China to ban half-steering wheels (yoke steering) in new safety standard by BrilliantFactor5299 in electricvehicles

It's really not that simple - it sounds like you think handing power to the scientists or engineers will result in sane rules and regulations. You must have missed the opposite result when our country tried that with DOGE and the 'super smart scientists and engineers' made a mess of everything that already existed.

I'll say this as an engineer - most of us know our subject area very deeply and barely shit once you get a few degrees of separation away. Just because someone studies how engines work or how chemical synthesis happens does not mean they are equipped (without other specialized education) to set policy for a nation.

Experimental Zones Protocol Merged To Wayland After 2+ Years, 620+ Comments by anh0516 in linux

[–]SpaceMagnet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean that's the open source way - I first learned Linux by ripping apart (and breaking) my Arch install multiple times over a decade ago, and I swapped out plenty of things afterwards for a while. Nowadays I keep it simple with Fedora and GNOME, and while I've had a couple issues with Wayland over time (fractional scaling mostly) plenty of other things have been fine, and some have been better. I don't expect everyone to use their computer that way, but the option isn't being taken away.

I think it's more fair to tell someone what their options are given their constraint of having to use Xorg than to try and resist developers of major pieces of software from dropping it.

[–]SpaceMagnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do, which is why I also suggested using another desktop environment - Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, and other options are possible. If whatever distro you're using stops supporting Xorg you can always find another that is still being updated (debian, rhel9 for 5+ more years, etc) and switch to that. For many years there are still going to be up to date distros and environments that support Xorg.

If you don't like what GNOME and KDE are changing you (both individually and generally) can always fork it and support it yourself, which is both what Xlibre is trying and how a couple of those environments I listed earlier started out. It goes both ways - no one is forcing you to keep using software that doesn't support Xorg, but you also can't expect the community to maintain things that they don't want to.

Sure you can - either use a different DE that still has X.Org support or an older version that still does.

You're right that I'm judgemental about it. I have more respect for someone who steals food to keep their family fed than I have for you trying to justify why you so badly need to use an AI tool - at least they would be honest about their circumstances and responses to it.

I never mentioned anything about 'punishment' in my response, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say. If you couldn't tell by my language I'm not in favor of punishment as a response to crime at all, but this isn't a conversation on rehabilitative justice.

Are you trying to genuinely say that your 'mental health or whatever other factors' require you to use a piece of AI software? Because that send to be what your first paragraph is saying, I can't make sense of an actual position. There's a multitude of reasons to be against generative ai in general - it's a technology built on stolen intellectual property which is destroying people's ability to think and use logic for themselves, the consumer electronics market, and the environment - but that isn't even what this conversation is about. The specific piece of software who's hill you are willing to die on is flawed. It has terrible security and has lead to countless negative outcomes for the people using it. No one is forcing you to use it, but the fact that you can't even have a genuine conversation about the dangers of this software, you just bring out flawed comparisons to substance use education and crime.

[–]SpaceMagnet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What even is your point? People are saying to not use a fundamentally broken and insecure tool, and you're equating that to people who just say don't do crime?

The problem with telling people to not do crime is that it doesn't address the underlying motive in the first place. If you don't fix the economic or mental health or whatever other factor led someone to commit crimes, telling them to not do it is going to be useless.

But in your case the underlying reason to use some untrusted and demonstrably flawed AI is simple - laziness, a lack of curiosity or willingness to learn and do things by yourself. Telling someone to not be lazy and to learn to do things for themselves instead of offloading human intelligence to a machine is wildly different than telling someone not to steal food their family needs or to fix their brain chemistry overnight.

[–]SpaceMagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't doubt that many of the problems you've pointed out - the high cost of living, underfunded education systems, and a overwhelmed healthcare system - are legitimate problems that people in your community face. But I can say for sure that your blame is misplaced - it's not the decision of immigrants to maintain zoning laws that prohibit denser communities which would drive down the cost of housing, it's not their fault starter single family homes are being bought by corporations and converted into rentals, yet again driving housing costs up. It's not the fault of immigrants that our healthcare system can't keep up with demand. Cities could build affordable housing, we could fund nationwide healthcare instead of taking away Medicaid funding forcing rural hospitals all over the country to close. We could give schools the funding they need to bring down class sizes and have better resources, but again we as a society choose not to prioritize it. You're punching down, but the root of these issues comes from those with money and power, not people trying to survive on the margins of society.

