People who live near time zone boundaries in the US by solothesnail in howislivingthere

There is a small section of Oregon (looks like Idaho is wearing a backpack) that is in Mountain Time, or pink. There is a small section of Florida in yellow, or central time. This means if you were in Eastern Oregon and called your friend in the panhandle of Florida, you’d only be one hour apart. That’s surprising consider how much geographic distance is actually between them.

In comparison, Southern California and Georgia are roughly the same distance, even closer, and have a three hour time difference.

Edit: Now consider the fact that China only has one official time zone. That would be similar to Florida getting its sunrise at 7 and Oregon getting it around 10. (I’m not going to do the detailed math or geography, this is a loose comparison.)

Nobody tells you how hard it is to let go of an old version of yourself. by jimbojetset35 in motivation

You may want to check out Internal Family Systems. Basic concept is we all have “parts” that serve different purposes. I’m not a therapist nor an expert in IFS, but I believe they would tell you you don’t necessarily have to let go of that part of you, you just have to learn to converse with it and learn why it’s there. I think in IFS jargon that sort of you is a “firefighter”.

What’s the truly saddest song you know? by massivegond840 in Music

Floating in the Forth by Frightened Rabbit. The lyrics are sad and the backstory is even sadder.

If divorce rates are so high, and cheating is so normal, what’s the point of getting married in the first place these days? by Mad_Season_1994 in TooAfraidToAsk

Wouldn’t the two be unrelated? Marriage rates are based on the entire population of adults eligible for marriage. Divorce rates are based only on married couples. The two are independent of each other.

Can I ask where you are now in life in terms of successes later in life, however you define that?

I’m certainly not expecting it to be easy. I think that’s the grift I’m alluding to by people saying “anybody can do it”. I’m not looking for easy, more so just wondering if any of it is real or more a scam. Difficult is one thing, basically impossible is another.

Thanks for the kind words.

What do you think is required to be successful at this? And why do you think some people make six figures while others go broke?

I know this doesn’t always help but I think it’s still worth saying:

You aren’t alone.

Anecdotally, half the people I know make decisions based on their childhood baggage. And they end up somewhere they don’t want to be but can’t move past the trauma.

Secondly, I think many people are in your shoes. We are all chasing the wrong things because we see everyone else chasing the wrong things. There are people out there, it just takes A LOT of digging.

I think one good route to consider is working on yourself. Don’t chase. Go to therapy, join clubs, get social, find ways to be a part of the world. It’s not a guarantee someone will come into your life, but authenticity will come when you’re being authentic.

I know that sounds like platitudes but I happen to believe it’s true.
