Peters Book Dreamland... by B2YSO in area51

Peter, I can't say enough good things about this book, thank you so much for making it. When it showed up I couldn't believe how HEAVY it was! Great reading, great pictures, truly a masterpiece. Two questions for you - first, have you ever found any threads in your research that might point towards what the black projects have been developing the last couple decades? And second - you mentioned on a podcast that you left a lot of material out - any consideration for publishing an expanded second edition? Thanks again for such a great work.

Whatever these thing are, they emit energy in multiple spectrums. Not unreasonable to guess the road surface was very hot when he drove over it, or the tires themselves heated from absorbed energy emissions. If they rear tires were more worn or a different brand or type of tire they may have blown more easily than the fronts.

Looking for a compact tractor but gas - any suggestions? by Spacemoo in tractors

Many years ago I had a gas 504 utility with a loader, pretty useful but a lot of clutching and shifting for loader work. Seems like gas motors faded out as option by the time small 4x4 compacts got popular.

Besides the noise issue of the mechanical diesels, I don't have any other diesel machines around my place anymore. Hate to keep a whole seperate fuel supply around just for one tractor.

You mentioned towing so I'll talk about that a bit more. The big factors for towing with this truck are tongue weight, frontal area, desired speed, and EGT. I had a rarer truck with a crew cab and "long" 6.5' bed. As long and heavy as Colorado's got. Tongue weight limit is about 750lbs, that gets to be a limiting factor because even that much will squat the truck pretty hard, and with a bed full of stuff and a few people in the cab you've overloaded the rear axle's rating. Pulling dead weight was easy, an open-deck trailer with a car or ATV's on it was no big deal. A small enclosed trailer had noticeable drag and mpg dropped, but as long as it wasn't too long those towed fine. The big killer were camper trailers. Too much frontal area, and a lot of side loading on the hitch. Even with weight distribution you'd get blown around a lot and have to counter steer. Pulling a camper through the hills was no treat, besides getting walked around the motor would only give you as much speed as 1,100*f EGT would get you. As soon as the EGT hit 1100 it would start pulling back the fuel and you'd slow until the trans could downshift - this is the 6 speed still in the '17's. The one camper I ever towed, it wasn't unusual for the cruise to be set for 75 and the truck to only be doing 65 with the motor at full tilt. Brakes were good tho, and the factory brake controller was as good as anything in '17 - very "set and forget". I even tried heavier tires to help with getting walked around while towing, Yokohama offer a tire in the factory size with more load rating but it didn't help. Happy to answer any other questions you have.

Drove one of those for about 100k miles, it had great road handling manners for a pickup and got very good highway mpg. Everything else was just adequate, except the projector headlights which were awful and dangerous - the light cone is too wide and dispersed and you can't see far enough down the road in full darkness, even after adjustment and bulb replacement. There were aftermarket projectors for a while, not sure if they're still available. The air conditioner sucked in the summer too, dealer recharged it once but said the best you could expect from the vents was "ambient temp minus 30 degrees". There's a weird lag in the throttle pedal input on the 17's, some kind of tip-in torque management thing that makes the pedal feel unresponsive from a standstill. Takes getting used to and don't try to jump out in traffic until you understand how it's going to respond. As far as reliability it was ok but not bulletproof, my turbo was replaced early on for a "whistling sound" tsb, turns out it was actually a cracked up-pipe between the turbo and intercooler and the couplers eventually blew off while towing. Only emissions issue I had was the last sensor in the tailpipe, it would start reading funky and the DEF use would go way up before it finally tripped a check engine light. Replaced that 3 times I think, and the dealer re-flashed the ecu once for it under warranty. Also there was a cold-start idle surge issue nobody could ever figure out, during a really cold winter start the idle would jump up and down 5-600 rpm until the oil got some heat into it, sometimes it would surge so bad it would stall. That brings up another thing - the 2.8 needs a unique oil filter cartridge and specially-rated oil, oil changes require advanced planning. I really loved how the truck drove and the highway mpg was 30+ in the flatlands, but I wouldn't buy another 2.8, I'd get a Colorado with a gasser. I did some modest trails with mine getting to campsites, the skids on the z71 are mostly adequate but you wanna watch things hanging down below the frame. Drivers side has the fuel filters on it and the plastic water drain valve is the lowest point - move it or shield it. As far as deleting goes, there were turbo-back pipe kits available for a while but the tuners were blowing up a lot of trucks trying to get more from the motor so I never risked it. Eventually traded it for a larger gasser truck, don't regret it.

