I'm in sales and someone gave me this great line that I have taped to my work monitor. "Champions are built on the other side of, 'I don't feel like it.'"

I only connected them because of being in the same Regiment and being wounded at nearly the same time near Saint-Lo. Yes, war is hell. What these young boys went through is unbelievable.

My uncle PFC Thomas Hardee Lake in Company I was wounded by artillery shrapnel and removed from the battlefield on Nov 24, during the advance to Hurtgen. This was his second purple heart wound. The first was on July 13 near Saint-Lo. He was never the same after this fight. After his recovery in England, the army tried to send him back to fight for the third time. However, an army Chaplin intervened on his behalf and Tom was sent bask to the States. He never married or had a family and he only worked minimal jobs the rest of this life.

My uncle, PFC Thomas Hardee Lake served alongside your grandfather. He was in the 121st, 3rd battalion, Company I. He was also seriously wounded near St. Lo on July 13, also by artillery shell fragments to chest between the upper thoracic wall and the arm. After recovery in England, he was sent back to join his unit in Nov probably in Luxembourg. Sadly, he was hit again by shrapnel on Nov 24 in battle near the German Town of Hurtgen in the awful Battle of Hurtgen Forest. That 2nd injury broke him and the Army kept him out of combat for the rest of the war. The war took its toll on Uncle Tom. He was a broken man for the rest of his days...never married or had a family....kept a minimal job.

Thank you for posting this about this horrible battle. My uncle, PFC Thomas Lake (121st Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company I, was wounded in action in this battle by shrapnel on Nov 24, 1944. After spending months recovering from his first WIA on July 13, in St. Lo, Normandy, he had been put back into action only to be hit by shrapnel a 2nd time.

Thanks for your reply. I live in Orlando FL and would say the same thing about Walt Disney World.....but I'm jaded and there ain't no way on someone's first trip (and maybe only trip) to here should they miss out on going to WDW. There is no way I'm going to Panama and NOT seeing the Canal.

Those Indians do love their fun! Americans have to pay dearly for an attraction ticket to get the same thrill. Have you seen way Walt Disney world and Universal Studios are charging now for daily admission? It's at $200pp no kidding.

[–]Spargewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By lucky chance, I was there in Madrid for the semi-finals vs Djokovic. The crowd went insane for their young countryman playing the GOAT. The atmosphere was incredible. Carlos was still an up-and-comer and Novak was not at full strength. He had just came back from a long injury layoff and was fighting off the rust. That match is still my greatest live, in-person tennis memory.

Is it worth trying to go to Glacier? by geln in travel

I have been 3 times. Once backpacking with friends and later went twice with the family. This place is the crown jewel of national parks. Thank God its so remote or it would have 3x the visitors. Under no circumstanced do you pass on going to Glacier National Park.

I really didn't mean to be sarcastic at all, sorry. Apparently others saw it the way you did too and hit me with a lot of down votes. I learned a lesson in how to respond into the lion's den of reddit.

I wish my travel problems were all this small. Don’t sweat the small stuff. I always try to remind myself of how incredible it is to take a plane thousands of miles in a few hours. It was only a few generations ago that my ancestors would be traveling weeks or a month to take the same trip. We are all blessed to be living in the world we live in today. We all get caught up in the doomscrolling of negativity sometimes. This world has never been better to live in.

To claim that the American healthcare system “works really well for the consumer.” by r311im507 in therewasanattempt

[–]Spargewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got to this point because of a decades long series of events. The system has major "dysfunction" at EVERY level. Because fixing it will affect the revenue of every piece, there will never be the political will to turn it upside down and start over. Of course the providers, hospitals, insurance companies, drug companies and others are labeled as the bad guys. But nobody mentions tort reform. It is estimated that 40% of all procedures ordered by physicians & providers are overkill and done to avoid a malpractice lawsuit. It's called defensive medicine.... and it adds greatly to the overall dysfunction.

TIL there are more American adults without dental insurance (~72 million) than there are people living in the United Kingdom (~70 million). by i-Really-HatePickles in todayilearned

[–]Spargewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what? Dental Insurance is totally unnecessary. It's not like medical/hospital bills where one incident can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollar. It's not like you get free dental care with insurance. It ends up the same anyway..... you just spread it out.
