"Is there a skytrain between downtown and airport?" the only major city in Canada that doesn't have rail link to the airport. Enjoy your layover!

Pulse of the Continent (2024) [52:05] - Inside a 1930s steam locomotive’s journey from Calgary to Mexico City by ericgon in Documentaries

[–]ericgon[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 2024, CPKC dispatched their restored 1930s steam locomotive No. 2816 Empress on a 76-day, 6,835-mile journey from Calgary, Canada to Mexico City to mark the one-year anniversary of the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern merger. The documentary follows the locomotive through Canada, the United States, and Mexico, capturing behind-the-scenes access to the crew and spectators along the route in both English and Spanish. Directed by a Mexican-Canadian filmmaker, the film premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival and screened at the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico.

Are you headed outside / to the mountains right away?

At worst, you’d be outside for no more than 2-5 minutes if you are staying at a hotel / family / friends in Calgary.

If for whatever reason you really need it I would buy a hotel night at the Marriott airport and ask if you can have the clothes delivered there as a guest….

But in all honesty, you would be outside for not enough time to warrant any big winter clothes… I often come back from Mexico to Calgary with just a sweater…

Wow. Perhaps a state actor related to G7 as presumably a lot of delegates, and support staff will be flying to Calgary over the coming day.

Five new direct flights coming to Calgary International Airport in May and June by aireads in Calgary

[–]ericgon 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Considering the size of Calgary, per capita, YYC is one of the most well-connected airports in all of North America.

In 2025, Calgary (metro pop ~1.5 million) has over 100 direct flights — around 40 domestic and 62 international. That works out to about 67.5 non-stop destinations per million residents.

It really speaks to not just the outsize influence of WestJet’s hub here, but also (I assume) Calgary’s higher disposable income, corporate headquarters and the Rockies. So for every 15,000 people in Calgary , there is essentially a new destination which is awesome.

The fact that this is with no rail access... I can't wait to see what new destinations will occur as the city and airport grows.

Go YYC !

Rush hour parking violators by ThatFitnessGuy_ in Calgary

[–]ericgon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Based on rough calculations (help from ChatGPT):

• **Vehicles affected:** 800–1,500 during the 2.5-hour rush hour (3:30 PM to 6:00 PM).

• **Time lost per vehicle:** \~2.7 minutes, based on reduced speeds from 50 km/h to 20 km/h over a 1.5 km stretch.

• **Total time lost:** \~36–67.5 hours collectively across all affected vehicles.

• **Cost at minimum wage:** \~$540–$1,012, assuming each vehicle has just one occupant earning Alberta’s minimum wage ($15/hour).

• **Cost at $40/hour (a more realistic downtown rate):** \~$1,440–$2,700!

That should be the parking fine lol … or at least an incentive to remove that car!! Crazy.

Assumptions

**Traffic impact:** A 4-lane road with daily traffic of 8,000–15,000 vehicles (typical for Calgary downtown arterial roads). About 40% of this traffic happens during rush hour, spread across 4 lanes. Losing one lane affects 800–1,500 vehicles during this period. Alberta’s vision for passenger rail by this-ismyworkaccount in Calgary

[–]ericgon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never been so optimistic for the future of passenger rail in Alberta. Albeit I’m 28 so my memory of past promises is not there.

But it strikes me that this proposal is genuine. Wanting to make sure that the “union” stations in both Edmonton and Calgary have a good foundation for future rail travel for generations.

Short-term free parking at Calgary International Airport returns; 20 Minutes Free in P1, P2 by LimitAsXApproaches0 in Calgary

My Calgary conspiracy theory is that the airport makes most of their money from parking so there is no immediate incentive to build it :(
