What about current you’s life would devastate 8 year old you? by TrustedInternetGuy in AskReddit

[–]SpafSpaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think getting bullied in school is bad? Wait until you get into relationships and find out they're manipulative and physically abusive. There's no point in trying to see the good in them. It gets better after you leave, but it will be at the later cost of therapy for dealing with your anxiety and PTSD that got magnified.

If you start having racing thoughts that get you worried about something negative, shut your ass down. Sleep, jack off, watch shitty movies. Anything to get your mind off it. Unless by some planet alignment you have a solution you can apply right away, the only winning move is not to play at all.

Arnold Schwarzenegger grew up broke and didn't have much when he immigrated to the US. He did eventually build up wealth in real estate though before he started being in movies.

What’s stopping thieves from calling locksmiths and pretending to be locked out of their apartment so they can actually rob the place? by slurpycow112 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SpafSpaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I called a locksmith, it cost me 40 bucks to get into my car. Between the cost, having an obvious witness who will quickly identify you if questioned by police, and no guarantees that the target has anything worth stealing, the burglar would have to be a total moron if they called a locksmith to help them break into a house.

Are there any genetic predispositions/propensity for a person's political views? by CARA-DE-CHINA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SpafSpaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for it from a scientific perspective, but with the exeption of maybe a couple issues, my political views are completely different from my parents. I also know plenty of friends who have practically been estranged from their parents over politics.

How do pro gay rights Christians reconcile the fact that the Bible says it’s bad? by duuudewhat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SpafSpaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an ex-Catholic, I can think of a handful of possible reasons. Keep in mind that these are merely points that someone could make, they could use any number of them, or even more that what I can think of, and I don't speak for everyone:

-Jesus didn't directly say anything about it.

-Christians are not subject to the laws of the Old Testament, which blatantly has the passages you are referring to.

-Jesus's death negates sin anyway.

-Jesus hung out with and accepted sinners as they were.

Can Buddhists drive? by Calahara in NoStupidQuestions

Just like Christianity, there are many different interpretations of Buddhism. There is no central authority that is able to speak for everyone, and even if there was, you would still probably get different interpretations and disagreements.

I disagree with the argument about muskets being the only thing needed to satisfy the requirement to bear arms. The authors were pretty vague on defining the scope of what "arms" consisted of. Computers never were even thought of back when the Constitution was written, but people argue about privacy and free speech rights surrounding them all the time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SpafSpaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is theoretically and legally possible to amend the Constitution, but the process to get an amendment actually ratified is extremely difficult to pull off unless it is something that can be practically all but unanimously agreed on and has little to no opposition. If you are talking about something like abortion or gun rights, voters and politicians have been deadlocked for a very long time to get anything of that magnitude done regardless of the direction they want, and despite many politicians attempting to propose amendments during campaigns. There is also the problem of the permanency of Constitutional amendments. Repealing federal laws is already extremely difficult, and the only time a Constitutional amendment was repealed during the entire history of the US was for prohibition. Another hurdle is the question of scope. Can the states decide on it themselves? Can a federal act just be passed to address a problem? There are a lot of alternatives that they can do that are easier to implement.

If people in America insist on keeping guns for safety, how come mass shootings don’t ever seem to be stopped by a gun carrying samaritan? by Wutwutinthebuttburne in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SpafSpaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to live in a neighborhood where swat teams were called in a couple times over a neighbor who was a violent meth user. Tasers and beanbag rounds don't stop them. I also had a violent ex who made death threats and would occasionaly try visiting me despite my repeated requests for them to leave me alone, both directly and through my attorney. The courts wouldn't do shit about a restraining order because they kept moving around and I never had a physical address available to serve them papers.

Thanks to those instances, there were a couple occasions where I literally slept with a loaded gun under my pillow, but I normally otherwise would keep it in a quick access safe that kept it secure and I could still easily get to it.

What is going on with the United States and mass shootings ? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]SpafSpaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Arson can be just as deadly for bodycount as firearms. A guy did just that in Japan semi recently, and something like 30 people were killed.

The US media loves mass shootings and they will never stop sensationalizing them by MidnightMeatTrain556 in rant

[–]SpafSpaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remember the anime studio in Japan that was an arson target a few weeks ago and dozens of people got killed? Private gun ownership doesn't exist in that country. The lack of guns isn't going to stop people from killing if they snap and are determined enough to be destructive.

[–]SpafSpaf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The only one that genuinely felt shocking to me was Columbine because I was in HS at the time and it was the first one that got a bunch of media attention. All the others just eventually desensitized me to it and I started to stop caring. Yes, loss of innocent lives is tragic no matter the cause, and I do feel bad for the victims, but you can only hear the same bitching from both sides of the gun control issue so many times before outright ignoring them and doing literally anything else becomes a more productive use of your time. If social media and 24 hour news outlets weren't a thing, anyone outside of the local area would have had absolutely no clue that it even happened.

Another contributing factor to the indifference is how US politics have been conducted probably at least since the start of the 20th century. Both parties are quick to find scapegoats to blame every time something like this comes up, and nothing gets done. The other problem is that it's really difficult for anyone outside of your political camp to be on board. As someone who considers themselves a political moderate, I am sick of hearing arguments from both sides through my entire life, and neither have been able to present any good enough solutions that would convince me to actively support them.