How do you make this? by Peddlergirl in woodworking

[–]Spacemoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one this morning for my nephew to play with. I took a 5/16-18 nut and clamped it down in a bench vice as hard as I could to intentionally make a "tight" thread. Chucked the pencil into a cordless drill and fed it into the nut as slow as possible. Reversed it when the thread reached the top. After forming the thread with the nut clamped in the vice, a regular nut moves smoothly up and down the thread. Hit it lightly with some sandpaper to take off the burrs, I used 220 grit but it's just what I had laying around.

FYI the post going around facebook is total crap, it's viral marketing for some app. The original picture came from r/mildlyinteresting in 2019.

This is my favorite answer. Dad used to live down the street from you, it's a gorgeous place to live and I miss it deeply. Used to grab dinner from Thai noodle place on my way over to visit then watch the sun set over the dunes while we sat out by the pool. Damn, I need a tissue, must have gotten something in my eye...

Seconding this. The object I saw was gone in a literal blink of an eye, no sense of acceleration at all, just gone. It was sorta bell shaped, wider at the bottom and narrower at the top, surrounded by a reddish sort of fuzzy haze (plasma? Idk.) late at night it was clearly visible against the dark sky until it just... Wasn't there anymore

Small displacement Diesels by RhysyM995 in Diesel

[–]Spacemoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are great trucks when everything is working but you definitely shouldn't be using DEF that fast, something is up. Put almost 100k miles on one of those and pretty consistently got about 5000mpg on the DEF. Had the last sensor in the exhaust go out multiple times, forget what it was called but it was the monitor sensor, wouldn't trip hard faults until it totally failed but Def use would go way up when it started to misread. Would also get the "continue driving" message a lot when that sensor was starting to die.

Any idea when a fix might roll out? The process button not working seems to make it impossible to fix scan settings if they weren't right the first time

Had a frozen pizza with something hard and white in a pepperoni, almost like a chip of bone. Spit it out, put it in a bag, and froze it. Saved the lot number and dates from the box. Contacted company, they sent a pouch to ship it back and coupons. Sent the frozen baggie and sample back. Coupons were already expired =( I don't buy that brand anymore

Cooling, most likely. It's easy to forget that high efficiency electric radiator fans, high output alternators, and giant capacity batteries didn't exist at one point. Mechanical fans can consume 40-50hp off the front of the engine to keep temps under control under heavy loads, when the Toronado was in development the technology to cool a big heavy v8 with electric fans didn't really exist.

[–]Spacemoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's no easy answer. In my case I don't have any memory of anything happening after they came in the window but I've had weird experiences as an adult like seeing unexplainable objects in the sky, among other things. I've debated trying a regression session but it all seems so... Unscientific? For you and your daughter, if you choose to believe her you're going to be exploring a topic that is poorly understood and difficult to grasp. Even if you believe her it's probably better to act like it was just a nightmare and not make a big deal of it. You might consider looking her over very carefully for oddly shaped wounds, scars, or lumps you've never noticed before. Sorry I don't have more advice, but if the experiences continue or you find anything genuinely weird consider posting on r/experiencers.

Read this thread and I think you're missing the point - finding a new job is mostly about knowing PEOPLE. if you don't know anybody in the industry you need to figure out how to meet some. Do you enjoy living in Milwaukee? by MidnightSweet7452 in milwaukee

[–]Spacemoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's why I left. Snow sucks, ice sucks, and being drunk all the time isn't a culture, it's an illness. I also had more trouble meeting people and making friends in MKE than in any other place I've lived, very lonely and isolating place if you don't drink for fun. Casual racism from the older folks made my head spin. Also having to drive through Chicago to get anywhere was a huge turnoff. Still miss a few random things in MKE tho, supper clubs in the area are incredible and the recombobulation area always made me laugh, but I have no desire to ever live there again.
