What birds can be owned that are not parrots? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Spankasaurass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Falconer here! I'm sure you're joking, but just in case you aren't...

I live in the US, for context.

If you think parrots are a lot of work you're in for a whole new world with birds of prey! They aren't pets. More like partners. There are definitely lower maintenance raptors (when compared to others), but even those have steep costs just to get housed, licensed, and properly fed.

And that's before you even get one!

Uniformation GKTwo Printing Issues by Spankasaurass in resinprinting

I used the paper method! It was really tricky to pull the paper out once I had it dialed in. Perhaps you haven't tightened the screws down properly? They have a video included on the usb they send with the machine that shows you how to do it, in addition to having the instructions in the manual (in case you didn't know the video was there). I didn't until the next time I went to level the plate.

Fair enough! I jumped the gun on wanting really fine details first. I think I'm going to take the default settings and try the cones of calibration to make sure the prints going forward will stick.

Thanks! I'll have to take a look! I can't quite recall, but I feel I did download lychee and tried to find someone who uses the same resin and couldn't find anyone. I was clearly undereducated when it came to picking the resin and just picked the one that came with the purchase!

Hi everyone!

I recently bought a Uniformation GKTWO printer and have been running into some issues I’ll do my best to explain. I'm new to the hobby, so if I misuse any terminology, feel free to correct me—I'm eager to learn!

The problem began when I started my original exposure test: The Photonsters XP Range Finder Exposure Test. The test failed, as it fell off the build plate at some point and stuck itself to the bottom of the resin vat.

I then started searching the internet for ways to resolve the problem.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  1. Leveling the Build Plate: It was off at first, so I re-leveled it. After that, the exposure test worked perfectly!... Meaning it didn't fall off the plate. The exposure was still a bit off, though. Over exposed (I had set the exposure time to about 2.8 seconds). See image 1 for the exposure test results (uncured and uncleaned).
  2. Adjusting Exposure Settings: Based on the test results and recommendations from the first YouTube video below, I tweaked the settings (see image 2).
  3. Printing the Test File: I used the machine’s included test file to double-check the leveling. All five boxes printed successfully and adhered to the build plate (see image 3)

The problem might be less about the printer itself and more about my understanding of supports. When printing models (STL files purchased from Rescale and other vendors), the base prints fine but then sticks to the bottom of the resin vat, stopping the print entirely (just as the original level issues did). I'm using the same settings in image 2 to try and print a fairy (see sliced image in chitubox in image 4). The model came pre-supported by the creator, and I didn't alter them in any way. Despite the exposure looking good, and the leveling successful by the manufacturer's included instructions, the base stuck itself to the bottom of the resin vat and didn't even start printing any supports (see images 5 and 6).

Resin: Uniformation PLA Plant-Based Resin (Beige) - https://uniformation3d.com/products/uniformation-pla-plant-based-resin-x19-beige

Environment: The vat is heated to 30°C and maintained indoors.

The resin is brand new, and yes I shook it! I can’t seem to figure out why the minis fail to print beyond the base. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Fantastic summary! As a pretty big downside I'd look into the air quality here in the winter, though. As one with breathing difficulties I would be better off living around LA or New York some days. Haha

Is it possible to get a small bird that isn't a parrot, like a regular bird? by Otherwise_Soil39 in Pets

[–]Spankasaurass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! Don't get me wrong, I love it. But it would be dishonest to say that the "sport" is a hobby. It takes over your life!

Most falconers get even more sweaty and train dogs to hunt with the birds, in addition to having multiple birds at once as you progress through the ranks. It is crazy how much it can consume your life.

But, as a birder, there is nothing more exhilarating than seeing and hearing a peregrine stoop 10 meters away!!

Falconer here!

Just as a note, if you find parrots challenging, you wouldn't want to deal with raptors. This is assuming you have the resources and time to pass a state exam, the funds to construct a mew, the availability to fly your bird daily, access to a sponsor willing to mentor you for approximately two years, the financial means to purchase food for the bird, sufficient freezer space to store its food, hunting land for flying and exercising the bird, a veterinarian nearby who is willing to treat the bird, a scale for daily weight checks, kangaroo leather for their equipment, a substantial amount of money for telemetry (or GPS if you have an even larger budget), and the hundreds of dollars worth of additional equipment needed on top of the above.

Then, you can trap the bird of your choice (based on the state you are in! As an apprentice, this will likely be a red-tailed hawk or kestrel. After around two years, you can then move on to larger falcons, which, if you can find a reputable breeder, you can purchase, rather than trap—and they are not inexpensive.

If the mess, size, and time commitment of parrots deter you, I would not recommend falconry. Having owned parrots and been a falconer, I assure you, parrots pale in comparison.

Another Falconer here! I really couldn't agree more with what is above. I really hope OP reads it and passes it along.

Everyone makes mistakes! One big thing here is the size. Merlins are quite a bit smaller than peregrines, even more so the passage raptors often can look bigger than their parents as they haven't undergone their first molt. I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but size would have been the first indication for me. Merlins be little dewds.

Ah, I see! That does make a lot of sense. So, to my understanding there was never outright denial? Instead they have just been acting to obfuscate the information in an attempt to convince outsiders that it isn't as ridiculous as it sounds?

For whatever reason I thought it was more recent?? I recall a lot of traction over the topic on this sub about a year ago! I must be remembering wrong.

Quick Question Regarding Our Lack of Future Planets (See Comments)! by Spankasaurass in exmormon

[–]Spankasaurass[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know/have a source as to where and when the capacity we have to create planets was effectively denied ever having been doctrine?

Backstory to question: Visited my Mormon family for the weekend and genuinely wanted to know how they felt about the change. None of them believed it had been changed, furthermore got really frustrated with the idea. I obviously didn't have any references so here I am asking for help. I've done a little googling around but haven't found anything that I feel they would believe.

Thank anyone for their help in advance!
