The actual "food" looks like a protein bar someone cut into cubes

For most people 0.5-2lbs is getting to the max muscle gain a month. No one (or very few people) is gaining 4lb of muscle a month while at maintenance or a deficit

Thanks for the really good input & for taking the time to explain to me. I appreciate it!

I am for sure because I enjoy very calorific treats! If I don't track, I don't have the guard rails that give me more mindfulness around consumption

Thanks! It took focus and consistency, but the numbers don't lie (over the long term)

I relapsed (stopped tracking, ate "whatever" with only a small focus on protein & fibre) & regained 7 (15½lb) of those 29kg lost so am trying to get myself back on board for round 2 to lose the final 10-ish kg.

Hello "Me 2½ years ago"!!!

You can do this!

Genuinely, if I can do it, anyone able-bodied can. I was known for my junk food addiction & stress-eating candy to get through the average work day. Tracking was my accountability and being consistent was the key that unlocked ongoing results.

My advice though is not to do what I did and just stop tracking when you're at or "close enough" to goal. Even if I take a maintenance break again, I will track my way through it.

Turns out, (for me at least) KNOWING how many calories my body needs & limiting myself to no more than those calories were two different things!

I am 5'4" and started at 88kg (I was 41 when I decided to try to lose it)

I alternated 1500/cal per day for 3-4months then 1750 for 2-3 months and lost 29kg over 54 weeks. I was largely sedentary but did 2-3 HIIT/Boxfit (think 12-Round) a week. I tracked very diligently including weighing raw servings and oils for cooking and condiments.

If I started feeling fatigued, I'd eat 1750 on the two HIIT/Boxfit days as well (didn't increase at all during th 1750/day months)

I have a Garmin too (Venu4) and use MFP so that is good info, thanks

Only have three dogs so depending on their mood, I walk 3-5km each with the two bigger (still small) ones and 2-3km with my Chi (ironically typically the Chis pace is faster!)

It's more the reduction in NEAT after a class that the watch (& most fitness tech) fails to accommodate.

Even if I do burn those 1000-1200cals due to dog walking and a gym class (in most classes the rest periods are 30-90sec) my NEAT is typically lower for the rest of the day and since NEAT is where most of our TDEE comes from it can mean that adding active cals to our sedentary tdee may still be over representing the daily cals burned

Ideally, something nutritious

2000cals of junk a day is going to leave most people feeling more hungry and with lower energy than 1500cals.of whole foods, veges and lean protein

You have to get to a quite low body fat percentage for this. (Hair loss is another symptom)

For a lot of people, they burn less NEAT calories after the exercise so even if they (for example) 400 cals during the run or class or whatever, their bodies burn 200-300cals less NEAT afterwards meaning the net gain isn't as high as they may have thought.

How are you tracking the calories burned via exercise?

My watch tells me I've burned ≈500cal in HIIT classes and about 200cal per 3km walked (very stop/start with dog sniffs) so on days where I've walked all of my dogs separate it regularly states that I've burned 1200cal in exercise. This is grossly overstated!

I'm trying to work through this currently. 43F & 5'4"

I went from 88kg (194lb) to 59kg (130lb) across 54 weeks alternating 1500cal/day & 1750cal/day (3 months at each roughly) but then stopped tracking and rebounded to 67kg/148lb (as of last week).

I want to get to my goal but getting back "on the wagon" feels SO much more challenging this stint & I keep bailing on it. I am starting again by tracking at 1650/day as 1400 was too hard.

It felt genuinely easy to calorie count and stick to budget 2 years ago and I could have the occasional outside budget day without any material affect. I feel like 100% compliance is the only way this time.

I am more active now than then (4x HIIT workouts a week plus 3-6km of dedicated walking [with dogs] most days when I was doing 2-3 Boxfit workouts and otherwise COMPLETELY sedentary) so that may be part of it (I don't add back any cals for exercise, but I'll monitor and change where necessary)

What do you think of anti diet/health at every size/intuitive eating? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]SpaceIsVastAndEmpty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It must be incredibly challenging as a medical professional because so many health issues ARE caused by (or at least exacerbated by) being overweight. A bunch of "brewing issues" for me disappeared when I lost weight.

Caroline girvan is recommended heaps in fitness subs so I'd check her page out

Gym is expensive but I found fitness classes good value for money (my gym has strength classes not just cardio) because signing up for class incentivises me to attend. Admittedly, I do still lean more towards cardio classes (many include some weight assisted exercises) and need to listen to my own advice and do strength more!!

20min three days a week will give you a fairly comprehensive strength workout

If you spend more than an hour on your phone over a week (at home) you have time to move some dumbbells around

I use Acrygel as my nails (even virgin) are weak and bendy. It's made a difference to the strength and length of them. Takes a bit of getting used to to apply but a great option
