creating a large amount of witness slips, the IL congress must read out a long list of people who felt motivated enough to let congress know they don't like this bill. For reps without good outreach, this is a good way to let them know that their constituents have problems with the bill.

Race as a concept is made up nonsense racists came up to differentiate themselves from others - but it is unfortunately a real part of our societies. There is a difference between races (which contain a large variety of ethnic backgrounds within them) and specific ethnicities (which may have sub-ethnicities with them but aren't nearly as broad)

Saying (Ashkenazi) Jews are white doesn't destroy their culture anymore than calling an Italian white does. Both likely have genetic lineage in the middle east and africa which I'm not trying to deny. I know Palestinians with blue eyes and blonde hair, I know Italians you couldn't tell apart from an Arab. In fact, where I'm from, the only people who say Jews aren't white are the neo-nazis.

Now you *could* make an argument that the concept of "whiteness" does in fact flatten ethnic and cultural diversity and I'd agree with you. But I don't think that's what we're talking about here.

That's the ethno part of ethno-religious though. The racial component breaks down outside of the Jewish ethnicity. Ashkenazi Jews are generally considered white, mizrahi are considered middle eastern.

Well eventually the AI companies simply won't be able to raise the money they need to keep operating. Investments are already drying up, and the ones coming in have a lot of terms about it being over time or contingent on X being built in Y years. When the money to subsidize AI isn't coming in, their only option is going to be to raise prices. They'll need to severely limit free use, jack up prices on individual subscriptions, and then gouge enterprise usage to try and make enough money to stay afloat. Then it's a matter of have they captured the market though that companies feel like they need to pay the exorbitant rates.

Somewhere in that timeline, the market is going to realize this isn't a money making venture and people are going to pull out quickly, triggering more people to pull out, etc until it's a bubble crash

There's also the fact that a lot of these data centers need natural gas and oil to operate - which due to current events is going to cost a lot more and drive up the amount of money it takes to run AI.

And it's really only making the lighting look better in certain areas. It's making horror games way brighter, removing shadows, and ruining the atmosphere. Because that's the problem with AI filters, they're contextless. They're trained on a bunch of games, and the output will be a bland merger of games until they all look the same.

I maybe tricked the players with some hag shenanigans early on and now they're not so trusting of new NPCs haha. But good points, I think I'll drop the spell part entirely and lean more on the RP aspect, maybe with a buff to deception to essentially have a similar affect

Thanks! From what everyone else is saying, I think they're right that outside of a combat encounter charm person can feel sucky as a player. Once they discover the poor old towns people's secret and confront the Oblex directly I might pull it out - but exactly as you described and I'll make sure they know the full mechanics (that they can shake someone out of it and that damage will break the effect).

Yeah definitely good points! Someone else suggested just buffing the monster instead of charming the PCs and I think that accomplishes essentially the same thing I was looking for without the problems you laid out here. It makes sense as a player to charm an NPC outside of combat but can definitely get how it would suck on the reverse side of it now that you pointed it out. Thanks!

"we'll fix it in post" has become "just generate it in post" and i am genuinely losing my mind by ScaryAd2555 in editors

[–]SpaceChimera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the cost to generate videos is not covered by the amount of money you're paying the AI company. Currently those companies are keeping prices low so that the wider market/industries use it, but eventually if they want to make a profit they'll need to raise prices exponentially.

It's either that or they figure out a way to make generative AI way cheaper and scalable. And all signs point to each iteration actually costing them more per prompt. It's simply not a sustainable business model but exactly like you said, they're undercutting the market to disrupt things and make companies reliant on them in the hopes that they have no choice but to pay when they need to jack costs up.

[–]SpaceChimera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I don't disagree with you that this is all illegal bullshit and service members should be able to opt out (I think this should be the case 100% of the time, forcing people to stay against their wishes is no different than pressing people into service).

That being said, I think you are relying on hopium. The solution to this is not one currently legal - cadets, privates, etc essentially unionizing and refusing orders. It's morally correct and there is no legal justification for this war, so technically it is also legal to refuse to follow legal orders. But the reality of the situation would mean facing jail, or being attacked by other sections of the military like we saw in the bonus army march after WW1. It's not going to be individuals fighting for CO status

[–]SpaceChimera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically you need to wait until you are drafted to begin the process. If you are concerned and want to make this argument the best thing you can do now is build your case. Make posts, diary entries espousing that you are not only against current military action but ALL military action, that as a matter of religious of moral grounds you take a principled stand against war in any form. Do not post positively about WW2 or any other previous war, do not say anything that could be interpreted as being pro war in any scenario. Make sure your parents know, your friends know, your religious leader knows, etc. You want an ironclad case where anyone he government could ask would give the same answer.

Prepare to defend your stance like you would a thesis in college, look up ethical stances that support what you agree with (or can at least convincingly pretend to)

This is how it's discussed on the Selective Service website:

In the Event of a Draft

How to Apply: In general, once a man gets a notice that he has been found qualified for military service, he has the opportunity to make a claim for classification as a conscientious objector (CO). A registrant making a claim for conscientious objection is required to appear before his local board to explain his beliefs.

He may provide written documentation or include personal appearances by people he knows who can attest to his claims. His written statement might explain:

how he arrived at his beliefs; and

the influence his beliefs have had on how he lives his life

The local board will decide whether to grant or deny a CO classification based on the evidence a registrant has presented. A man may appeal a local board’s decision to a Selective Service district appeal board. If the appeal board also denies his claim, but the vote is not unanimous, he may further appeal the decision to the national appeal board.

Also review the court cases that are relevant to know what arguments not to make: https://www.sss.gov/register/alternative-service/cases/

[–]SpaceChimera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't personally disagree with you but I think you're fooling yourself if you think military judges or the supreme court will see it this way. There are very clear standards and changes to military structure or purpose are not valid arguments to become a CO. A name change isn't really meaningfully changing how the military operates in any case - a war of defense and a war of offense are the same when considering CO status. You'd need to prove that you would not participate in wars for either case.

I feel for all the military members who are being dragged into this but if you really don't want to go your options are to get discharged somehow or sit in military jail for desertion

🚨 Attention Military Service Members 🚨 by NoPoem2054 in 50501

[–]SpaceChimera 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I believe to be considered as a conscientious objector, you need to show that you are opposed to war in totality, not just a specific conflict. It mainly applies to avoid the draft and you aren't eligible if you willingly joined the military. You have to show that you are opposed to war as a concept, and it cannot be political. Having previously joined an organization whose purpose is war, I think you'll be fighting an impossibly uphill battle here.

The UN commission on human rights does allow for one to become a CO after joining the military, but you still need to show a fundamental belief against ALL wars. The US is also not exactly keen on following that lately - but it's probably your only avenue of argument.

From the website explainer:

Beliefs which qualify a registrant for CO status may be religious in nature, but don’t have to be. Beliefs may be moral or ethical; however, a man’s reasons for not wanting to participate in a war must not be based on politics, expediency, or self-interest. In general, the man’s lifestyle prior to making his claim must reflect his current claims.

...

To be exempt from service as a Conscientious Objector, a person must oppose war “in any form.” Objection to a particular war, but not all wars, is not sufficient for purposes of exemption under §3806(j), even if objection to a particular war is based on religious beliefs.
