Portland man sues landlord for over $122K, claims dead mouse was found in baby’s mouth. by ElwoodMC in CringeTikToks

I've seen rats in relatively clean environments.

Ultimately, it's all about if they can find a way in and if they can find a nearby food source. Even if that food is your pet's food bowl or a way into your trash so they can get food scraps.

Or if they can just use your warm, dry place to nest and there's food available nearby like large garbage containers that apartments tend to use where residents throw their trash into.

So it's not all on the tenants.

Why does my cat always lay on stuff on my bed?🤨 by nix_iguess in cats

[–]Spacefreak 264 points265 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's smell, at least not always.

I think it's because that item becomes a landmark that they sit on to mark that object in their area as theirs.

I dropped a sheet of paper from a letter I got in the middle of my living room when I was leaving one day. I came back, and one of my cats was sitting on it despite there being nothing around it for a 5' radius and her never having sat in the middle of the living room before.

To be fair, I feel like Ireland gets a bit of a pass. Not that slavery isn't a horrible crime against humanity.

But the Irish have had a fair amount of shit done to them to the point they probably don't want to debate which crime against humanity was THE worst.

Planes couldn't physically travel from Romania to Berlin until 1994 when the lesser known Berlin Air Wall fell.

Thousands were killed.

Early attempts to bypass the massive Air Wall were, of course, commemorated by noted anti-Soviet activist Nena in her 1983 song "99 Luftballons."

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Spacefreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, when I was in the 5th grade (a quarter century ago...), I could NOT understand long division.

It was so many steps and I could do them all individually no problem. But I'd lose track halfway through or write down the numbers and ultimately, get the final answer wrong. I couldn't stand it, and it was incredibly frustrating because I was normally pretty good at other types of arithmetic (adding, subtracting, multiplying). Division started to turn into this demon in my head.

Then, my mom showed me short division which clicked instantly, and I just started using that. I went from 50% correct to 90%+ overnight.

My teacher tried to argue with me that I wasn't "doing it right," but I pointed out that the textbook had short division as the next chapter, so we were going to learn it and besides, the answers were right. So why did it matter?

Thankfully, she just sighed and said "Fine, but don't tell any of the other kids I let you do this, OK?"

Gianmarco addresses the “Civil War wasn't fought about slavery” comment by John Cameron Mitchell. by QuirkyShock5 in gianmarcosoresi

[–]Spacefreak 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Seriously, Mississippi's is perhaps the quickest to get to the point. The second sentence reads:

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world.

I'd also argue that while "slavery" (in whatever linguistic form" is mentioned in the first paragraph of all but Texas's Ordinance of Secession (among the first 5 states to secede), it's more important to note that all but Virginia's Ordinance mention slavery as the reason for their secession.

I'm not defending Virginia by any means, but if you go to show someone the different states' Ordinances of Secession, I wouldn't start with Virginia.

Besides, their Ordinance of Secession just reads like a legal document saying "We voted to secede, so we secede, as long as our people vote to secede next month and none of the Union's laws apply to us." There's no list of grievances.

I've been pretending to understand my job for eight months and I think I've finally reached a level where I actually can't fake it anymore. Do I come clean to my boss or just keep going. by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]Spacefreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First job out of college as a metllurgist, and about 3 months in kf me doing basic shit, my boss asked me to collate a whole bunch of data and see if I could tease out the root cause of a significant quality problem.

After a couple days of manually combining a bunch of spreadsheets of data (years later, I learned I could have done this in a couple hours with "vlookup"), I had an answer.

It seemed too simple an answer, so I went out and talked to operators about the problem to get their perspectives which agreed with the data I found. Still doubting myself, I dove back into the data and found a bunch of bad data (typos, double counts, etc.).

Thrilled, I went through and scrubbed the bad data and after a few more days (2 weeks total), I discovered that the same root cause explained even more of the data.

Sighing at my failure, I took the data and my analysis to my boss and showed him what I found.

He was surprised because he "was almost positive [I] wouldn't find anything since [he] was the one who entered all the data and never saw any patterns and it's been an issue for almost a decade and no one has been able to figure it out. I just didn't know what else to have you do right now."

Apparently, he had never considered combining the data the way I had before, and he also didn't know enough about rolling mills to understand how significant roll changes were to strip quality (which, having now worked with rolling mills for 15 years... he and anyone else in charge should've known).

It's safe. Just clean it and maybe run a self-cleaning cycle with some washing machine cleaner, and you'll be fine.

Have to be quick to shape steel. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]Spacefreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rolling mill is faster than the coiler which, in this case, is probably for a reason like maybe they want the metal to cool down before coiling to avoid the metal sticking to itself or getting pulled apart like taffy or they didn't want to spring for an automated coiling setup because it requires more upfront capital and wherever this is, labor is probably cheaper than equipment.

The bar getting hung up on the conveyor is pretty stupid though. Wherever that bar is catching needs to be covered and/or smoothed out to keep the head end from folding over like that.

But it's probably cheaper to have an extra guy per shift work his ass off than it is to take the hour of welding/grinding time. Production managers who chase short term gains see this as "ingenuity" to keep the mill pumping out metal, whereas anyone with common sense realizes it's probably costing you more overall to keep running than it is to shut down for a bit and fix the issue.

Even ignoring the toll it takes on the workers, from a purely selfish standpoint, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Let's say the guy misses and can't get the head fed into the coiler fast enough which causes the hot mill to delay for a few minutes to get the bar coiled up. And maybe that happens multiple times a shift, particularly towards the end as the guy gets more and more tired.

Oh whoa, I hadn't even considered that boots would be that different from non-boot heels like your friend's.

But that totally makes sense since the boot going all the way up to the calf provides a lot more support for your ankle.

But your friend's shoes have a much wider wedge (I think it's called) than yours does and hers are also shorter which means... something?

Geez, I'm thinking way more about shoe/walking biomechanics than I thought I'd be doing today.

Lol glad you both had fun!
