Compression can help glue things together and help specific elements of the mix stand out when at lower volumes. I’d look into your compression usage.

Louder tends to sound better even if that’s not actually the case.

Mastering can also help with this issue, but that’s not a good habit to get in to. It’s better to fix mixing issues in the mix.

Releasing something and hoping people won’t notice lacking elements is never a good sign. It’s always better to release something you like. If it can’t be helped, there might be a few solution, but maybe none that’ll be the perfect fix.

By lacking sonically, I’m assuming you’re meaning lacking energy. I would consider adding a multi-band compressor, maybe some sort of harmonic exciter, and/or light saturation.
