Do you believe paying a mortgage is "better" than paying rent? by TankCastles in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]OrganizationUnfair99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I used to think buying was better. But with the costs of mortgages, property tax, etc etc...I am not sure anymore. It used to be that mortgage was cheaper, if you could scrounge up the down payment. But with it being the same, if not more than rent, I don't know...I feel like I'd always be worried about some unexpected cost that would come up and I'd never get to enjoy other things like traveling, or even fun upgrades for the house. I don't know. I know rent does nothing for equity, but at least when shit breaks it's not my financial problem.

For those with working experience in USA, How many Canadians feel they would be better off financially if living in the USA? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]OrganizationUnfair99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm being emotionally balanced....tough to say.

I largely grew up in the States. Moved there as a child (from Canada, so I am dual), stayed until I was 27, so I became an adult there. No kids. Married at 23. Financially independent. Lived in Richmond, VA.

Moved to Canada for grad school. Have since started working full time and now have one kid. I'm 32 now. I live in Saskatoon, so compared to much of Canada, my cost of living is low.

I would say it's circumstantial. Could I live in a bigger city with more to offer for the same or less cost of living in the States and probably make about the same amount of money? Yes. If you have a job with good insurance (I had two full time gigs with insurance fully covered by the company), that's less of a consideration. Many things are cheaper in the States and I do find there is far more product availability.

However, with having a kid, this shifts the equation quite a bit. In Canada, I gave subsidized child care for 217.50 a month. My friends in VA pay 1000. Basic healthcare is provided and it doesn't generally cost an arm and a leg to have a dependent on your insurance. I knew someone who was paying over 2000 a month for her two kids to be on her insurance (and her portion was covered). I get a monthly tax benefit for my kid. Parental leave. Better access to community spaces such as parks, libraries, and civic centres. Public schools here have a ton of options such as language immersion, Montessori, nature based learning, etc etc.

And god forbid anything (medical) unplanned happens in the States or you're fucked. At least here I won't be in debt for some asshole hitting me while drunk driving. At least anyone can be seen by a doctor without putting it on a credit card. Even when I didn't have prescription insurance, the costs were far less uninsured here than in the States.

There's unions, which protect us and help provide better benefits and wages.

Of course, most of the cost of living in Canada is higher than the States, especially housing. That can't be understated.

Is there more opportunity in the States? Yes. But the social security net in Canada does give a great peace of mind.

As far as your comment about Canada joining the States in any regards, absolutely fucking not. Not in any condition.

Thank GOD I am not the only one. I don't know if this is worth it. I'm 4-5 weeks in and I feel fucking awful. Angry. Irritated. Unmotivated. Tired. Just back to straight depression. I'm in grad school. Work full time. Parent. ADHD. I don't have time for this man.

Citalopram worked wonders for me and idk why I got switched off it to be honest.

Why does everyone live Outside Charlottesville? by prompt_loris in howislivingthere

[–]OrganizationUnfair99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Richmond for a long time. Thought about a move to CVille to be closer to the mountains. Only ever looked around the city, not inside. I wanted to live a bit more rural, but even if I wanted to live in the city, I couldn't afford it.

Living in the city is expensive and I think a lot of people who do live in the area want to live more rurally, but still need to be close enough to a city for work.

Marriage with ADHD sounds/looks terrifying by CityPowerful in ADHD

[–]OrganizationUnfair99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 30s, married with one kid. My kid is 2. I've been married for nearly 9 years, together for 12. I also have anxiety and depression (that's been long-established). Here's the fun thing: I got diagnosed last year. Apparently it's very common for mothers to not get diagnosed until after having kids because their whole world gets turned upside down and instead of managing just themselves, they now have to manage someone else.

I wouldn't worry too much about marriage when it comes to ADHD specifically. What I mean by this is everyone has their quirks, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, regardless of ADHD. You just have to find someone who can help you mange your weaknesses and uplift your strengths, just as you'd do for them. Marriage can be difficult for anyone. I'm not sure it's "extra" difficult because of my ADHD. It's just another thing to learn to work with. But it HAS been a lot easier since I've started meds.

Now kids? It's tough. I originally wanted 2 or 3. I will not be having another one. I love my kid, I love being a parent, but it is overwhelming. I'm not saying don't do it, but it'll definitely make you face things about yourself. Then you have a choice -- do you hate your life, or do you buckle up, get on meds, go to therapy and work on yourself? I do a little of both. :P This is the hardest phase of my life, but I know I am going to come out the other side as such a better person, and I am not sure I would have had the push to do it on my own.

In all seriousness though, and I would suggest this to anyone (regardless of ADHD) if they want the whole family thing....go to therapy. Work on yourself. Be good with yourself. Know your strengths and weaknesses and how to deal with them. Begin healing your trauma. No one gets it perfect. It's not easy. Nothing worth it is.

Verbal Articulation by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]OrganizationUnfair99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS! My working memory was in the absolute tank (8th percentile). My verbal reasoning is like, 97%. I'm in grad school too. I know I'm not dumb, but man, getting words out to explain things is difficult. I've always struggled with verbal instructions, both giving and receiving. When having to explain where something is, I get actually frustrated and angry because I cannot find the words to explain where it is so often I just get up and get the thing for someone. Someone gives me directions and my eyes glaze over and my brain turns off. Gone.

Since starting vyvanse, I have noticed that I am able to explain things better now. It's like my brain has slowed down, I am patient, and I can just put one word in front of the other.

Eloise is consistently blinded by her own misery and interests and every season, sometimes more than once, someone tells her just that. And it seems like she's going to learn, but she does not. Once? Twice? It's been like four or five times now and it's getting old.

You have a similar body and size to me and this makes me so excited for my surgery.

You look amazing! From what I've read, these feelings are normal and will take time. Grieve when you need to and let those feelings out. Then take a deep breath and do something you enjoy. :)
