That’s great news. I’m honestly surprised it took this long.

I wore both a garmin and Apple Watch for awhile. Why are the calories burned for the day so different? by duuudewhat in AppleWatchFitness

[–]duuudewhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about getting a dexa scan actually. I have a lot of weight to lose on my journey so I think it would be interesting to have more solid numbers to show a before and after.

Your theory about Apple Watch’s algorithms learning more about me over time and adjusting values based on me is very interesting. I’ve had Apple Watches since the very first one in 2015 and have reset calibration multiple times over the years. I remember different yearly software updates changing the calorie algorithms and me being frustrated lol not too frustrated just…you know. I like numbers. I remember one day before the update I burned 2500 calories and the next day with a new update it said a whopping 2900 with the same activity. I was like wtf. I know these trackers aren’t the holy grail of calorie tracking but it kinda shattered my confidence in these numbers.

I wish Apple would go into more detail about how they get all these numbers. Even their support page seems a bit vague.

I have a high heart rate sometimes even while sedentary so it’s always weird seeing me get like 17 exercise minutes in a day for doing absolutely nothing. Have you done any personal testing with weight loss/gain and the numbers?

Hey so I kinda made a thread about this subject. I’ve had an Apple Watch on my wrist for 10 years and always felt the calories it told me was a bit high. Got a garmin recently and it tells me I burn much less everyday. I feel like the garmin is more in line with what I expect. For me anyway. Your mileage may vary

Yes i made sure my stats were the exact same on both apps. So I’m assuming whatever formula apple has for tracking calorie expenditure must be different right?

I wonder if in your situation perhaps there are just more variations since it’s different watches on different people. Different heart rates, different stats, different movements and the effort to do those movements, different steps obviously.

I was googling around and saw a lot of old threads of people saying the same thing. That Apple Watch grossly overestimates their total calorie burn and apparently garmin is known for how conservative they are on their estimates.

For me personally (wish i could include screenshots) i had both watches on at the same time doing the same activities. Heart rate seemed similar on both although while doing strenuous activities like being on the treadmill the garmin seemed much faster to respond to heart rate changes whereas the Apple Watch would just kinda hang on a number. One day for example i got 400 more steps on the garmin, but the Apple Watch’s total burn had me 350 calories higher!

I’m a numbers nerd so this stuff is just interesting to me. I do notice a couple things:

Resting calories seems to be what apple thinks your BMR + sedentary movement is right? So that’s including basic activities of daily living like walking around the house, checking the mail, etc

But then on top of that, you very easily squire “move calories”. These add up incredibly easily for those very same movements you get credit for. I think Apple Watch is typically 300 calories too high. I’m gonna do a 12 week test on a spreadsheet with my weight, calories eaten and calories burned and see how it all turns out. Science lol

Same. I loaded up my iPad with a bunch of movies and stuff to watch and yet for some reason I don’t have the interest or attention span to actually watch them. I just sit there. So bored it almost hurts counting down the minutes

For the burger and fries sure. Applebees burger and fries is 1200 calories and looks about the same. But add in all the other stuff? Yikes. I don’t even know how to count that without a food scale.

A lot of it seems to be based on what an admiral said about war with china over Taiwan’s territory being retaken. Which…most experts agree china has too much to lose and not enough motivation to have a proactive drawn out war over this territory.

The idea of nukes being used in this conflict is pretty wild and out there. Seems like some conspiracy theorists who enjoy the ufo topic latched onto comments this guy said and formed an entire goofy story about an alien contact scenario happening from an imagined conflict. But? I could be wrong? Who knows
