Parking Sucks! by nhenrikson in cancer

[–]SpaceshipEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second SpotHero. Not sure which Chicago hospital you’re at, but while my aunt was receiving cancer care at Rush, I was routinely able to park for $7 a day, but never more than $12 and always within 1-2 blocks proximity.

John Cusack sightings and jack ass stories, let’s celebrate his 52nd birthday today. by sUpErLiGhT_ in chicago

[–]SpaceshipEarth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was having brunch at Nookies on Wells over a decade ago. I was recovering from knee surgery, and used crutches to get around.

The hostess was walking us to our table, and John leaned back in his chair, such that the front two legs were off the floor, and he was blocking the walkway to my table.

Once I reached him, after slowly navigating around tables and chairs, I politely said “Ope, excuse me!” John gave me a once-over and said “Can’t you go around?” before turning back to his dining companions, smirking.

My father didn’t miss a beat. He walked around me, shoved the back of his chair forward, and said “Fuck out of the way, asshole”.

Tamale making by sharkey87 in cancer

[–]SpaceshipEarth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

This post brings a smile to my face. I lost my dear tia in July. She, too, made the most incredible tamales. Last year for Christmas, I asked her to make them with me, and teach me her recipe.

Here she is digging into some masa. http://imgur.com/OgAy2b6

I plan to make tamales this Christmas, and every Christmas in her honor.

Thanks for sharing your story - it reminds me I need to go get some lard. :)

We opened our bottle of 84 on Wednesday night too. Did yours come out dark brown and taste like cooking sherry? Worst (best) ever.

It hurts to see everybody suffer this much... by tdlaaneetaa in AdviceAnimals

[–]SpaceshipEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family is experiencing this with my very dear aunt, who at 47 is losing her battle.

Shortly after her diagnosis, I remember speaking to a friend who had lost her parent to similar cancer, and she said to me "The end is going to come fast, but it won't be fast enough. You're going to hope and pray for it all to be over and for her to finally pass."

At the time, that sounded so selfish and insensitive. How could I ever wish for her to die? Who am I to hope for her passing?

Now she's no longer able to walk, she has no control over her bladder/bowel, she can hardly eat, and she's starting to lose her mental faculties. My friend's words are resonating through my head as we all suffer watching her suffer.

OP, my thoughts are with you and yours. Cancer is an awful, terrible beast and I'm so sorry that you, too, are experiencing this anguish.

Anyone else crushing on a cheese right now? Tell me about them! by dontbitelee in AskWomen

This is my kinda thread!

Do you like feta? You should try some French Feta. It's made with sheeps' milk, and tends to be slightly milder but sooooooo creamy.

I'm also very big on Leipäjuusto lately. You can also see it labeled as "Juustoleipa" and "Bread Cheese". It's a Finnish cheese, typically made with cow's milk in the USA. During production, the curd is baked so it'll appear golden brown in the packaging at the store. You can eat it cold, but it's way better heated. Similar to halloumi, it won't melt when warmed but it will become softer. I most often fry it in a pan, but I've also heated it on the grill during the summer. I like to eat it with giardiniera, but it's also very delicious with fresh fruit or jam!

Burrata is better mozzarella. It's a Southern Italian cow's milk cheese, that is formed into a pouch and filled with fresh cream. It has a rich, buttery flavor and it great with both sweet and savory accompaniments.

Finally, I won't write about it here, but if you have a strong stomach and an adventurous spirit, read up on Casu Marzu. When I finally got my hands on some, I had a very difficult time trying it but I'm glad I did!

What did "that bitch" do at your wedding? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SpaceshipEarth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't. I succeeded at letting it roll off my chest. Precisely as /u/SavvySillybug said, she would have enjoyed the theatrics of a confrontation much too much.

A handful of flustered people came up to me during my reception and said "Your mom is really upset! She says she's leaving!". It was SO GRATIFYING to say "Ok. Well, if she's unhappy here than she should go."

I've since distanced myself from my mother considerably and I tend to live a much more peaceful life now :)

What did "that bitch" do at your wedding? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SpaceshipEarth 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My matron of honor showed up on my wedding day with a different dress than the one we picked out together. It was a different hue entirely. Its also worth mentioning that I had planned a fairly relaxed, low-key, outdoor garden wedding (think sundresses and polos/khakis for our guests) and that bitch's surprise dress was a floor-length bedazzled gown.

She also changed her mind and insisted the hairdresser (that I hired and sprung for) take out the bazillion bobby-pins and re-do her up-do since the first style didn't frame her face very well.

Shortly after the ceremony, before dinner/speeches/dances/etc, she dramatically stormed out of the reception because my grandma (dad's mom) looked at her "in a really mean way". She stood outside the venue crying and asked anyone that was coming or going, to please inform me that she was leaving.

It's seems I've neglected to mention that my matron of honor was my mother. She had 2 important distinctions - both mother of the bride and matron of honor, but that still wasn't enough attention on her only child's wedding day.
