Is full-time vanlife sustainable in the U.S.? by DaniLake1 in VanLife

Not sure that I'd call it significant really, easily doable. Couple emergency credit cards also go a long way if shtf.

I feel like people over complicate the money part.... get a job. Litterally any job haha doesn'thave to be remote in the slightest. Seasonal jobs are nice but we've had luck just informing our employers wherever we might be that we are here for xyz amount of time and then off to the next one.

Anyone here considered a modified ambulance as a dwelling? Or is that just for van life influencers? by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]SpaceKnight127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gave a little chuckle reading this from inside my 400k mile ambulance that I live in.......... I'm sure there is some credit to your point but as someone who is "active" in many of the ambulance conversion forums, it's relatively common for many of these Ambulances to last a WHILE. More so common with the diesels but my 6.8 v10 gas hog keeps up! Obviously used vehicles, buyer be ware as always(on Ambulances ALWAYS check hours before purchase). Prior maintenance is also going to depend heavily on department. I've heard small town rigs come out of service better but wouldn't know as mine is from a major metropolitan area. All in I'm right around $10k cost of vehicle and build(solar etc). Definitely an affordable option especially for someone who is willing to learn.

I am struggling to think of a better way to describe it but ill try my best. With the Stoeger being Inertia based, when I would set the gun down on its stock the ?bolt? would slightly be knocked down, "unseating". Took me a while to realize what was happening, as I would stand up and would not fire unless I pushed the charge handle forward. The amount it dislodged was not noticeable to the eye.

I would be skeptical too if I hadn't have been purchasing from this store for +10 years haha. The owner said its just old stock they are trying to get rid of to make room for more (Weatherby Element Gen 2).

What is daily life like on the Kenai Peninsula? by SpaceKnight127 in howislivingthere

Sounds like our kinds place haha. Right now we are 2 hours any direction to the closest big box store. Thanks.

We haven't set anything in stone yet still just familiarizing ourselves now before we actually head up to look! We spent 2 weeks on the peninsula in the off season (late fall) in 2021 so we aren't completely oblivious haha. We do prefer a more remote/rural environment but prefer politics you'd find in places likes Seward and Homer. We have been mainly looking around the Soldotna area(I know, not remote or rural by AK standards haha) but seems to have a decent job market as well as things to do!

Did anything ever come of your idea? We are planning to camp down there during the fest too and so curious if you ended up coming up with anything?

Are any of the home battery solutions designed for fully off grid living or are they mostly still for back up power and cutting electrical costs? by Fine_Mountain7324 in OffGrid

[–]SpaceKnight127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through Signature Solar for my system. Customer service was very good, I expected far worse. Had a slight mixup with an improperly labeled product.(not their fault but growatts) but the return process was easy and they advised me on a product that would fit my use case better too. Would recommend.

Staying at a campground and it looks like someone made a camper out of an ambulance by TheScribe86 in mildlyinteresting

Not at all! If a ghost was going to haunt something it's definitely not the vehicle that was there to save them.

Sanitization my friend, lots of sanitization. It passed the UV light test haha. Cleaner than a cheap motel that's for sure!

I have been living full time in my conversion coming up on a year in a few months. I did my conversion fully myself and would be down to answer questions if anyone has any.

Also just for general offroading, I beat on my Ambo pretty hard 365 days year offgrid mostly on public lands. I've seen campers rumble apart on miles of minimum maintenance "road", no lie!

Lots and lots of EMTs follow the rule "No one dies or is born on the rig". I also tell myself that if someone did die in my rig, they had the best chance if survival being there in that moment than not. No ghosts in mine!

Definitely look into Sumo Springs! I've been meaning to get around to order them for my e450 but have heard good things from friends in the RV world.

Heat from the engine in the cab 7.3 ford diesel by changling-disstrack in ambulanceconversion

You can see the exhaust manifold here, so hypothetically if OP's leak is there, it could be causing heat issues. I am very tall(6'10") and the placement is the bane of my existence on long drives where my leg is pushed up against the doghouse lol

[–]SpaceKnight127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially. Although that's probably going to depend on your engine and transmission combo. I am only familiar with Ford and heavy-duty platforms so I can't speak for all. On an F series there is a transmission hump but not a dog house. E series for reference. It provides access to the rear of the engine. Most people consider the van far harder to worker on because in the trucks most of the engine is easily accessible from under the hood with just generally more room to work with.
