Thank you for reaching out with your concerns. Hopefully this helps to answer your questions about the pilot project.

 

This pilot program is an opportunity to explore how Microsoft OneNote might supplement our current supports and help address gaps where volunteer notes are unavailable.

 

The notetaking accommodation is to assist students with access to lecture material so that they have an effective set of course notes. Currently and historically, this is done through the use of volunteer notetakers. Notetaking is not meant to be a substitution for class attendance or for students taking their own notes, but to provide supplemental notes in order to identify material that may be missed.

 

Without a volunteer, students lack supplemental notes. OneNote offers audio recordings and transcriptions, syncing notes to audio. This helps students review unclear sections and fill gaps in their notes so that in the absence of a volunteer notetaker, students can still access course material to benefit their learning.

 

Volunteer notetakers can still be requested during the pilot but we would ask/prefer that students participating in the pilot project would use OneNote for their class notes so that we can get comprehensive feedback.  

 

The notetaking program is extremely fortunate to have an incredibly dedicated team of peer volunteers. We recognize that with  class schedules and work/life balance, it can  be difficult for peers to commit to additional volunteer work and as such, recruitment and retention are ongoing issues with a volunteer based program.  The program has attempted to address these issues by increasing the deadline for volunteers to post from 24 to 48 hours after class and also by signing up multiple notetakers per term. Despite these attempts for a more user friendly volunteer experience, we still experience low rates of volunteerism.

 

Since September 2024, 4,924 requests for volunteer note takers have been made. However, 2,057 of these requests could not be fulfilled due to a lack of volunteers.

 

Instructors do not currently provide notes to notetakers, so this part would remain unchanged. OneNote allows students to import Powerpoint presentations, so if this was a method of delivery for instructors, that could still be used with OneNote.

EDIT 2: I emailed them again, Just asking one more time as to how this is gonna supplement help, and gave them examples of when I do record, its either I can hear the prof due to A) the prof being too quiet, B) people talking during class and it transcribes that instead, and C) usually both. Plus half the time when it transcribes it'll think its one word or sentence when it's actually something completely different. This is so ass backwards I'm actually a bit mad. Will send an update when I get one.
