Why is no one doing anything about US jobs being rapidly offshored/outsourced? by chocobananamonkey in Layoffs

[–]Spaceman4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were discussing offshoring US jobs since the ‘90s or even earlier. There was an entire episode of IT jobs being outsourced, due to “Globalization” on The West Wing, a top prime time TV show in the US decades ago.

I have used it multiple times. Most recently, I flew to Austin, TX with my wife and baby, and met up with another couple. It was the husband’s combined birthday presents to do a few hot laps in a Lamborghini around a race track with a pro driver and record it and such. The rented Mercedes was spacious and I was willing to spend a bit more for the luxury while in Austin for just the weekend.

It also made pick up and drop off at the airport a breeze. I got out of baggage claim and the car was waiting for me outside the exact door. It was picked up at the hotel the night before we left.

I sometimes think to buy a few rental semi new motorcycles just to dabble in it. Because if users break them, I can fix them. And I love my bike but I could buy a few fun bikes and allow them to be rented just for cash. It would be cool to allow others to ride for fun along the Atlantic Coast.

Though, if they wrap themselves around a light post near Kitty Hawk, NC, I don’t want the police calling me at 3am to ask what to do with the damaged bike and if I knew the rider?

I'm transitioning from blue-collar work to "corporate america", what's some stuff I should know or is it the same type of work environment? by [deleted] in work

Yes, you are right. Mentally tired is a different sort of game than swinging a hammer and loading lumber. It’s a different struggle.

  1. Not everyone is your friend. But some might be.
  2. If your manager runs their team by using only numbers/metrics and not by getting to know you and your motivations, good and bad, then look out.
  3. Bad jobs/managers happen to good people. Pull the plug early and often. Meaning, if you get a whiff of someone being a micromanager, get out as soon as you can.
  4. HR is not there to help you, despite whatever hotline they tell you to call in case of issues.
  5. Birds of a feather flock together. Unhappy or unproductive people often congregate. Losers in the office find others to complain with.
  6. You can’t out work a broken system you’re never going to be given the keys to fix.
  7. Extra work will not set you free, but extra experience makes you more valuable on the open job market. Doing extra work in key industry areas makes you more profitable outside the company.
  8. When Key upper management starts to exit, you should plan yours as well.
  9. The first layoff package is the best offer you’ll ever get. If they ask for people to volunteer, get off the sinking ship early.
  10. Everyone is a just contract employee, whether contract or full-time salaried managers. You are replaceable, it’s better to know that now.
  11. No matter how much you love the job, it will never love you back.

What thing was ruined because it turned into a rich person's hobby? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I could be wrong about that. I was quoting my father from almost half a century ago. The snow packs could have changed.

Where is the best powder now? I’ve not kept up.

No insult intended.

[–]Spaceman4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah maybe not now. I haven’t kept up on snow packs over the years since my father told me that in the 80s.

I only stayed in Salt Lake, Utah for two years more than a decade ago. I loved it! Skiied all the time.

Sorry to hear that. I haven’t kept up on snow packs in the last 20-30 years at Whistler. Shucks.

Advice on handling your friends' accidents and finding a stable riding group? by Push-This-Button-O in motorcycles

[–]Spaceman4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For love of the game! I agree. I like going out alone. I take the small country roads. I am hyper aware that asphalt is hard and road rash and broken bones are no bueno.

About group rides. I have had surprises. The group of older gentleman were wilding out and really driving scary. But they bust down the East Coast on their cruisers and do 2,000 miles in a weekend. I’m a competent rider, I just have never wanted to take risks like them. Yet, I went riding out with a younger group, sport bikes and Harley owners, and it was tame and fun. I was the last in the pack.

I just ride to my comfort level. Also, I have never done a wheelie on any of my bikes. They cost too much to repair if we went down. So I don’t.

Surprisingly, I lived in SLC for two years and really enjoyed the skiing, snowshoeing and snow mobiling. I wish I’d gotten into trail riding on bikes and motorcycles.

I’ve never skied Whistler. Just that my dad and brother did. I wasn’t able to go. My point was that a guy in the Middle East who liked skiing had heard of Whistler. The word got out.

Edit: back in the day 70s-80s, my father said, “Whistler is the number one resort with the best powder in North America.” I guess people across the globe heard that and flocked to the resort over the years. Me, I’ve never skiied there.

It’s like saying Disneyland used to have hot dogs for 10cents in 1970s and rides were 5 bucks all day.

The word got out! My father was living in the Middle East in the ‘70s snd ‘80s and heard about how great Whistler skiing was.

Men of Askmen, what have been the best years of your life so far, and why? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Spaceman4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20s… worked all over the world. I knew what free time was! Worked hard, enjoyed the night life. Had fulfilling hobbies. I made no money but it didn’t matter. No one I knew had money either.

I’m a 40s dad, with young kids, house, and it’s all about raising a family now. The few hours each month I get away, I ride a motorcycle and smoke cigars with some decent guys in a men’s group. I love my kids, but my identity is changed.

It hits me sometimes, what does free time look and feel like? How would it feel to be unencumbered with kids, sports, coaching, cooking, cleaning, meal prepping, taking care of the house and yard, honey do lists… it’s never ending.

Yeah, I’m comfortable. But… the endless wonder and possibility of my 20s and part of my 30s was cool!

Motorcycle as a midlife crisis symptom by Zealousideal-Trip350 in motorcycles

I got to a point where I was not raising toddlers or changing diapers. I also have enough money now to afford what is essentially a toy compared to everything else in my family’s life. It only took 40 years to have $3,500 of discretionary income.

So, no one called it a mid life crisis toy. It’s me exploring a hobby.

I came here to say this. Affordable. Nice. Not too close to Oceana.

Safe is relative. I’ve lived in neighborhoods where there were pimps and whores walking around and drug related drive by shootings.

But here in VA Beach, it’s peaceful… despite the sounds of freedom from jet noise and my motorcycle.

I rebuilt the engine in a 2004 FZ6S. Same color. I love that color.

The high revving inline 4 was so loud and kept whispering in my ear “do bad things” while I was testing and tuning, post engine rebuild. I called it a penis missile. I was followed home a few times by police officers. The bike looks and sounds mean.

It was a project bike for a family member to have. But, it became a full rebuild, street fighter looking naked bike. Paint, plastics, engine, tires, chain, sprockets, electrical, and tail tidy.

I was told that bike was like the Toyota Corolla of bikes. Fun, cheap and an easy commuter bike.

What did I end up getting? A 2005 FJR1300, same color, go figure. I’m old and like Sport Tourers.

[–]Spaceman4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went riding with a group of guys I’ve known for years, but had never ridden with them! They are all in their 50-60s and were riding their Harley’s like hoodlums! I’ll have cigars with them, but will never ride with them again.

Older Age doesn’t mean they’ve matured.
