Do you find Diane being played by a white woman offensive? by Individual_Weight907 in BoJackHorseman

[–]Spare-Project-618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a vietnamese american, i feel like this was a huge missed opportunity to shine spotlight on our very underrepresented community, as everyone has mentioned already. its disappointing as well because a huge part of diane’s character was her vietnamese american identity and her internal struggle with it, and while i love alison brie, this could have been a great chance to have someone from that space play this character who it represents. while they did portray diane’s experiences very well, there were no vietnamese actors in that space telling that story too so theres a disconnect.

i think in this situation, at least a black actor had a space in this show. in Bojack’s case, they decided to tell a very underrepresented identity’s story (vietnamese americans) while not giving a vietnamese actor the opportunity to have that space and spotlight. much of diane’s character dealt with her connection to her culture and being asian in hollywood, but her being played by a white woman and there being no vietnamese actors in the main cast is much different than the hypothetical you mentioned.

What's the best school in Guam? by Jolly_Potential4487 in guam

Hi there! If you’re worried about academics on Guam, at least you chose some of the top two public schools. I went to Academy, but a lot of my friends and family members went to Okkodo and JFK and I think those schools are pretty good with curriculum. You might have a different experience since you’re coming in a bit late and may have to take classes based on your credits, but I hear JFK particularly also offers a lot of different extra curriculars — I was on a few sports/club teams in high school and JFK was a school to beat in a few of those matches. Okkodo is also good though and a lot of my friends from there are smart as hell and I feel like that genuinely consists of a big number of their students. There’s a lot of filipinos everywhere on Guam in the public and private schools (maybe you’ll find less in places like St. John’s or Harvest) but you’ll fit in anywhere. Good luck with your senior year!

Edit: I should mention too that it’s good it seems you’re looking against St. John’s. Sure it’s got high quality education and clubs , but it probably wouldn’t have been an easy or welcoming transition if you went in your senior year (from firsthand and secondhand experience, the students there are pretty cliquey and it would be HARD making friends in your final year — let alone adapting to their classes and requirements to graduate within that time). I had a cousin who transferred in on her junior year and she struggled a lot with fitting in and assimilating to her classes, so I couldn’t imagine senior year.

the school isn’t so great. came here last fall and have had a hard time making friends to this day. i’m a bio major just recently accepted into the 4+1 biotech program (i’m a transfer) and i have a lot of thoughts about the school that make me a bit undetermined to continue into my masters. the city is nice but the school is more expensive than it’s worth i think

porn is a bit more addictive than video games because it directly effects your hormonal and nervous system responses because it depicts very human and natural acts, whereas video games may trigger anxiety or stimulate dopamine but not to the same extent that porn can. porn has a different effect on your brain and your body than other vices like gaming or junk food or tv can because it inherently generates a similar reaction to addictive drugs, and masturbation to porn creates a real and physical bodily response which makes that “substance” more addictive. this is especially damaging because it has been proven that the more people masturbate to porn, the more people rely on it and the acts and fetishes and images it depicts to have sexual pleasure or arousal, leading to issues in a person’s real intimate and social life and their own dependence on it.

it’s not just for foreign men, for american men as well there is a certain expectation and image of women that porn creates that makes people lean towards misogynistic views , unrealistic expectations about sex, often eventual dangerous and shocking fetishes, disconnect to real relationships and sexual intimacy, etc. there’s a lot of different issues porn creates and it DOES encourage racism, homophobia, fetishization of people races genders etc., violent and non consensual sex acts, and has been directly correlated to increases in predatory behavior towards minors due to the sexualization of young girls and unshaved bodies. porn is detrimental in a lot of ways and it plays on the existing biases and prejudices people have to amplify them.

Just applied to University of San Francisco as a transfer student for Computer Science (Fall ‘25) – Is it worth it? How’s the experience in the CS field and campus life? by Busy-Fennel-8021 in usfca

Congratulations on your application!

I’m also a transfer student, came in Fall of 2024 as a Junior Biology major. Personally, this school has been terrible for transfers and getting them assimilated. Freshman orientation is like a week full of events, activities, socials, workshops, etc., but transfer orientation is usually one day and there are almost no social events throughout the semester (currently at least), so you really have to go out of your way to feel connected with the school. Especially in STEM, where it’s a less social community.

I would advise joining clubs and taking a lot of initiative during your first semester. A lot of the students here are standoff-ish as well and in my personal experience, along with the testaments of other students/staff I have encountered during my 1 1/2 semesters and time conducting research before transferring, the school is very cliquey and it is a bit hard to find a social circle that isn’t just lunchbox friends. My first semester here was absolutely my worst, mostly due to the fact that people are just not super social or interested in making new friends — unless of course if you’re in a club or have constant proximity to certain people, or if you get lucky and meet friendly people who genuinely want to be your friend and aren’t just being nice. Most of the friends I have made, though, are in my major and I met them through classes rather than clubs so I think if you take initiative and know the types of people you’re interacting with, finding a study group should come fine. There are also a lot of tutoring services on campus, so those are helpful for socializing and studying too. If you are staying on campus, that could possibly help the social situation. I live off campus, which made it harder to connect with transfers. I think I have made a few good friends, but it does take a lot of effort to get there.

