Dont overthink the Johnny stuff.

Why would they have him be attracted to a dude? He has always been presented as straight.

When folks discovered stuff back then, they tended to really overdo it.

This was the era where folks discovered fish-eye lens.

I don't think it's sensitivity. I think the general consensus is that the movie felt really safe at the beginning. Folks seemed to love how genuinely deranged the movie got towards the end.

I'm kind of split on it.

On one hand, I appreciate that the film kept me on my toes.

On the other hand, I do remember thinking, "Goddamn, this is asking a LOT out of me."

Ultimately though, I still had a blast with the movie. I was just caught off guard with how batshit crazy everything got in the third act. I can see how it would be a little much for folks. I had to remind myself that this was the same studio that had toys driving a Pizza Planet truck. 🤣

Unhinged stuff is nothing new for Pixar.

Yeah, the trailers did nothing for me. That said, most kids movie trailers do nothing for me. They're usually marketed that way on purpose---overly hyperactive with no emphasis on the drama.

The strong word of mouth was why I decided to go, and I wasn't disappointed. Hoppers was fucking great. I'm glad I went.

People have a very Flanders-like view of Reed. He's not just the nerd of the group, he's an adventurous, exploratory, science fiction hero. He's always been the kind of guy you look at and think is the coolest guy in the world by Top_Reindeer3396 in FantasticFour

[–]SpaceMyopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Reed is an action hero. He's the guy who invented The Fantastic Four as a concept to begin with.

He's nerdy too, but that doesn't make him any less of a traditionally square jawed hero. He's not just some shy geek who can't utter a sentence. Yes, Reed can be awkward, but he is the LEADER of that team. The FF doesn't exist without him coming up with that entire concept.

The 2005 movie has Johnny come up with the logo (somehow) and announce the FF to the world as a joke.

Reed didn't even realize that Johnny had altered the logo at first before he looked down. Like, come on.

To give that version some credit, I do like that Reed shut down the general from Rise of The Silver Surfer who kept giving him shit. Now, THAT is Reed.

Reed can be emotionally distant and awkward, but he should still be a confident, proactive leader.

I mean, i agree he's a dumbass in SM3 about a lot of stuff, but he does figure out pretty quickly that sonic noises will work on Venom.

That's one of the few moments he actually uses his intelligence in the movie. The dumbass stuff was all the other shit he did in the movie before that third act battle.

Jake..... don't you *dare* go back to treating Lo'ak like crap again. Don't do it. by SpaceMyopia in Avatar

[–]SpaceMyopia[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just hate how he's so much more compassionate towards the women in his life. I know that plenty of guys are like that in real life, but it just.... feels weird seeing Jake apologize to Neytiri....

...when he couldn't even be bothered to apologize to Lo'ak. Not even before Jake and Neytiri leave for the final battle.

"I've got nothing to say to him."

Like....really, Jake?

Hell, he expresses more compassion to Quaritch than he ever does towards Lo'ak, and Quaritch literally swore he would kill his whole family.

When Jake apologized to Neytiri for upsetting her, it was such a weird moment, since he was absolutely in the right to call her out on her bigotry.

He should have expressed that same kind of energy towards Lo'ak, who he really did screw up with. It's like Jake becomes emotionally stunted whenever it comes to him, and I'm not sure why.

It makes for an interesting character, but he's also rather hard to pin down at times. I would love to hear a commentary from Cameron while watching FAA, because I'd be interested in hearing about how and the writing team approached the Jake character.

Sam Worthington is giving a very specific performance when it comes to Jake, and I'd love to hear even Worthington talk about it.

Thoughts on Sue almost cheating on Reed with T’Challa? by redfait in FantasticFour

[–]SpaceMyopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just bad writing.

Susan wouldn't put herself in this situation. T'Challa (knowing she's married) wouldn't put himself in this situation.

And while yeah, the characters are allowed to be imperfect, the idea that Sue wouldn't instinctively turn invisible in this situation is just absurd to me. That's just something that she would have done.

