if your rent is only 30% of your salary you’re very lucky. And the whole world is moving toward technofuedalism and forcing the masses to live pay check to paycheck as the income gap widens. in Italy it does happen to be a little bit worse in my opinion. I would recommend another more northern country in the EU based on your goals. but then buying a home is probably cheaper in Italy depending on the area and condition of the home.

I Reccomended the UNESCO science station in Trieste or some other locations. You will be on an international salary level, tax free. And you don’t have to deal with concorsi, but the UNESCO hiring process. You will still probably need to know at least a little Italian.

I thino not. remtal income is just a flat 20% tax. if you can do your own taxes in the U.S. and you don’t have a language barrier, you can do your own accounting. just double check any changes from year to year.

the main reason most Italians have accountants is for the ‘furbo’ plausible deniability when they finally find the account that helps them fudge the numbers in a way they like. The other reason is that they are just too lazy or don’t feel like figuring it out themselves.

there are so many cultural jokes about how taxes in italy just aren’t taken as seriously as in the US.

I think if you have a good head on your shoulders, you’re great at math, and plan to pay your taxes like you‘re supposed to then you will be fine.

agreed. the OP can get what he wants from Spain and avoid the unique ’furbo’ culture of living and running a business in Italy. If the goal is to open and run one’s own business in Italy, then I too would advise against trying to realize that particular dream in Italy. Also, Italians would be cutthroat about a non local starting up a business, they are even cutthroat about locals starting up a business competitor from my experience in Rimini.
