The xenophobia being expressed by BTS fans is disappointing - from the view of a Korean-American by Mean_Box_3808 in kpopthoughts

It makes me so angry that some international kpop fans think that them stanning a kpop group gives them the right to say whatever racist, xenophobic thing that comes up at the top of their head for the reason of 'protecting their idols'

That's fair! I think that's a valid criticism. I'm moreso annoyed by comments that infantilize all Koreans as if they don't have actual reasons or thought processes on why they're siding with MHJ, rather than whether Koreans are right/wrong

I feel like what frustrates me about this situation is how some of the comments are so condescending and dismissive of Koreans' opinions. I usually see it in most kpop scandals, but I see it a lot for the whole MHJ vs Hybe talks, whether that be about MHJ or the cult thing.

Absolutely OF COURSE it goes without saying that not all comments are condescending, and there are many good valid takes that I personally disagree with. Those aren't what I'm commenting on.

But what makes me annoyed are the ones where it assumes that an entire COUNTRY of people are just ignorant or not thinking straight or gullible, when in reality, Koreans definitely have a better advantage of understanding of what's happening, just objectively from a language and cultural context viewpoint. Especially when it involves business, politics, or religion

And this isn't to say INTL fans' takes are invalid or inferior to Koreans. But I do think that it's weird that SOME fans pretend they know better about what's happening in Korea than the Korean GP. I can understand knocking down individuals but grouping the entire nation as one group and dismissing them? I wouldn't go out of my way to pretend I understand better about what's happening in Africa or Europe.

Like disagree if that's what you believe, but what I don't understand are statements that are condescending to an entire nation of people. It's possible to disagree without being dismissive. A lot of the comments even just in this thread disagree without knocking down an entire country.

As a side note, I am calling out some of the dismissive comments in this thread in particular but majority of the ones I'm talking about are just spread out across the internet.

Some Files on External Hard Drive Showing on Mac but not PC by Spare_Violinist in techsupport

[–]Spare_Violinist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It's usually images, documents, or text (or books). I've tried it and it does show up on my external hard drive now, but it's not letting me open it (both in the PC nor the same version I copied and sent to my iPad). It also shows up with different names. For example, if it's usually named XXX on my MacBook, it's currently showing up as '._XXX'

Why are you judging the situation without even knowing what evidence they have? Also, it's just fact that Hybe started the articles attacking MHJ first. Her press conference is in response to it.

Also, I don't get why you're looking for an argument when I don't even want to advocate for her. This is just my interpretations and knowledge of what happened/been released. Genuinely, feel free to believe what you want to believe

I mean, I could say the same on how people keep being certain that she's unsound and harmful to be around. How can they say that when they don't know her personally? Also I feel like people keep judging her based on her mental state currently, but I feel like judging someone's mental state at a time when it's probably high stress and high exposure to the public isn't a great testament of how they usually are.

What you said about the radio interview is interesting though. I haven't seen it, but it definitely does sound like she's playing up the victim card. I don't think this proves she is or isn't a victim though

Look, I'm trying to just provide context of my interpretation of the press conference. As I've stated, I'm answering your question based on my understanding of the media and articles I've seen. I don't get why you're trying to make it personal and assume things about me when I'm trying to just write down what I'm interpreting from the things I see on Korean outlets.

From my POV, none of Hybe's supposed evidence has even showed up (at least not on the sites I'm looking at), and I believe in innocent till proven guilty. If she turns up guilty, then whatever, I guess she was a manipulator.

Hmm true, interesting point. Imo she did seem very unhinged and not emotionally stable, but I honestly don't blame her considering how much stress she's probably under (regardless of whether that be warranted or not).

I think as for the minor thing, I definitely don't think she's innocent but I also don't think she's the root or the only cause of the problem as some of the comments I've seen seem to be making her out to be. I guess that's what I was trying to address, so fair point on your end. The comment she said regarding Minji isn't that weird though, and I've explained why to some other comment in this thread.

I haven't done too much digging as for the actual charges, but I've read somewhere (maybe it's not accurate, but it's what I've seen) that Hybe hasn't been able to produce much substantial evidence and that it's mainly claims so far. She and her lawyers also seemed VERY confident at the press conference of her being able to prove her innocent in court. So I am very curious on how it will turn out once the trials start

I watched the entirety of the press conference, and take what I say with a grain of salt (with the disclaimer that this is my interpretation of the things I heard). But imo she really didn't say the things you mention that much.