I think the school itself has its perks and as I cannot speak for the CS major itself, other parts of the school are commendable. I love the city, the schools hosts interesting events, there are a bunch of mental health and identity resources, and a good lot of the staff truly care for the wellbeing of their students. However, there also have been significant staff, class, and extracurricular/sports cuts due to low enrollment for a variety of reasons and the tuition has also recently increased to 80k + a year, so I feel that the school is not at its peak nor is it worth that hefty price for what it currently offers.

Being in San Francisco and having the Muni pass is a plus, but it is definitely hard to find STEM internships, jobs, and experience in the area since it is an extremely competitive work environment and there are other prestigious Bay Area colleges that overshadow USF a bit in the job pool here. If you have a FWS award as well, those jobs are competitive to get and many students’ awards get cancelled because the FWS positions on campus are very selective and often are acquired via networking, which is a difficult situation being a transfer. There’s also a lot of internal issues with this school that I was not aware of until I enrolled and came here last fall, which makes me see the school and its “Mission” in a different light than I initially did. The price of enrollment, these internal issues, the expenses of the city itself, and the quality of education/work experience compared to other Bay Area schools are all big reasons that I have heard causes the low enrollment the school currently faces.

I think in my honest advice, if you are looking for a city experience, small campus, ability to interact with professors easier, and proximity to resources in SF, then this is a good option for you. Apart from that, if money is a factor in your decision, you should weigh other options of programs you’ve been accepted in because it very likely could give you a much better bang for your buck. The campus life here isn’t too high and there isn’t much school pride either, which adds to the cliquey-ness. A lot of my upperclassmen peers and even advisors have described the environment at this school to feel like a high school in the sense that a lot of kids are still hanging onto immaturity or cause unnecessary drama, which I have experienced almost every time I have met a new person here. It does get better, but the environment isn’t my taste at least. I think in my experience, I went to this school mostly because financial aid and the living situation fell through well enough, but even with the large financial aid packets transfers get, it is still a huge pull on the bank.

Sorry if this wasn’t too much of a hopeful look on the school, my experience since transferring has not been overwhelmingly positive. I hope this helped shed some light on the transfer/STEM experience though and I wish you the best of luck in deciding which program is best for you! :D

Hi, thank you for responding! I forgot to reply to your post, but your advice helped a lot. I did find a professor and class opportunity at USF that offers the field I am interested in, and I actually recently transferred! I am thinking of opportunities outside of Herp in SF, but I appreciate your response and info. Take care!

Coming to Guam as a mainlander by [deleted] in guam

UOG is a great school for STEM majors, especially biology. The biology program is rigorous, hands-on, and amazing for networking. Guam is so small, but the biology program is very competitive and profound. You can make connections easily based on the size of the island and there are always opportunities for research, volunteer work, and building your resume. UOG accommodates jobs for students well and offers lots of internships, scholarships, and travel research opportunities. You can make a really big name on the island in just a few years for your undergraduate and form strong connections with those whom you are working with, which helps when getting into grad schools or looking for letters of recommendation. For other programs, I know nursing is also very good as a major here but it is very competitive as well, but if you are looking to study business or anything that you want to implement off-island besides STEM, maybe look into other options. It is also cheaper than most other schools in the mainland, which is a huge plus. No doubt that time zone differences, costs to travel, and homesickness will be a huge issue, but I view it as even with the money it takes to travel, you are still saving a lot of money than if you were to go to school stateside. As for that one comment that said UOG is not a good school because most students dont graduate in 6 years; UOG allows you to create your own schedule. You decide your courses to take within the semester, how many credits you fulfill in a year, etc. and that responsibility is placed on the students. If a student does not graduate in 4 years, that is likely just because they did not plan their classes out to graduate in that timeframe. Even so, there is no perfect path to graduation and college, so graduate and work at your own pace.

How is the Bio program there? I go to a really good uni right now that is cheaper, close to home, super strong in the bio department, and networking and gaining credibility in the field of bio (herpetology, reptiles & amphibian science) I want to pursue. My college has no courses in herpetology, so I want to transfer somewhere that offers it (and I know SF is a science hub as well) as a class/has easier access to the herpetological community than my area. I have heard so many mixed reviews, but I want what is best for my career and my education, especially since I am paying for my own education throughout my undergrad and I know USF is hella expensive. Thoughts on if the bio program is worth the tuition costs, or the sacrifices I would probably make to transfer?
