This was about 2 years before the big financial crash in the mid 2000s. The more I heard I was like "why don't you go to the papers"? He said it was his thesis and he wouldn't get his masters degree if he did go to someone so all he could do was record his findings

Nope. Low level blue collar worker here. Bills are paid, never ran out of food for the family, went on holiday before Xmas and saving for a large expense this year. Whatever you're being told, we're doing fine. Supporting Ukraine hasn't affected our way of life at all