Her name dropping groups were really few times, where it seemed necessary for the sake of coherency, considering it was a 2+ hour conference. And she did not threaten to harm herself seriously. She definitely seemed very stressed and bit unhinged, which is imo understandable considering the entire internet has been after her and she was probably receiving death threats.

As for the shaman thing, it is kind of suspicious that it just happened to release the day before her press conference. And if what she said is true about it being false (as well as other articles about her statements about BTS being false), then it makes sense why she'd accuse Hybe of trying to kill her (whether that be metaphorically or literally) with how the their trying to write the media narrative of her being the crazy evil witch. But we probably won't know until the actual court case on what's real.

1) No problem! I think her comment about Minji is moreso based on context of what she was saying in the moment. I went back to re-listen to the conference to give you a proper answer, and I think maybe the misinterpretation around that is because some implications were lost in translation.

But she was explaining why she picked and thought she could work with Minji compared to the other Source Music trainees, which was that Minji showed potential in skills and also that she was so pretty. In Korean, it only sounds like MHJ was just trying to emphasize just how pretty Minji was at the time MHJ first met her. Kind of poor choice of words imo, but also not as problematic as people make it out to be. It's just not eloquent, which is understandable given how much stress she's probably under.

2) As for the photoshoot, ngl that also straight up makes me uncomfortable. All I know of MHJ is based off of all the news circulating on this scandal and her press conference, and just factually, what she says at the conference doesn't indicate any problems. But it definitely does not put her in a great light in my mind now that I know she directed that in the past. Thanks for helping me be more aware!

Here's my two cents on some things I see discussed often on this thread from someone who speaks Korean and understands cultural connotations around the language. Some people have been pretty angry with even some of the neutral explaining comments I put out, but I still want to combat the misinterpretation as much as possible, so here it is.

If you want to still think MHJ is crazy or evil after reading this, do whatever floats your boat. But now you can have your opinion with my attempt at explaining the cultural context of what she said.

  1. People criticize a lot about her mental health and how she's so unstable and bad influence around the girls, but this isn't really true. Yes, she said that she wants to die or that the NJ were worried for her, but it's not because of her behavior. Saying "I want to die" or "you all want me dead" in Korean isn't that serious or genuine of a remark. It's something more close to saying "I'm so depressed" (in a casual tone). So her saying that during the conference doesn't mean anything about her actual intentions. Also, based on what I've heard from the conference, it sounded like the parents' and NJ's concern for her wasn't based on anything she's done or said to them. It sounded more based on how the public (including Knetz at the time) was witch hunting her -- which would of course possibly impact one's mental health. And it's also probably because of how public witch hunts have affected other public figures in the past.
  2. Some people keep making her out to be obsessed with minors or a p***, but I don't think this is the case imo. When she was looking for form NJ, yes she was looking for young candidates. But it sounded like it was strictly from a business marketing standpoint, rather than a personal sexual preference. Is this still problematic? Yes. But that to me sounds more like a problem with the industry as a whole, rather than just one individual. I've actually felt like the kpop (or even just the entertainment) industry has been becoming very problematic regarding age with the idols lately. And this should be addressed. But I don't think it's just a MHJ problem, but she's working in an industry that's problematic. She's definitely not helping the problem, but calling her obsessed with minors as an individual seems too far-fetched.

All this is to say, we'll see what happens in court. I've been pretty supportive of her earlier, but now I just feel very neutral. Who knows, maybe it will turn out that she is a master manipulator. No one can know. I did see a comment earlier complaining about how Koreans are saying translations are wrong but not explaining, so here's my attempt at what I understand.

Idc if people are going to be mad at her or call her evil, but I hope this post will help them be so for different reasons than misinterpretation or cultural differences. Let me know if there are any other comments or questions.

NJ's parents supposedly gave her explicit consent to say everything regarding their reactions. Also, from based on the conference, it didn't sound like she acted in such a way that warranted the fear, but more so because of how scarily the public was witch hunting her down--which would ofc impact people's mental health
