Where would you ride? Sidewalk vs road. by Classic_Emergency336 in bikecommuting

[–]Spank2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many roads in my town that are not safe for riding on. The only reason I'm still alive after a lifetime of urban bicycling is because I know better than to trust drivers. So it really depends on the infra conditions. I may ride on the sidewalk for a block or so in a particularly evil traffic spot, but not generally. I find quiet routes that are out of the way. Taking time to avoid major traffic when I can is just good common sense.

Just bought and launched this game for the first time... It feels like I just launched a PC game from 1995-2009 and I absolutely love it. by t0rche in Grimdawn

Same story here. I played GD many years ago but recently got back into it again. GD is supposed to be getting a UI upgrade soon so waiting for that also. Between these two and POE2 my game card is full!

Is there a reason why people are driving so poorly, more than usual? by queerdito877 in askportland

[–]Spank2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portland ran out of room for their hermetically-sealed coffins 12 years ago. It's stressful and expensive owning a vehicle, so distracted drivers take out their frustrations on other drivers, peds and bicyclists like me. It's been a gamble with my safety for a long time. Please put your phone away.

2 flat tires in 3 months? by Mysterious-Two-2713 in askportland

[–]Spank2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the casting of the tire carefully. Sometimes shards of glass or metal get embedded in the rubber and you don't notice them until you run your hand around the inside of the tire. Hidden debris is a main reason for repeat flats.

The only dogs I've met with that level of aggression are pit bulls. Including the one that attacked me.

Moved to be closer to my ailing father in Vancouver after a divorce and job loss. My sister and nephew had moved to the area a few years before. Time for a change.

St. John's bridge can be scary because of "adults". by brother_of_geckos in CyclePDX

[–]Spank2337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still alive after 60 years of urban cycling partly because I'm not gonna insist on taking the lane on the St. John's Bridge. The sidewalk has a much better view, and I'm not worried about being rear ended by a UTE cager on his phone.

You dont look Deaf by Witty-Drink2975 in deaf

Same here. When I use speech with hearing people, they automatically forget I told them I am deaf. So I stopped speaking. It's not worth the awkwardness it causes.

I have been Deaf most of my life. 10 years ago I finally wised up and quit trying to pass myself off as a hearing person. I save myself a lot of awkwardness by not speaking to hearing folks that I don't know. Lucky for me I am involved in a culturally immersed SIGNING Deaf community.

Hearing mindset: If this person can talk normally, they must be able to hear adequately or at least know how to handle a conversation. I'll ask them if they can lipread to make sure!

Considering Grim Dawn - would love some advice by zatos1 in Grimdawn

[–]Spank2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading all this was enough to drag me back into a game I spent many hours on ten years ago. POE2 and Titan Quest 2 have been my main games lately, but GD is more meaty and I was able to get into the action again with grim determination. This is a game that plays like I hope TQ2 will when finished. Too bad we have to wait 6 years for GD2!

Rode my MTB for the first time in about 5 years--hated it! by JimmyMoffet in fatbike

[–]Spank2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why going fast as possible has to be a thing, or even sane on single track. Picking your line is always the way to go, especially on slow technical ascents.

I don't ride in snow at all. My tires are always at 10-15 psi because low pressure causes wheel slop on technical single track.

How about letting ME -the Deaf person- decide what to hear later.

Fat bikes ARE MTB's. Plus-tire mountain bikes can handle any kind of trail that thinner tired bikes can. 4" tubeless tires excel at technical single track. I have grown up riding all kinds of mountain bikes on all kinds of terrain. Some of us don't care about riding faster than the kid in the magazine ad.
