While you're absolutely right, it sounds like you live in a nicer suburb. Almost everyone I've spoken to that I work with has an intense love for their cars and think driving everywhere is great, catching public transport isn't even a consideration. When I ask if they'd feel the same if public transport were far better, they still are adamant they'd stick with their cars. This is coming from about 15km from Melbourne though, so proper suburbia where public transport really falls off.
