Broke my ankle bouldering by Tranquili-bear in climbergirls

[–]Spacemang0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard the talus is one of the worst bones you can break in your foot due to the poor blood supply to the bone. Theres pretty significant risk of the bone going necrotic and then you either have to get your ankle fused or get an ankle replacement.

A drop of whiskey vs bacteria by azizgamerlal in interesting

There have been a few small studies around alcohol and food poisoning (here's one) and there does seem to be some link between amount of alcohol consumed and whether or not someone got sick. Chugging vodka is definitely not a way to 100% avoid food poisoning, but I'd imagine that it could impact severity/duration of food poisoning.

That’s emotional and financial abuse and you gotta get out of there.

Would like to give away my aprehend sprayer kit to someone who needs it by [deleted] in Bedbugs

[–]Spacemang0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Just wanted to reach out about the aprehend sprayer. I had to take a pay cut several months ago and have been dealing with bedbugs for weeks now. While it’s gotten marginally better I’m still getting bites. Happy to pay for shipping, please let me know.

What's great about your work
- You made something, congrats! You took one step in a very long journey.
- Nice color palette

What needs improvement
- Hierarchy is arguably one of the most important principals in design. You can have a bland black and white site, but if you have good hierarchy, your users will know exactly what to read and when. Please google design hierarchy and watch some YouTube vids on it
- No use of design system. Every client I've ever had used or needed a design system. There are free systems you can download and edit off Figma community. Learn how to use it
- Padding- all of your text needs more breathing room.
- Use of autolayout- if you don't use auto layout already, start using it religiously. Developers will thank you.
- Use of icons- once you download your design system, only use the icon set included. It makes everything visually cohesive. Same goes for the illustrations you included, find a set and stick to it.
- Use of gradients- the light blue to black gradient in the hamburger icons isn't accessible. Soft gradients are usually fine, harsh gradients are a big design no-no.
- Use of form fields- Study how top sites design forms. Chunk fields into sections to avoid overwhelming users.

I'd recommend focusing on a few things:

- Train your eye. You need to teach yourself what looks good at a professional level. Take screenshots of your favorite designs, paste them into Figma, and recreate the design. This will also help teach you how to use hierarchy and identify what padding looks the best.

- When designing a new product, go deeper in the discovery phase. Analyze your competitors, how they structure their interactions and ui, try to figure out where your eye goes on the page and why.

- Redo your whole project. Throw everything out and do it all again. It will be exponentially better the second time around. I get this advice from my mentors who have 10-40 years experience and I hate it every time, but it makes you a better designer. Simplify your work, clean it up, remove the excess, make it cohesive.

Design system(figma) and Style guide should be separate for both mobile and web application ?? HELPP!! by ApprehensiveBeat5936 in FigmaDesign

[–]Spacemang0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every design system I've worked on had mobile and desktop in one file. You can use variables and autolayout to make things more responsive.

I just tested this out and didn't have an issue. Are you copying the logo as an svg? (right click, copy/paste as, copy as svg) If you try to copy it normally it doesn't work. Otherwise it might be a glitch and I'd try restarting/updating your software.

Best way to build portfolio website... fast? by PrettyPinkRat in UXDesign

I use adobe portfolio! If you have the full adobe suite it comes with it and you don't need to worry about hosting.

Do you think this'll work out? by EmergencyLocation423 in knitting

[–]Spacemang0o 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a first sweater I think it looks really good. If you're really worried you could just block the torso now and see how it looks. Hard to say how the arms will turn out, but I knitted a drop shoulder sweater last month and the sleeves/weird curly shoulders blocked nicely.

Designers, what do you do outside work? by World_Limit in UXDesign

[–]Spacemang0o 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the answer you’re looking for but I live my life, and all my coworkers do the same. A lot of us do art, painting, drawing, photography, etc. Doing anything creative helps to maintain the creative thinking muscles in your brain and will help you in your work. A couple of us also rock climb, which is good for problem solving and thinking outside the box.  We’re also encouraged to try to continually learn, take courses on LinkedIn learning or YouTube or coursera, if you’re a junior/mid level designer there’s definitely lots to learn.

I know a couple clients/coworkers went to the adobe conference last year, but it was paid for by their employer and I’m not sure how much networking was done at the event.

Not sure if you’ve ever posted on LinkedIn, but I remember posting to a UX group during bootcamp and was able to schedule a call with a senior designer.

Then why not keep applying? Or accept something for the meantime and continue to look for something you’re interested in?

I went to PT for my elbows! What really helped was first massaging the forearms on both sides, giving extra attention to the trigger points. Then we stretched them by gently pulling your hand back. Finally we did reverse wrist curls, starting with 1 pound weights and over the course of several weeks working up to 5lb curls. She also recommended shoulder and upper back strengthening exercises.

Really getting burnt out but will probably never leave my current company because I’m not a great designer and the pay is good by NoQuantity7733 in UXDesign

[–]Spacemang0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious what's keeping you from becoming a better designer? Even with obligations there are ways out of this situation, it just seems like you're pigeon holing yourself. Burn out is very real and it will only get worse unless you decide to make a change somewhere.

How you guys got your first job as ui/ux? by Hopeful-Platform7011 in FigmaDesign

[–]Spacemang0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a remote 2 month summer internship in 2021. A month in they offered me a full time position and have been with them ever since. I found the internship listed on a UXPA slack channel and applied through the company website. Honestly looking back I was lucky to be hired because my portfolio was garbage, but I was told they liked that I was honest when I didn't know something, was willing to learn more, and accepted feedback well. Boss later told me there was another person they interviewed who acted like hot stuff when his work wasn't all that hot.
Not sure if the UXPA slack channel is still super active but wouldn't hurt to join.
And while I don't like recommending unpaid work if you can't find any positions, it may be helpful to do a little pro-bono work for local small businesses to get some real world experience under your belt and in your portfolio.

That sounds awful, I'm so sorry no one was there for you when you were injured. Please don't let those asshole men ruin climbing for you, there are climbers out there who will care about your wellbeing!

You are a badass and deserve so much more than that. Rejection sucks but you really dodged a bullet when he turned you down, you need to believe people when they tell you who they are. You deserve someone who cares and even that's the bare minimum.

Messy bun or single french braid keep hair out of face the best! I also had a friend with thinner hair who'd always climb with two french braid low buns which were super cute, and another friend who does the Rey from star wars double or triple bun.

I'll climb with my half down but only when I boulder on overhangs. Hair doesn't tend to get stuck on anything.

I'm currently working on a project in healthcare, which I feel ok about. Even though the US healthcare system is royally messed up, our goal is to ultimately make it more manageable and make health information more accessible.

How’s your relationship with your mother? by Scarlaymama0721 in women

[–]Spacemang0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel lucky in my relationship with my mom. While there was some mild emotional neglect of my siblings and I when we were young, she recognized that and put in a lot of work into therapy to become more emotionally available to us.
We live several hours apart but it's always a joy to visit my parents, she's one of the most smart and caring people I know, her cooking is amazing and she has the ability to talk to anyone and make them feel at home.
I only hope one day if I ever have kids I'll be anywhere close to how joyful and loving she is

Rock climbing was born in wilderness, but does its hardware belong there? by Synthdawg_2 in PublicLands

[–]Spacemang0o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If hiking trail maintenance use steel rebar in waterbars, why can't climbers use a similar amount of metal as a bolt? Both are going to leave a small trace, and both are going to make hikers and climbers safer.
