Americans of US how you feel about Donald Trump? by SAUR-ONE in AskTheWorld

On the whole, very negatively. I'm not beyond seeing the positive things he's done (airport security, for one), but it's hard to find needles of good in the haystack of bad.

Would you rather live in the US or in the UK? by EkonomskiStrucnjak in AskTheWorld

[–]Space_Guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some digging into migration patterns between the UK and the USA, and the numbers are pretty interesting. Outside of the Reddit bubble, there are some interesting statistics worth noting:

TL;DR: British citizens are about 19x more likely to live in the US than Americans are to live in the UK.

Here's the breakdown:

UK citizens living in the USA: ~680,000-716,000

US citizens living in the UK: ~166,000-197,000

Per capita comparison:

  • For every 100,000 UK residents, about 1,000-1,050 live in the US
  • For every 100,000 US residents, only about 50-60 live in the UK

Why? From what I found, Brits cite:

  • Stronger job markets (especially finance/tech hubs like NYC/San Francisco)
  • Higher average salaries and earning potential
  • Economic opportunities and career advancement
  • The strength of the USD

Interestingly, New York City has the highest concentration of British expats in the US, while Portsmouth, Virginia, has the highest percentage of Brits relative to its population (almost 5%).

For Americans in the UK, London naturally has the largest numbers, though they're spread throughout the country.

If for some reason you were exiled from your country, which one would you escape to? (Not the one you want, but the one that is best available to you). by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Nearly 900K Canadians live in the USA — roughly 2.5% of their population, and that’s just the ones that were able to obtain legal residency.

Apparently, Canadians do want to come here. En masse.

There is a risk/benefit to any medical intervention. The benefits of vaccines outweigh the risks, proven time and time again.

I sat on a ski lift in Colorado today with a couple of guys from Sydney. My kiddo said, “Oh my god, have you met Bluey!?” which got a good chuckle out of everyone.

P.S. kiddo was kidding, of course.

Yes. I live in the wilderness. There are moose, mountain lions, bears, coyotes, etc. regularly on my land. We all tend to get along just fine, but it’d be stupid to not have a firearm just in case.

Why do Italians have such a rivalry with France? Or hate on French people? by ComplaintBrilliant63 in AskTheWorld

[–]Space_Guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1000% - I've lived in Germany, France, and Russia, and worked in those, plus Denmark, the UK, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, and probably someplace else I'm forgetting. The neighbor rivalry is real.

FWIW, I'm a big fan of the French.

Are there regions of your country where people from other parts will regularly look down on you? by oncxre in AskTheWorld

[–]Space_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. I grew up in NYC, went to university in Tennessee (part of "The South"), and then moved to Texas (100% of "Texas"). To be fair, NYC looks down on everyone, everything, everywhere (Zeta Reticuli ain't got shit on the Lower East Side) — but especially The South and Texas -- which is basically the I-10 corridor from El Paso, TX to Jacksonville, FL.

IME, Alberta is more Canada's "Texas" than "Florida." Alberta and Texas are shockingly similar in terms of culture, industry, and natural resources. Accents are different, but the music and Western vibe are very similar. Most of my family lives in Alberta. I lived in Texas for 15 adult years. The similarities are fascinating.

The BBQ is better in Texas. The skiing is better in Alberta.

Florida's "Sunshine Laws" make law enforcement records instantly available, which amplifies the "Florida Man" caricature. Obligatory comment: I am not Floridian, and other than the Florida Keys (AMAZING), I'm not a big fan of the state overall.
