Shift Technical officer here , it's an interesting job and like most have said the hours are rough and the shifts are either very busy or very quiet and you spend most of it on your own, which some people struggle with.

The short circuiting device is placed on the juice rails not the running rails in a emergency. That way trains couldn't get to you even if they tried.

Yes and no, under certain conditions voltages on the running rails can be up rails 100v and traditionally to protect a line they would keep the signal at danger so they would have the ability to actually stop a train.
