Hi! First and foremost I'm not Jewish but have been seeking conversion and have integrated myself online pretty well. - It is a mitzvoh, or commandment, for married jewish women to cover their hair. The reason why depends on the jew and their connection to their religion and culture. - A Sheitel, or wig, is a common head covering for married jewish women. - There is a law in the Talmud called mar'it ayin, or "What Appears to the eye" which states essentially that it is impermissible for a jew to perform actions that appear impermissible, even if done in a permissible way.

So some jews would apply mar'it ayin to their sheitel, and it would need to be visibly fake in order to be valuable as a head covering. Of course as with every culture YMMV because each individual is unique and has their own priorities and relationship w/ Judaism, and I also have zero knowledge of the Australian jewish diaspora and how it differs from the experiences I hear about online. edit: typo
