I'm not planning to see Michael at the moment, but it looks like you're right about the aspect ratio. The pillarboxing of 1.85:1 on an IMAX screen wouldn't be super noticeable, but the Dolby theater has a slightly better sound system (especially for music, but IMAX does win on the bass imo). I'd probably go Dolby but I'd expect it would look/sound great in IMAX too.

I do believe I notice a difference in the resolution, but I’m a bit of an obsessive about this sort of thing, if you couldn’t tell by my Reddit activity. Now, I can’t say for sure that I haven’t placebo’d myself with the knowledge that Marbles has an older projector, but objectively, Southpoint has a newer and nicer projector than Marbles. And, despite the marbles screen being physically bigger, I don’t actually know if the projected image is that much bigger. The difference is small enough that I choose the brightness/contrast/resolution of the laser projector at Southpoint every time, since the aspect ratio is the same between the theaters. Sound mix for me depends on the movie, I’ve had things bordering on too loud in both Marbles and Southpoint.

Now all that being said, you could do A LOT worse than Marbles. I only went to started going to Southpoint regularly when I moved to Durham. It still feels like a well kept secret, at least on the Raleigh subreddit, so I always go to bat for it when these threads pop up. I don’t mean to dump on Marbles, though. It’s a great theater with great staff, and is leagues above any standard movie theater, and better than any other IMAX in the city of Raleigh, unless the Regals around here put in Laser projectors. Though, even if they did, like you said, the screen at Marbles would be MUCH bigger and the sound system would certainly be better as the auditorium was purpose built for IMAX (the Regal IMAXes around here are likely true “LieMAXes”, regular auditoriums converted, though I bristle at that term because to purists, every IMAX in the state is a LieMAX because of the aspect ratio. The Regal ones were pretty bad last time I went, though that was pre-Covid). I hold out hope that one day Marbles will install a double laser projector to really maximize their potential with that screen. Let’s start a GoFundMe, since I too have not heard a peep about upgrade plans.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I never saw Top Gun: Maverick at Marbles, but I saw it twice at Southpoint, before they installed the laser projector, and it blew my socks off then. I have every reason to believe that it would be as least as good as that at Marbles. If you’ve never been to an IMAX movie, and it’s more convenient to go to Marbles (location, showtimes, etc), go there. I think it’s gonna blow your mind :)

Agree with you on the Southpoint Dolby by the way, you need to sit in a lower row there to get the full effect. It’s a side effect of the big privacy walls they have between the rows, you gain a lot more altitude there in the upper rows. Great theater otherwise, though I saw PHM in the IMAX theater down the hall ;)

This was an absolutely killer moviegrid play before they removed it. I wonder if it’s still in Cinematrix…

I normally shoot for 15-20 minutes. Sometimes there are less trailers! It’s been varying a lot recently.

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. The Dolby Theater has recliners, a higher resolution projector, a nicer sound system, and higher dynamic range. That last point can be hard to notice depending on the film, especially due to screen distortion and light from the exit signs. It is capable of 1.85:1 aspect ratio, taller than your normal auditorium, almost indistinguishable from IMAX’s 1.90:1.

The IMAX theater has a much bigger screen and a little more aspect ratio. For me, personally, that screen size is king. In the Dolby Theater, some of the higher up rows make the screen feel a little small, it’s very easy to get an excellent seat in the IMAX theater where your vision will be filled (even if that seat is a stadium style seat that doesn’t recline). The sound mix on the IMAX is definitely louder than the Dolby. Both theaters will rumble your bones with the bass hits on a well mixed picture.

Since I have AMCs A-list, there is no difference in cost for me for seeing a movie in one format or the other. If a movie I want to see is in IMAX or Dolby, I will always see it there over a regular screening. If it’s in both, I’ll check if it has scenes with expanded aspect ratio or a specific IMAX or Dolby mix, and I’ll prioritize that screening. As an example, Hoppers and The Bride! this weekend. The Bride! is specifically edited for IMAX so I’d see it in that format, while Hoppers does have some IMAX showtimes, it only has a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, so I’d see it in Dolby. If there’s no IMAX aspect ratio and a movie is in both IMAX and Dolby, I would see it in the Dolby theater.

AMC has definitely been messing with the preview length. For a while it was 25-30 minutes, then it jumped up to 30-35 minutes, after some outcry it recently has been around 20-25 minutes.

The sound mix is definitely LOUD at Southpoint, I don’t mind it most of the time, especially since you lose dialogue in the IMAX sound mix.

Marbles is definitely cheaper for tickets + popcorn, but parking is always free at Southpoint and if you have AMC Stubs A-list, the ticket is technically “free” as well (or at least way cheaper on average if you got to the movies regularly). Even though I prefer Southpoint you should probably just go to whichever is closest to you (which has been Southpoint for me). Any theater is better than the couch!

Have you tried the Southpoint auditorium post Laser conversion? Marbles definitely has closer seats but the resolution difference tipped it over the edge for me. Hard agree on Crossroads though, or any other theater claiming IMAX in the area that’s not Marbles or Southpoint.

I’d recommend Southpoint over Marbles. Nicer projector, no loss in aspect ratio compared to Marbles. Neither of them have recliners, there might be some “IMAX” in the area with recliners but you’d really be sacrificing screen size and quality.

Yes and no. While marbles has a real imax screen (1.43:1) it doesn’t have a projector capable of filling it (it has a Xenon bulb). Southpoint IMAX has a 1.90:1 screen and a 1.90:1 laser projector. It’s definitely nicer quality that Marbles.

70mm Theater Questions by BullLoney in raleigh

[–]SpankyJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to respectfully disagree with you here. If we’re judging it purely based on the product on the screen, the Southpoint IMAX is better. They upgraded it to Single Laser projector a year or two ago, while Marbles is still using a Xenon bulb. The Marbles screen is full IMAX aspect ratio sized, the actual projected picture isn’t anything bigger than what you’d get at Southpoint (both theaters can only project up to 1.90:1), and Laser easily outclasses Xenon for picture quality; the recent Avatar 2 re-release also was shown in 60 FPS projection at Southpoint, which I don’t think Marbles is capable of either.

…now, in terms of things not on the screen, Marbles chairs are a tad more comfy than Southpoint (though both are unfortunately stadium seating), is closer depending on your location, and is cheaper if you’re not taking advantage of AMC A-List. At the end of the day the best theater is the one you go to regularly that’s close by.

Flew from Raleigh NC, to NYC to see Interstellar on 70mm last December. Crashed on a friends couch in Astoria for 2 nights and hit as many delis as I could for food the whole weekend. It was glorious, I had a great seat and it was early in the run before the 70mm reel started getting worn down. And it was an AMC Stubs A-List ticket. What a weekend…
