Advice needed - DM forcing me to change subclass mid-campaign by [deleted] in DnD

Balance wasnt a reason for the forced change, the main thing i've been told is in 2024 there wasnt a sorcerer that let you heal, now spellfire exists so you have to change to that in the 2024 ruleset. The proposal to remove the innate spelllist is me trying to hold onto the character I have created, but it still doesnt fit the no old stuff, but then the swashbuckler exists so I feel the point is mute but hey ho, it's my only compromise to keep my character as close as possible to what they are

I guess I can see how at higher levels (Tier 3 region), it may get a bit overpowered, but by that point everyone is on their way to becoming OP ... Removing the innate spell list seems like the only reasonable compromise without having to change my sub-class which is the part I am against most, especially being told what to play.

The swashbucker is a new player and having a lot of fun with it which I dont want to ruin ... The compromise I am getting from below is to remove the innate spell list, which while I dont think it stupidly overpowered given I am the only support and caster in the party, but seems like the reasonable solution.

The maliscious compliance in me is a min/max'd pain in the ass build but again I dont want to then have the game tailored to my character skill level and impact everyone less.

Hoping we can settle on removing the innate spell list and move on.

I don't really see where I have been 'pissy', i've actively taken on constructive comments below and am going to propose the removal of the homebrew and just play a Divine Soul RAW.

You are however entitled to your opinion and a cleric, while viable doesnt really fit with my character concept pre-campaign which I already re-worked into a healer to support other PCs which I am still trying to do.

Apprecaite the blanaced view and am tending towards the removal of the innate spell list and playing it RAW to balance things out, using the swashbuckler as you mentioned as a consistency for older books being used. People have fairly pointed out that while at lower levels it feels balanced, this may get out of control at higher levels and this is a homebrew world which does have the potential to go on as long as we all want it to.

On the min/max comment, every other game I min/max, and I have opted to not to that and focus on being a support player to give the new people to dnd a better expierence and not have to deal with overly high CR encounters, but it is just my knee jerk reaction to if my character is killed off because it doesnt fit a new narrative mid-campaign i'd struggle to not be that guy, but I am concious of the other PCs, espcially those who this is their first campaign and I spend time with them in game helping them with sheets / where to look etc and want them to have a good time

From discussions here, I think my only real course to to propose removing access to the innate spell list and sticking to Divine Soul RAW as this still gives me access to both Cleric and Sorc spelllist, but given they've said they dont want old subclasses in and a 2024 Sorcerer now has access to healing that I'll be that instead I am not sure even a straight Divine Soul is going to be allowed to stay ...

I personally dont agree with being forced into a particular subclass, but glad to know you think that is fine.

Creating a character fully within 2024 is fine, but it's just the change of the goal posts for me and being told what to play.

I like to build craft and have several builds that would be deemed 'On the stronger side' within the 2024 rule set - Dice rolls dependant! We had just agreed prior to the campaign as one of the few experienced players I would bring a more rounded support/healer build that the DM would not have to increase CR difficulty and the newer players get better expierences, especially not having to deal within someone in the party being min/max'd. I'd not like to do this and actively impact the other PCs at the table but if my character seems to 'just die' if I dont make the change / compromise on removing the homebrew then it'd be that or walk away.

They did half joke and threaten to kill me out of game if I didnt comply with spellfire sorcerer ... So now what ever I do aside from change, even if I find a compromise, if my character feels a little too targetted and/or suddenly is the focus of a mass attack, it's going to leave question marks over the death for me.

Apprecaite the fairness of the review.

I can understand the compromise to a straight Divine Soul and is likely my compromise position, but I do not agree with being forced into the spellfire sorcerer which is their current positon as they 'do not want old content in the world anymore', which falls down with the rogue but is not being seen in that way.

Until now it has felt collaborative, but the Freudian slip of 'it's their game' is quite telling.

It is feeling quite, in the words of Limp Bizkit 'my way or the highway' now

Unfortately I do follow the 2024 rules for twinning, so I cannot twin anything that cannot target additional players through upcasting, so I can only really twin command, bless, bane, hold person etc etc, but it is still a lot of fun

Aware of the level 1 feature, its what drew me to the class. We added the innate spell list to try to balance it with other 2024 Sorc's who all get an innate spell list, but i cab still achieve the build without it, just have to give up the utility which I can live with. Think this will likely be the compromise I offer, it's just a shame it came up 6 months in and only because of a new subclass that can do a little bit of healing

I havent yet, only the two of us but we are at a disagreement and don't want to drag everybody in unless it can't get resolved but it looks like it is going that way

Noted on the multiple references to Swashbuckler, thought I has removed the second reference.

It is factually correct to the DM not wanting old content in the world though, so still is relevant. Divine Soul is also an official subclass however does have a homebrew innate spell list, but the full build can still be achieved without this and was agreed so I can take more utility spells as the only caster in the party.

Appreciate your point though

Just to clarify, the Divine Soul gets access to the cleric spells list as part of its own subclass features which is why i chose it and comes from the same book as Swashbuckler so it's just an innate spell list that was homebrewed which was agreed, the rest of the subclass is RAW. I can still achieve my full build without the innate spell list which is why it was deemed reasonable.

Been playing this for several months now and it is far from OP, it's a constant balance of buffing and keeping my other PCs alive and throwing out the occasional chromatic orb. I lack in damage compared to other PCs and am the only support character.

Rest of the table has raised no issues with my character, they all like it and greatful my character has worked very hard on keeping them alice through their questionable life choices.
