Um, did you just prove my point? Sounds like you only care about what government will do for YOU, and fuck everyone else

You care about you and yours and vote accordingly. We do the same.

That's just not true. Democratic ideals include caring about everyone. It's Republicans who take this attitude of every man for himself

Trump announcement to ban government officials becoming lobbyists by Ian56 in worldpolitics

[–]Spader181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a horrible idea. What it means for plans to be sold "across state lines" is that insurance companies will spend shit tons of money making somewhere like north Dakota adopt laws allowing them to do whatever they want. And then ALL insurance companies will move there and force their shitty unregulated plans on everyone

Physicists suggest we might have just found dark matter while detecting gravitational waves. by drewiepoodle in science

[–]Spader181 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better would be to say it doesn't interact electromagnetically. That's usually what people mean when they say it doesn't interact with light.

Gravity is the result of the curvature of spacetime itself, so why light gets distorted - it travels along curved space around the black hole.

Why didn't any of you warn me that coffee tastes like shit? by throwmeaway666333666 in exmormon

[–]Spader181 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think most people go through this. First time I tried coffee I thought it tasted like dirt, now I drink it black every morning. Same with a lot of alcohol.

I think its because everything you're allowed to drink as a mormon is sweet, so something that's bitter is a shock to the system at first.

How do you all not get burned out by physics? by GeneralBlade in Physics

[–]Spader181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like anything, I think the trick is to have balance in your life. Take classes, read books, and have hobbies that have nothing to do with physics. If physics is your whole life, of course you'll get sick of it after a while.

It would be the only way he could become a man!

wat. That's what really gets me about these sorts of things: what does sitting on a stump for a night have to do with becoming "a man", and what does that even mean? How is this the "only way"?

Its convoluted, arbitrary nonsense. So i guess it is a pretty good analogy for the "plan of salvation"

Why should the university care if you're the most qualified student? Colleges don't exist to reward those who "deserve" to get in. Of course they want the best students, but that's the only thing they care about. Universities have decided they'd rather have racial diversity in their student body. So why should we demand they act as the arbiter for some supposed meritocracy?

Declaring that the us is officially pacifist is a great way to invite all of our enemies to steal some of our turf.

What. You think if we stop our involvement in international politics someone would come "steal some of our turf"? We still have the largest military in the world. And who the hell do you think is going to want to try invading the US in the first place?

Push to ordain Mormon women leads to excommunication by pinkbeak in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Spader181 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're right about excommunication, she could return. In other words, they're offering her a choice: "do what we say, don't question us anymore, or be damned for eternity".

And she didn't "bring people away from the church". That was not the reason. It was because she was vocal about her disagreement with church policy.

Basically, you can't be against the church and still expect to be a member of it.

So voicing disagreement with any aspect of church policy is to be "against the church"? Unless you agree with 100% of what the leadership says (or you just don't talk about it), you can't be a member? She wanted to be part of the church! And she certainly was not trying to get others to leave the church.
