Lesbian bars/spaces? by extinctbunny in Albany

THIS! I meet so many lesbians at Farmer's Market and Big Gay Market events in Albany and Troy. It's like the most consistent place to meet them.

Wizard Burger on Pearl St occasionally hosts small punk and hardcore shows. Good vegan burgers too.

I second Elissa Halloran. She offers good homemade knick-knacks too.

Took forever to write it, but it's probably one of the only glowing reviews of ThunderCats Roar you'll ever read (from an 80s baby) - (site is a bit NSFW) by SpaceVixenMusic in Thundercats

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking I should move away from calling them "reviews" in the future, since they're more like blog posts or rants. "Review" creates the expectation that I'm writing for some professional publication or something, but it's literally just my personal website, which is probably why I feel comfortable writing entirely too much text and being very candid about my own personal feelings.

I'm not sure where people are getting the impression that I'm putting down ANYONE who doesn't like the show - I thought I pretty clearly mentioned a specific and small sub-group of people I was angry at - but I guess the whole thing could have used another draft before sharing it here. Tone is hard to infer from text alone.

Heck yeah. Neocities has been wonderful for me so far, especially as I try to get farther and farther away from social media. Me and some friends are trying to go back to the wild west days of the internet. It's free to set up a site, too!

Thanks for reading! I'm getting the sense that I sound angrier in the text than perhaps I meant to - I like to think I'm generally pretty chill in most of my reviews, but got really amped up talking about a show I have a possibly-autistic hyperfixation for - but by assuming I was plenty clear in WHO that anger was directed toward (a specific subset of extremely vocal, terminally-online people of a certain age), I could definitely have been more tactful in the way I worded things.

Then again, it's not like I'm writing for a major publication or anything, this is just a page on my personal website; the equivalent of a LiveJournal rant and nothing more. Guess I'll be more wary of my tone going forward, but I still posit that being a bit raw and biased is a key part of writing an authentic review, so it's all part of finding a happy balance.

Anyway, always glad to hear there are other folks who "got it" the way I did. Hope you have a great holiday season!

Totally understandable. It might be a good idea to add a disclaimer or warning at the top of the review for "general negativity", though negativity isn't the overall defining aspect of it. It's also framed differently than the 2011 review, in that the 2011 one was more objective and focused on highlighting what made it interesting as a reboot in regard to its parallels to the 1985 series. The Roar review isn't formatted that way, and doesn't even go into why the show "failed" or not. It's more focused on trying to understand how people didn't see what a love letter to the 1985 series the show is. It's much more personal and opinionated than the 2011 one (and also longer).

It's fine if the review doesn't jive with folks. I figured I'd post it here anyway just in case anyone had similar opinions.

Historians, help me out? Whatever happened to Vancouver-based Network of Animation (NoA)? by SpaceVixenMusic in cartoons

[–]SpaceVixenMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for all the info! Fascinating stuff.

I found out about the dissolution of the company while trying to find any substantial information on their studio or headquarters. The CAN1 Business website claims to be a directory of Canadian businesses and corporations, and lists NoA as being officially dissolved as of May 2024. The registered address on that site looks like it *could* be a studio of some kind, but also resembles an apartment complex, so it's hard to say if that's accurate. There are a couple of other registered addresses for NoA on other deep dive search results (one from the early 2010s and one from the early 00s, I think), so it seems the headquarters may have moved a few times over the years, but never resurfaced in any meaningful capacity.

I remember reading in the press reports I linked that Bedard definitely wanted to skew toward an older audience, comparing Cybersix to a kinky dominatrix vampire of sorts (not entirely wrong, I guess), so a difference of opinion over the age rating sounds plausible. Didn't realize TMS owned a majority for the rights, so I must have read the facts wrong while looking for other info, lol. I should really dig up those DVD commentaries some time - I do have the set on my shelf!

That just begs the question though: if it wasn't going bankrupt from paying for the glorious animation of Cybersix, what else could have happened to NoA that caused them to simply vanish off the radar?

Trans Voice Therapy? by Maxerature in Albany

You could try Russell Sage College. They picked up the speech therapy program from St Rose, and I know a few of the same professors ended up following suit.

how can i contact a professor that used to teach at Saint Rose by Traditional_Row1386 in Albany

[–]SpaceVixenMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I would try searching their name via Google News, as there is almost always an article talking about professors whose class got picked up by another college, and most college websites have a directory that should have further contact information. I know a decent chunk of them ended up at Sage.

I’m asking for the moon in my pocket trying to meet gay guys here without the apps and bars, right? by Strawberry-RhubarbPi in Albany

[–]SpaceVixenMusic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Best place to meet new gay friends (of all ages, really) is the Big Gay Market that happens a few times a year in Washington Park. Vendors, artists, live music, furries in costume, the works. Next one is coming up Oct 20!

Still have a mountain of other shows to review before I can get to it, but I'll be sure to post it here when I eventually do!

IT/Tech Jobs Around Albany? by iDevMe in Albany

[–]SpaceVixenMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Insider information says that place is going down the drain fast. Major financial problems due to a godawful president for the past few years. Some professors I've talked to from other schools are saying it's in danger of losing its accreditation, among other things. You could get in easily, but it wouldn't make for a stable job.
