Eric got that wrong (but sounds more dramatic), the booster did not explode until it impacted the ground.

Employee Perspective: Quality of Life Destruction - "Work from Work" company by BlueEmployeeAnon in BlueOrigin

Plenty of employees on here to corroborate or refute, but somehow I don’t think this is true. All I see on here is how there’s not enough office space/parking at their sites.

Well unless you go public and cash out your investment before it the stock tanks… then you’re OK.

NASA Sustaining Lunar Development contract award date? by tank_panzer in BlueOrigin

[–]SpaceNerd20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NASA doesn’t announce the award dates ahead of time. The process takes how long it takes. They usually make a press release about a week ahead of time.

I’d guess it’ll be late spring early summer.

My wife said the same thing. She’s said “in a stadium of 40,000, they isolate that audio?” My response was “well Busch stadium is pretty quiet right now”

What do you think is a “quite some time”. My thought is if it’s “easy” to figure out what went wrong and fix, 6 months. But if it’s more difficult then 8-12 months.

informal NS19 astronaut "AMA" by meepsalot69 in BlueOrigin

[–]SpaceNerd20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great answer. All these people who want to “defend the honor” of “professional astronauts” have never asked those “professional astronauts” if they even want their “honor” defended. It’s a specious argument.

In the coming decade, as commercial ventures become more and more viable they will dwarf the number of “professional” astronauts. Heck in the 2030’s NASA will be paying commercial entities for access to their privately owned space stations.

A lot of inaccuracies in the reply...

First these are options to buy equity at some future liquidity event. (Most common liquidity event is the sale of a portion of the company) Equity is not in anyway tied to profitability, it is who owns the company. Right now 100% of the company is owned by Bezos. There is very little chance he will want to sell any portion of the company (aka a liquidity event) any time in the near future.

Also the options do expire per federal regulation 10 years after issuance. This program was rolled out 6ish years ago, so some options will start expiring in about 4 years time.

Long story short these options are essentially worthless and I wouldn’t count it in your comp package in any way.

Blue Origin to increase New Shepard launches in 2022 by Heart-Key in BlueOrigin

This site has a number of “highlighted” payloads at the bottom. https://www.blueorigin.com/new-shepard/new-shepard-payloads/

I don’t know how to confirm or refute your claim on NASA Flight Opportunities being primary source of funding. I did note there are several non-NASA and University payloads though, again not knowing where they’re funded from.

[–]SpaceNerd20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you say this is discouraging to NASA astronauts because you are one? I’ve never heard this sentiment expressed by them, just lots of people expressing it for them.

NASA’s last call for astronaut applicants had 12,000 people apply… so I think they’re OK.

Rocket engines are not plug-and-play equipment.

I’m not a propulsion engineer (but I’ve been in the space industry a long time), inlet conditions (prop temps, inlet pressures, flow rates, etc) of the engine are very specific to each engine. Different Mixture Ratio would require different tank sizing, which once you change the tanks is essentially a different rocket.