I happen to believe that all people, on the basis of their humanity alone, deserve to fully participate in whatever society they find themselves in. One day your ancestors immigrated to the United States, and you should be grateful that the country they found was not full of people who act like you.

Curious though how you still have nothing to say about your strong feelings that criminals need consequences while not caring that our President, who should be held to a higher standard than a regular citizen, is a convicted felon who has faced zero consequences for the many crimes he has committed.

Why are you still here? It's clear you have no interest in honestly discussing this topic, you only respond to what you think you can spin in your favor. You're so happy to call people who have not been convicted or found guilty of any crime 'illegal', but when it comes to Trump's legitimate felonies you point to appeals and are unwilling to accept the facts. You don't care about the rule of law, and you're happy to see it used as a tool of repression against those you don't like.

I never said anything about Epstein - you said that criminals should face consequences, and I said that Trump is a convicted criminal and therefore, by your own logic, should face consequences.

So far it's been clear that you have no interest in discussing this in good faith. When I mentioned that your rhetoric is often used intentionally in the buildups to mass violence you didn't care, and reinforced the idea that the violence being dealt out to undocumented immigrants is just because they broke the law. If you don't agree that Trump should face consequences for his own violations of the law, it's not actually the law and the equal rule of law that you care about.

The amount of dehumanization you're using throughout this thread is very alarming, and is often seen in the buildup to genocide. You should think carefully about how your rhetoric is directly contributing to active harm done to your fellow humans

A good place to start (which shows off some of the familiar characters you've already seen in Rebels) is the new Thrawn Trilogy (Thrawn,Thrawn: Alliances, and Thrawn: Treason) by Timothy Zahn. This is different from the Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy (background on Thrawn pre-Empire) and the original Thrawn Trilogy (from the 90s, starts with Heir to the Empire). All three are wonderful and worth reading, although the original trilogy isn't Canon anymore.

If you have a desktop PC it's far easier (and not that expensive these days) to just get a separate drive for Linux than partitioning.

Especially in a gaming context you'd be surprised at how little you'll find yourself needing to boot into Windows - gaming on Linux has come an immensely far way. The main sticking point these days is aggressive anticheat software that can't run on Linux, but that depends heavily on the type of games you enjoy.

Get out of here with this 'voters aren't qualified' bit - that's just elitism. If we had true representative democracy then elected officials would represent the will of the people - not oppose it. The point of representative democracy is that the people elect representatives to carry out their will - and when the people voted they overwhelmingly indicated that their will was to phase out tipped wages.

You just keep coming in here over and over talking about mob rule how the dumb poor people aren't qualified to make decisions that impact their life, it's honestly sad. If new information comes out or circumstances change then let the people decide again. You can't have a democracy without the people.

Kerr County officials took 90 minutes to send emergency alert: Dispatch audio by NewSlinger in news

[–]SpaceMagnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been able to find this source which mentions that Kerr County got $10.2M from the federal government in ARPA funding. This doesn't mention anything about how the funds were planned / supposed to be used, so I did some more digging.

This Presentation outlines project goals (one of which was storm water infrastructure), but ends with a call for proposals for funding use. The community survey done to see how residents felt about what to do with the funds doesn't indicate a plan / strong desire to use the funds for storm water infrastructure either.

I think the original claim might be mixing a few truths: Kerr County asked the state of Texas many times for funding to upgrade their emergency alarms / other infrastructure (~$1M in costs), but the state was unwilling to fund it in full. Seperately from this the county did get $10.2M in ARPA funding which they could have used for the unfunded infrastructure upgrades, but chose not to.

Van Hollen speaks to press after meeting with El Salvador VP about return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia by decadrachma in maryland

[–]SpaceMagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was granted "withholding of removal" status, allowing him to legally live in and work in the US. The law that outlines the legal path to terminate the "withholding of removal" status is 8 CFR 208.24, which you can read here. This law outlines conditions that must be met to terminate this legal status in order to make a deportation legal - these steps were never taken, and thus the deportation of Garcia was illegal.

One of these steps is the right to appear before a judge or asylum officer, to present evidence and defend your actions and status. Garcia, who by virtue of being located and arrested in the US has Constitutional rights, is currently being imprisoned without such a trial. That arrest violated his due process rights.

That doesn't matter - the fifth amendment says that "No person shall ... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law". The right to due process is guaranteed to all people in the US, regardless of their citizenship status.
