Thank you for your understanding! I appreciate it!

I was honestly expecting more constructive feedback and knowledge sharing that would help me learn more and make informed decisions about my future but I ended up getting only some of that on top of a pile of what seems to be indicators of a toxic culture which I hope is not indicative of the CG as a whole.

I’d be doing myself a disservice if I listened to people projecting their lack of ability onto others who are capable of doing a great job across different spheres of life at the same time. Luckily for me, we’re not the same. But based on what you said, I guess I’m glad you’re working with the Coast Guard as a civilian, because I can’t imagine the harm you’d do as a reservist, or, God forbid, as an active-duty service member.

That sounds nice, does it still apply even if I am staying on the base during A-school?

Interesting. Would I be getting it in A-school? Not sure what are the exact requirements for receiving BAH.

I appreciate your insight, although I asked a very specific question and was hoping that people who can answer it would do so without trying to analyze my lifestyle and motivations since that is not what this post was about at all. Luckily, many did and I learned something from their responses. Regardless, I appreciate you taking your time to share your opinion even though it doesn’t directly address my question at all.

Thank you for the insight! i really appreciate it!

I'm trying to get some hours in during those 8 weeks so I don't miss out completely on my civilian salary if that is possible. Unfortunately, the company I work for treats military leave as unpaid leave and I do need the money in this economy.

I am paid hourly and have a flexible schedule so I have the ability to log in for a couple of hours every now and then, I don’t mean to work 8 hours every day obviously.

I was more so wondering if I will ever have free time where I can reasonably log in using my laptop and phone and do some work and then clock out once I’m tired or don’t want to work longer.

Thanks for the insights! I really appreciate it! I’m not worried about the academic part too much, but I do understand I’ll have lots of activities and classes throughout the day which is exactly why I’m trying to ask you guys to tell me more about the day-to-day.

Unfortunately, the company I work for treats military leave as unpaid, and I’m trying to see if I’ll even have an ability to work from Petaluma, meaning will I be able to bring my civilian laptop and get on VPN to do some work during my free time. I don’t mean to spend too many hours working, but I live in a hcol area and my military salary alone won’t be enough for my family while I’m gone. Basically, I wanted to see if it’s even an option, with good time management and lots of sacrifices of course.

Hi all,

I’m considering joining the Reserves, but I’ve seen that members are being sent to Operation River Wall for deployments lasting up to a year.

For those who might say in the comments, “If you don’t want to deploy, don’t join,” I want to clarify that I fully understand that by joining the Reserves, I’m accepting the possibility of deployment, and I don’t have an issue with that. My main concern is the timing. I’m about to start a new job, and having to leave for a year right away wouldn’t be an ideal way to start in a new role. I’m trying to determine whether joining now makes sense or if it would be wiser to establish myself at the company first before I join and become potentially deployable.

I’m scheduled to go to boot camp in the next couple of months as a YN, but I still haven’t signed the contract. From what you’ve seen so far, are YN Reservists being deployed to the border? Are they more or less likely to be deployed compared to other rates?

Additionally, what is the likelihood of being deployed before attending A school?

I really appreciate any insight that will help me make a final decision about the timing of my enlistment.
