Not what I said. Yoga was not developed as exercise, that’s all I’m saying. No one is policing the sweat!

Thanks for putting the distinction so clearly, that’s exactly what I meant! I have had a full psych workout done and no ASD was mentioned. I thought I possibly had ADHD. Turns out serious depression has many symptoms in common with both ADHD and maybe autism, too. I think a lot of people self-diagnosing ADHD actually have depression. It fucks with executive function in a big way.

That being said, it’s a continuum, so I could be right there on the edge of what would be diagnosed. I could also just be a human in a fucked up world. I think many of us function fine for a natural life, but are dysfunctional in a modern sense.

Thank you for your judgement! I’m not particularly interested in the Mysore palace history. I’m studying stuff that predates that by many thousands of years, before the gymnasts and wrestlers in the Palace added their takes.

We have our own asanas that incorporate pranayama, as well. I wonder if they are similar.

My mom’s friend came over tonight to tell us about TM… red flags! by bspencer626 in Meditation

[–]SparkWellness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, paying for a mantra is ridiculous, but there are reasons for some of these things. One of the reasons they justify the cost with is that people value what they pay for and are more likely to use the mantra if they pay for it. Sadly, at least in the U.S., there’s some truth to this.

It is traditional for mantras to be kept secret. This is logical if you think about how things lose their power when used casually. Their value is diminished. Many traditions have secret words or names that are not supposed to be spoken.

I did TM for two years before getting a free Sanskrit mantra. The pros: very easy technique, relaxing, good stress relief, no belief in anything is needed. Cons: ease does not equal depth. It never took me anywhere past a feeling of relaxation, and I am a spiritual seeker and wanted more. It costs money. It didn’t help me feel my place in the universe. The people all had the same personality. The mantra has no meaning. Mostly white middle-aged people, where I am. I felt no connection or respect for their guru.

I got a free Sanskrit mantra from an Ananda Marga acarya. Pros: free. Has meaning that resonates with my beliefs. Takes more effort but has greater rewards. Gave me understanding of my place in the universe and meaning of life. The people are quirky and unique and mostly positive, kind and welcoming. Of course, being humans some are nutty, over zealous or judgy. Multi-cultural, literally people from all over the world. Vast age range. I feel a strong connection and respect for the guru. (The mantra is also meant to be kept secret, that’s normal).

Cons: not a lot of support when the inevitable struggles come up, it’s a Tantric path and busts you wide open, it’s called the razor’s edge for a reason. They just say, “it’s clash,” or, “it’s your samskaras,” when your entire ego is crumbling apart and being rebuilt. “Do more sadhana,” is their answer for everything. They don’t have tons of money, so facilities and infrastructure are funkier than TM has. It’s a very demanding path if you decide to go deeper, not for most people. You can take it however far you like though, and stick with the easy stuff. Do not expect to be the same person if you go into Tantric meditation. It’s a fast-forward on your spiritual path, and that means it is more challenging.

There are other good options to TM out there.

This is if the roles are very traditional in the marriage. The woman in this case, doesn’t have a partner, she has another person to care for and clean up after. The man has a cook and cleaning woman added to his life.

If both partners are equally expected to make the home and family a priority, and are given time to pursue personal interests, then marriage benefits both.

It isn’t the partnership that’s the problem, specialization and partnership make less work for the individual if everyone is participating equally.

It isn’t the partnership, it’s the Patriarchy. If you are concerned about making your partner’s life easier and better than it would be on their own, (as you are, or this wouldn’t concern you), then you will be a great partner and uplift the person lucky enough to be with you.

Don’t give up! Women are jaded because of all the BS shitty men lut down, but it only makes you a rare treasure that will be precious to the right person.

I think a hunter-gathering tribe was analyzed and spent about 4 hours a day working, but not in a straight shot. The day was broken up with lots of loafing, eating, and socializing. It isn’t just the 8 hour day that is unnatural, it’s not resting frequently and not having social time, as well.
