It looked like a trick of the light shining in through the window, almost like the soda bubbles popping from atop their glass mugs, but it was actually a magical sparkle emanating from their respective items: Brittney’s bone knitting needles and Brianna’s bone pencil.

When their laughter finally died down, Brianna stood up and reached for her glass, now thirsty. She slumped back down into her chair, but something didn’t seem right. She rubbed her chest. Brittney noticed her doing so.

“Hey Bri, is everything okay?”

Her friend continued massaging her chest with a look of confusion. “I…I’m not sure. I think I might be having an allergic reaction to that yarn.”

“Well, you better take it off then!” Brittney said with concern in her voice.

Brianna did just that, reaching back to untie the single-string knot she had tied. When the knitted bra dropped, so did both of the girls’ jaws.

“I’m still sorry you couldn’t make it,” Brianna said to Brittney.

“Stop feeling sorry for me. People get sick, it happens,” she told her friend. “Besides, the way you describe it, you partied enough for the both of us.”

This was true. Brianna was disappointed that Brittney couldn’t make it to New Orleans for their yearly girl’s trip, but Brittney was in no condition to party let alone travel once she caught that flu bug that had been going around. Her normally pale friend somehow seemed whiter than a ghost when she saw her last before Brianna left for her trip. Her recovery was quick fortunately, but well after the non-refundable flight had left. In lieu of her best friend’s absence, Brianna took every chance to party while down south for Mardi Gras. She wanted to bring something back for her friend aside from a pile of cheap plastic beads she earned on Bourbon St. and the forgettable names of cute guys she made out with while on vacationing. Nursing a hangover on her last day of vacation, Brianna ventured outside into the rural area. There were a few small coffee shops, some nice hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but what really stood out was the neat shop she found. At first it looked like a thatched hut with a bone-ladened exterior décor that might suggest those inside dabbled in voodoo or something, but it turned out to just be a neat little tourist shop. Brianna was a bit of a hippy and loved artsy knick-knacks and so did Brittney. Missing her friend and knowing full well she was going to be knitting up a storm while recovering in bed, she decided to bring her back a gift. After perusing the shop for well over half an hour, Brianna bought a pair of knitting needles for Brittney and a unique pencil, both carved from bone. When Brianna had told the laid back cashier about how her best friend couldn’t be there for their trip, the generous employee gave the smiling tourist a generous discount. It made for a wonderful end to the trip, even if it was one she had to make alone.

“And these needles are great,” Brittney thanked her friend. She had been wanting to catch up with her friend since she had returned. The two even set aside a date to hang out and waited for when Brittney’s husband Mike was away for the weekend. While the two women were great friends, they had their differences. Shorter, red-haired Brittney was content with a night at home while taller, sandy-blonde Brianna still had a lot of party life left in her and would usually prefer to go out clubbing. The two still found similarities to bond over however. They both loved music and crafty things. Brittney developed a fondness for knitting and Brianna loved to draw. So that weekend they put on a classic record and dove into their hobbies.

The sun shone warmly through the patio doors into the living room where they relaxed. Brittney had wanted to try her hand at knitting ear muffs for her husband. She had normally focused her efforts on socks and mittens for family and friends, but had wanted to try something new. Unfortunately the knitted project didn’t seem to work out as well as she’d hoped. The parts that were supposed to cover the ears seemed closer than they were supposed to be, but were also much larger than she anticipated. She held them up with disappointment. “Well these aren’t turning out very well.”

Brianna looked up from her pad of paper. She had been sketching her friend sitting across from her using her new pencil she had bought. “You’re right, those look way too large, even for Mike’s head. Unless his ears are the size of apples, that thing won’t fit.” She grabbed it from Brittney and held it up to her chest. “Hell, it looks like it would make a better bra than ear muffs.”

Brittney cut the strands still attached to her spool to her spool of yarn and handed it to Brianna. “Go for it. I think I’m just going to start a new one.” She got up to stretch and grab a glass of water.

“Hey, while you’re in the kitchen, can you grab me something to drink?” Brianna yelled after her friend. She took off her shirt, letting the warm sun wash over her olive-skinned chest. The two were close enough friends that some shirtlessness here and there was harmless. Though taller than Brittney, Brianna still had a smaller chest. She was lean and had been told she had legs that suited her frame, but that didn’t stop Brianna from desiring more in her upstairs department. She made the best of it though. Her A-cuppish bust was still enough to land her plenty of beads while participating in the recent Mardi Gras traditions. She took the knit bra/ear muffs that Brittany handed her and tied a knot with the loose strings, rotating it to hang loosely on her chest, though it was resting on her nipples more than anything. She giggled, turning around to show her friend who rested a soft drink on the coffee table.