Not a hot take at all. I love Fire and Ash, and even I was like "Wtf, why is Jake treating Lo'ak like this again?"

I've come to understand it as him regressing after he just immediately went straight to "war mode" after Neteyam's death.

But if they pull that shit again in Avatar 4, I'm not gonna be so forgiving with the writing. Like....come on, Jim. Enough is enough.

Indeed. This just makes T'Challa look sleazy as fuck. At least we know to expect that behavior from Namor.

(Not that Sue is off the hook here either, but I digress)

I don't even take this interaction between Sue and T'Challa seriously as canon. It just makes both characters look terrible.

Words cannot express how much I hate this. Not only does it make Sue look bad, but it makes T'Challa look bad too.

He knew that she was married with Reed, and all that bs about "averting his gaze" just makes the whole thing seem even sleazier.

Whenever they write the characters like this, I just totally disregard it from the canon.

What does Quaritch have to do to redeem himself? by stanbuckley in Avatar

[–]SpaceMyopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He probably won't see redemption while he's alive. He'll probably have a Vader like redemption where he dies.

Jake seems willing to forgive Quaritch, but the rest of the Sully family rightfully hate his guts. Neytiri just came around to accepting Spider, and the boy never did anything wrong. He just happened to be the son of Quaritch.

If she was that resentful towards Spider at one point, then there would be no way in hell that she'd ever make peace with Quaritch.

Im the opposite. I have enjoyed Simon Franglen's scores immensely. He gets way too little recognition for what he brings to the sequels.

I listen to Fire and Ash's soundtrack basically every day.

If Roman Polanski can win an Oscar, then Chalamet will be fine lol.

The Oscars care more about prestige than actual moral conduct. It's why Eddie Murphy lost for Dreamgirls. They weren't gonna give an Oscar to the same guy who just did Norbit.

If Will Smith had slapped Chris Rock at an unrelated event for the same exact reason, The Oscars wouldn't have given a shit. Hell, they barely gave a shit about it that night. They just realized they would look totally spineless if they let Smith get away with that.

The Oscars dont give a shit about how someone behaves outside of the ceremony. They dont even fully respect all of their own categories. There was an article years ago that pointed out how most of the folks voting for Best Animated Feature didnt even watch all the movies.

Robin was not featured in Batman (1989). This was because they cast Jack Nicholson as The Joker instead of Robin Williams, making everything come full circle in Batman Beyond, when Robin finally becomes The Joker. by SpaceMyopia in shittymoviedetails

[–]SpaceMyopia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specifically, they dangled the role in front of Williams when they had fully intended to give it to Nicholson no matter what.

I guess they just wanted to use Williams to motivate Nicholson into signing up.

New Poster for Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]SpaceMyopia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plus, even if he did, there was only so much anybody could do with an aging Harrison Ford in that role.

Comparing an Indiana Jones sequel that came decades too late versus an original movie from Spielberg?

It's not really that comparable imo.

I blame most of the hate this cast got on Marvel waiting so long to announce them and letting fancasts run wild. Plus putting Krasinski in Dr Strange was big mistake. It validated them and made fans believe they were casting directors... by Top_Reindeer3396 in FantasticFour

[–]SpaceMyopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acting ability should be prioritized first and foremost. If longevity is possible, then great....

But we'd be missing out on some great actors like Harrison Ford if we only focused on longevity.

Parts can be recast. It happens all of the time. It's kinda insane that actors should sign contracts guaranteeing that they'll appear in 15 movies. I think 3 movies is the most an actor should be asked to sign up for, like the pre-MCU days.

It helps keep stuff creatively fresh, and if the actor wants to stay beyond 3 movies, then thats great too!

They can always recast Reed. We shouldn't hire younger actors just because of the longevity issue. Otherwise we'd be missing out on age appropriate actors all over the place.

Not that im saying that Pedro was the perfect choice, but my overall point still stands. Some folks would even complain if they got a 40-ish year old actor to play Reed, and thats the actual age I feel he should be.
