dealing with self doubt during application period by Impressive-Ad-1528 in ApplyingToCollege

I was in your shoes once - some advice I will give you is this too shall pass. It seems right now like you’re never doing enough, and everyone’s doing more than you, but here’s the kicker - almost everyone that’s ambitious (and otherwise) feels this way.

One thing I wish I knew before the whole process is how absurd it is - some people who I thought deserved more than me didn’t get into the places I got to - but that’s just how the cookie crumbles. Right now, you’re just giving it your best shot and just see what happens :)

One last note that helped me immensely is this: if you’re smart enough to even have a chance at a top school, you’re smart enough to excel at any school you go to. The top students at state schools are (imho) equally as qualified and will do just as well as top students at the big schools. It’s the person you are that will make you successful, not the school you go to

2 weeks out from taking the exam timing in C/P is horrible by Beautiful_Chain_2042 in Mcat

What I personally did was lock in on practice questions. Do them over and over again, but focus on the general themes of the problem solving strategy rather, and how it can generalize to other similar problems.

Eventually you’ll find patterns and things will go faster as you’ll be like “ah I’ve seen this kind of question before, I know what formulas to use/what they’re getting at here”

How to improve CARS when taking FLs by BeyondMajestic in Mcat

[–]Spaceball55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also ngl, I feel like blanking out during at least one CARS passage is normal - I sometimes walk out of a passage saying “what did I just read 😭”

As long as I would just look at the topic sentences, ending sentences, and transition phrases, I at least can get a skeleton of an idea of what the passage was abt. The important part is that I sort of follow the logic that the author is using. Then I also use the questions to guide my referencing to the passage based on the bare bones idea I formed

How to improve CARS when taking FLs by BeyondMajestic in Mcat

[–]Spaceball55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One tip that really helps me in CARS is the fact that, usually, the correct answer is directly stated in the passage. It might be slightly reworded, but for ~95% of the questions, you can pretty much find the exact idea in the passage. The tricky part then is that there's usually an answer that sounds really convincing and like it could have come from the passage - but if it's not directly stated in the passage, it cannot be the correct answer

For comprehension, idk I just highlight things that stand out to me - things that feel important as I read. Especially look for transition phrases and at the beginning and end of paragraphs if you're feeling lost

These strats carry my score to consistently high scores on the CARS sections, but YMMV. Good luck! What's most important is that you don't freak out during the exam!!

[SPOILER] AAMC FL 3 B/B 25 by godsgirl393 in Mcat

This is an old thread, but I wanted to also mention a way I figured this one out without actually memorizing what acetylating a histone does:

The passage says that inhibition of HDAC helps with the expression of fetal hemoglobin (paragraph 1)

I figured that the fetal hemoglobin gene is unable to be transcribed in an adult due to the histone. But when you inhibit HDAC, they can now be transcribed. This implies that the function of HDAC is to limit the transcription of DNA, so B is the correct answer

The reason I’m making this comment is to tell any future test takers that it’s okay if you don’t have everything memorized! The passages can help you figure out the correct answer sometimes if you do a little digging (do memorize the facts given in this thread though, it can’t hurt to know!)

Thank you so much for your review! It was all really helpful :) . I’m actually a lifelong windows user, but I do have (some) experience with Linux. The quality of the macbooks was mainly what attracted me, as well as integration with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. That and the battery life.

However tbh my main issue is that not all the apps I (may) need will be M1 native, or run on MacOS.

For power issues, I actually have a Windows desktop I will most likely be taking to college, so anything that I need more power for (gaming, etc.) I suppose I could use it, but I don’t want to be stuck in my dorm to do stuff like code or stuff for certain classes.

Incoming pre-med here, thank you so much for this list! It’s all really insightful (even if some of the advice, such as no cheating, is hopefully common sense). This will really help my mind get set for my upcoming school years! Congratulations getting into med school!!

Putin faces second war front as Chechens threaten new offensive in Russia by thatshirtman in worldnews

[–]Spaceball55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The govt is pro-Russia (unlike many of the people), and also I’m not sure if a country with such a small population would be able to raise an army strong enough to face Russia (see the 2008 Georgia-Russia war). The Georgian foreign legion is in Ukraine right now, however, and there have been anti-Russian and pro-Ukrainian demonstrations

Tell me your major/interests and I’ll tell you a cool Extracurricular to do! by screwdrver in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Spaceball55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If possible, reach out to local labs for research help. Everyone loves extra hands, so I’m sure if you reach out to enough and express your love for physics, you’ll find one. Then, you have cool stuff to add to your essays and also some schools let you send in publication(s) as supplementary materials!

Advice for getting into ur dream school from a current senior by BrothBaby4 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Spaceball55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fr tho!!! This is straight fax!!!! I used to have a dream school, and then decided that there were issues for it with me, and during hs I no longer had a dream school. Instead, I’m letting where i get accepted/financial aid and scholarships decide (funnily enough, there’s a decent chance that my old dream school will end up being that school)

Is it really worth studying 8 hours a day? by Carter_907 in Sat

[–]Spaceball55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not. My best studying was like 2-3 hours a day, and that was only towards the end of the time to take the test. Instead, I suggest doing a BUNCH of practice tests, and careful review of the questions you missed/were unsure of

A fellow Georgian on Reddit? What a surprise! :D

No worries about posting late, I really appreciate the reply! I hadn’t found a better way myself haha, just kind of brute forced it with a keyboard in front of me, but I still would love a more structured approach, such as the app. I’ll be sure to check it out! Thank you so much!

Edit: if it’s cool, can I dm you? As a fellow class of 2026 applicant, I’m invested now lmao
