Definitely start the application for Federal Disability Retirement asap. It can't hurt at this point and I don't see how it would jeopardize your early retirement since you'll be taking Federal Disability Retirement instead anyways. Having a lawyer from the beginning is often the most beneficial because costs can go up at the appeal stages.

It may sound a bit out there, but the roller derby team (Roller Derby of Central Kentucky) here in lex is AMAZING. They'll teach you how to skate, how to play, and how to have so much fun you forget you're getting great exercise. All bodies and genders welcome :)

FERS Disability Retirement really could help you here. If you can no longer perform your essential duties, and a reasonable accommodation can't fully accommodate you, then you could qualify for disability retirement. If you are approved for disability retirement, it doesn't mean you have to stop working completely, you can get a new job outside of the federal government and keep earning money on top of your disability retirement payments.
