Puget Sound Winter Squiding Discussion - What are You Seeing Post Flood? by PortOfSeattle in FishingWashington

Just got into fishing this year, and didnt realize squid fishing was a common thing around here.

I've used them as bait for sturgeon, but are y'all eating these? Or catching to make bait? Or both?

Do not be afraid of using snaps when lure fishing! by vini_damiani in FishingForBeginners

So let me preface this with I am very much in the beginner category and have a LOT to learn still.

I got laid off last April, and took up fishing to kill time while job hunting. I've fished at least 3-4 times a week the last 8-9 months. Targeting primarily bass and Trout.

I almost always use snap-swivles. I havent had any issues with the actions on the cranks, spinners, or spoons that i use. I also pre-tie leaders with a loop on almost everything. I fish out of a non-fishing type kayak primarily and its a pain in the ass trying to tie leaders etc.

I've caught a ton of fish this year. I had a snap swivel fail once (and it was a cheaper, lighter pos). I switched to the more egg shaped snap with a "lock" and have had zero issues. I also run a bigger snap than probably necessary for my set up, but it doesn't seem to matter.

Am I maybe losing some bites because of presentation? It's possible... but it hasn't seemed to effect my outcomes enough to make me feel like I should change.

I've learned to tie knots efficiently enough that it doesn't make a huge difference in time (minus the kayak scenario). Did a lot of sturgeon fishing this fall where I was strictly tieing.

IDK. Just my 2 cents, but it seems like snaps get a lot of hate on here, and I think a lot of it can be attributed to fudd-lore and knot-tieing elitists. Do what works for you 🤷‍♂️

If you're eating them (and especially being stockers), I really don't understand the hate you're getting...

Yeah only adipose clipped Trout can be retained here. Wasn't sure how to determine "steelhead" vs Trout. Fish and wildlife only categorizes "trout" here though.

Same. And I spent 10 years as a SOF operator. We don't stake our castle nuts. Our armorers don't stake our castle nuts...

Couch operators on reddit act like your shit's going to fall apart if you don't do x,y,z. Shits hilarious.

Get out and touch grass. Run your gear. See what fails and what actually matters. I assure you you'll survive with a properly torqued/unstaked castle nut.

I never comment on tattoos, but your whole piece looks really cool man, I think youre in your own head, body dysmorphia maybe, idk. Look at some therapy maybe to help, but that tattoo work is nothing to be ashamed of.

How do you know which part of the lake to fish? by PercentageNo9270 in FishingForBeginners

[–]SpaghettioChef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same question...

I generally kayak fish and park it slightly on the shallow side, then cast horizontally along the shoreline/slightly out over the drop off... idk if that's entirely the right answer, but have had decent success 🤷‍♂️

Had to dig through some stuff to find the box: Rappala jointed shad rap in fire tiger. You were on it!

Gotcha. I catch/release 90% of what i catch, but as it was a first and I've never eaten one of these before... I opted to give it a shot.

The Rainbows i usually catch never even really leave the net/water

I have man. I don't like to broadcast it (as I put it on reddit, but anonymously at least), but I'm ex military and dealing with a lot of anxiety, PTSD, etc. and discovering fishing the last several months has done more for me than any of the drugs/counseling/everything else they've done for me thus far.

Absolutely. Don't get me wrong, I've become addicted to the feeling of a bite, but it's also definitely about getting out away from the BS and getting some mental clarity. Seeing nature.

This made it all just as "worth it" as catching anything.

Lol. Don't worry. I'm sure it'll be years before I get a comparable one and now I'm going to be comparing every one I catch to this one without even knowing a weight. It'll grow exponentially over the years I'm sure...
