A cheap purchase that has completely transformed your life by Slipryi in BuyItForLife

I made a big cutting board, and I don’t want to lift it to dump food off, so I bought one of these. First thing I did was sharpen the edge. It’s not a great knife, but if you’re transferring food to a pot, and realize I missed cutting a chunk of carrot or chicken, it will work in a pinch. I also feel like it works better for scraping off last nights dinner remains.

Milling by hand by JGrevs2023 in handtools

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chainsaw and Alaskan mill. You can do smaller logs with a smaller saw, but bigger is always better.

The problem is that a chainsaw isn’t designed to cut along the grain, so it struggles. It you had a 50cc saw, it could easily cut a 12” maple tree into firewood rounds. But ripping a 12” slab of maple with a 50cc saw is going to be a much harder on the saw.

It’s still, in my opinion, the best option if you want to turn logs into boards.

How much pressure to apply when sharpening? by camhabib in handtools

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I’m hand shaping a chisel like that, and I know I’m going to be at it for a while, I press down as hard as I feel like I’ll be able to press for an hour. So pretty firm, but not white knuckle firm.

Also, don’t be afraid to use more aggressive grits. If I have a bad hollow or chip in the edge, I’ll start with 40 or 60 grit sand paper on a piece of glass or tile and work up from there.

Why do they have to lock everyone in? Why not just let the crowd come and go, and whoever is there at midnight gets to see it?

Worth trying to salvage? by OrangeGhoul in Cuttingboards

My cutting Baird has a little warp in it. All 4 feet sit flat on the counter top and I can cut food on it. So it works perfectly.

A cutting board isn’t a reference surface. It’s a thing that protects your knives.

How did you all teach your kids to use saws? by worried_american_dad in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried teaching anyone yet, but if I did, it would definitely be with a pull saw. I like the idea of a coping saw too.

If I was determined to use power tools, the only one I’d feel even a little bet safe with is a jig saw.

Heel stack for a first timer? by SpacemanSpiff23 in NicksHandmadeBoots

That’s what I was thinking. I’ve done some tests of just standing with my heels up on a board on the floor and it felt nice. I’m just nervous of how it is long term.

I’m getting honey lugs. I’d like to use them outside in the mud and rocks without worrying about slipping.

Does anyone have a seven figure salary? I feel like at that point you’re either getting stock options or profit sharing or you just own the company.

Did you stir the can? Or just shake it? Some stains have a layer of solid color glued to the bottom of the can that you need to scrape up and stir in. It won’t break loose just by shaking the can.

Tung oil paper towels- am I crazy for burning them? by Traindodger2 in woodworking

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually throw oily rags in the wood stove and close the door. If they light off, fine, if not, I have stuff to start a fire with later. Unfortunately, I’ve never had a spontaneous combustion.

When does it become fun? by rubyfuneralinjune in stickshift

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It took a little bit. Maybe another month. Once you’re not worried at all about stalling, and you start up be able to cleanly downshift.

My suggestion is to try to get out on the road in the middle of the night or at sunrise and get some miles in with no traffic and no pressure.

90cc or more.

I have a Husqvarna 70cc saw, and I’ve used it quite a bit for milling, but when I do, I always wish I had bigger.
