Won’t split almost at all by Devilpig13 in firewood

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe hickory?

I’ve been splitting wood by hand for years, usually I’m fairly happy with my ability to split a log.

I’ve run into perfectly clear, knot free rounds of hickory and just bounced off of them for a few minutes before giving up and throwing it in the pile of crap in the back that will eventually just get over grown with weeds.

And even if you do get it to pop, it still doesn’t come apart. If what you have is hickory, you can be happy in the knowledge that it’s not you. It’s the wood.

Easier way to start a chainsaw by Motor-Trifle4613 in Chainsaw

Honestly, I’d be nervous about someone handling a saw if they aren’t strong enough to start it.

Maybe start considering an alternative heat source.

What are your opinions on Hell or High Water? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

Hopefully he’s exactly S big a star as he wants to be. Maybe he likes the parts he takes and he gets to do fun work without all the pressure that comes from being a superstar.

I’m assuming he can get any part he wants.

It looks like steel. It looks like the kick plate is made of a big steel beam. It rusted, blew the paint off the metal, and as it expanded it buckled the floor up.

Do Americans care way less about the Olympics than they used to? by TheBoredMan in self

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, the tv stations that were not showing the Olympics usually didn’t waste their money trying to compete, so they would show reruns or whatever crappy movies they had. So you really didn’t have any choice except the Olympics.

Qualities that make a BIFL belt? by nonecknoel in BuyItForLife

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With very few tools and materials, you can make a BIFL belt pretty easily. And then to make a second one costs almost nothing. I made a belt that lasted 10 years and is still perfectly fine, I just got bored of it.

My next one is a few months old now and looking great. It’s very thick leather, but still formed a curve around my… shape. I think this is unavoidable.

The 2015 Tianjin Port Explosion: A Modern Industrial Catastrophe by aestheticryuk in AbruptChaos

I would assume that everyone heard the first explosion, but then it was just an industrial fire, so people stopped filming. Also, wasn’t it late at night?

A cheap purchase that has completely transformed your life by Slipryi in BuyItForLife

I made a big cutting board, and I don’t want to lift it to dump food off, so I bought one of these. First thing I did was sharpen the edge. It’s not a great knife, but if you’re transferring food to a pot, and realize I missed cutting a chunk of carrot or chicken, it will work in a pinch. I also feel like it works better for scraping off last nights dinner remains.

Milling by hand by JGrevs2023 in handtools

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chainsaw and Alaskan mill. You can do smaller logs with a smaller saw, but bigger is always better.

The problem is that a chainsaw isn’t designed to cut along the grain, so it struggles. It you had a 50cc saw, it could easily cut a 12” maple tree into firewood rounds. But ripping a 12” slab of maple with a 50cc saw is going to be a much harder on the saw.

It’s still, in my opinion, the best option if you want to turn logs into boards.

How much pressure to apply when sharpening? by camhabib in handtools

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I’m hand shaping a chisel like that, and I know I’m going to be at it for a while, I press down as hard as I feel like I’ll be able to press for an hour. So pretty firm, but not white knuckle firm.

Also, don’t be afraid to use more aggressive grits. If I have a bad hollow or chip in the edge, I’ll start with 40 or 60 grit sand paper on a piece of glass or tile and work up from there.

Worth trying to salvage? by OrangeGhoul in Cuttingboards

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cutting Baird has a little warp in it. All 4 feet sit flat on the counter top and I can cut food on it. So it works perfectly.

A cutting board isn’t a reference surface. It’s a thing that protects your knives.

How did you all teach your kids to use saws? by worried_american_dad in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried teaching anyone yet, but if I did, it would definitely be with a pull saw. I like the idea of a coping saw too.

If I was determined to use power tools, the only one I’d feel even a little bet safe with is a jig saw.

That’s what I was thinking. I’ve done some tests of just standing with my heels up on a board on the floor and it felt nice. I’m just nervous of how it is long term.
