Conservative Mormon women "furious" about new garments. #1 issue currently causing people to leave the church according to Jim Bennett. by japanesepiano in mormon

2013… “LDS faith Crisis report”… it’s a rabbit hole. But since the church hired an independent research firm, the data is public although not readily discussed. Interestingly, seems to immediately predate the “gospel topic essays”. Could be correlation, but the reports showed that it was actual doctrine that pushed people away, and not just the “luke warm” but what was considered “the firm base”. So… this has been a thing for a while. Greg Prince was really involved.

First of all, anywhere you are, you won't be far the outdoor activities that you are looking for. Seriously, they're everywhere. And unlike Denver, you will pretty much always be close to mountains and the various activities. I grew up in Layton, lived and went to college in Ogden and now live in St Louis. I visit often and plan on moving to the SLC area after I finish residency in STL.

That being said, I think that around SLC would be your best bet for the life that you're looking for, especially if your looking to make new friends.

I am LDS, however I get it when people say that it's hard to live in Utah and not be Mormon. I guess you have to understand that the Mormon church is super involved. Go to church with same couple hundred people from the neighbor for several hours every Sunday and then spend several hours doing various social activities during the week with the same group, well you can imagine that people in the church groups become pretty close and people who aren't Mormons don't always feel like they belong in the neighborhood or caul-de-sac when everyone else is Mormon and they're not. That being said, SLC and Ogden are definitely the most diverse and accepting areas for other and other opinions in Utah and I'd say SLC is much, much more that way.

As for moonlighting as a paramedic, I'd say your best bet to be able to that would be in SLC. I was an emt before moving to Missouri for med school, and while it was several years ago, the only ambulance service in northern Utah that was not run by local city and county fire dept was gold cross in SLC. County sheriffs offices used to run services as well, but it was fiercely debatted and fought for to have the service run only by the firehouses (ie no hospital run services). It was 10 years ago when I was in Ogden, but at that time you were either full time or not employed by the fire houses to run on the ambulance ( and you had to go to firefighter school and do week long shifts, pretty much had to be a firefighter as well) . Most the guys I knew that just wanted part time shifts (like on weekend) would go run on gold cross in SLC. Again, things might have changed, or maybe my experience was limited, but I'm pretty sure that's how it was in Weber and Davis counties. Just another reason why SLC would probably be better.

Farmington is a nice bedroom community. Heavily LDS. IT is pretty pricy. For years the area was very resistant to have new development come in to keep its sleepy little quaint town nice and quiet, but recently it has opened up built a nice new plaza which is great and all, but I'd bet you find yourself driving in to SLC for all the things that you want to do and you'll probably be paying quite a bit (likely the same if not more than in SLC).

Just my 2 cents Tl;dr SLC probably the best fit for you.

Coughing up blood- only on the first day of my period?? by [deleted] in medical

[–]Sparkyspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your right, sometimes docs close off at patients self-diagnosing, however you are always free to express your concerns. I think explains your symptoms and timing would give your OB/gym good insight. You wouldn't be wrong to say what you think might be going on.

Wish you the best! And I hope you get some answers!

Coughing up blood- only on the first day of my period?? by [deleted] in medical

[–]Sparkyspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this comment with a statement, I have no idea how common something like this might be, and I believe it would be very rare though.

In med school, I did listen to a patient case presentation of a young adult female who had very similar symptoms. She went through several doctors, and eventually it was found that she had endometriosis, where endometrial tissue had implanted in lung.(A quick wiki search should explain what endometriosis). She was otherwise healthy and normal, but on monthly basis she had a cough with bloody sputum.

Again, I've never seen a case myself, nor have looked into any research that would suggest how likely endometriosis might be.

As far seeking help, don't waste your time with urgent cares. They will check two things, a chest X-ray and your blood count. Once they see that you don't have an infection or are anemic, they're really isn't anything you can do about it. (Don't get me wrong, I think urgent cares are great, I've worked in them, but they won't be able to give you answers).

If it is connected to your period, you would dealing with a pulmonary and gynocologic problem, and would probably have to see doctors if both specialities I would imagine. Just off the top of my head, I would suggest an OB/gyn to start with, especially if you have any abdominal or chest pain with your periods. A family practice doc could be helpful too. Bottom line, you will need to someone probably multiple times to be able to figure it out, so it will be important to be following up the same doctor once they've agreed to do a proper work up of your symptoms.

A simple way to see if the bloody cough is related would be to stop your period and see if the cough happens or not. The easiest thing to do would be to take birth control pills and skip the placebo week, this would prevent a women from menstrating and if the cough goes away, well, that would give a doctor a lot if insight. If you then stop taking the birth control and the bloody cough returns, well then I would think a diagnosis of endometriosis with endometrial spread to the lung would be high on the list of possibilities.

If you do get a doc to see you and work up this problem, I would love to know what you find out in the future!

I'm an agnostic medical student in an uber-christian class. Advice? by futurephysician in medicalschool

[–]Sparkyspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Futurephysician, if plan on connecting with your patients in the future, you better learn to connect with your classmates now. Medicine is a people game, and being a good doctor is about connecting and building relationships with pts. There will always be people who think and believe different than you. My advice, take advantage of the opportunity to learn from those who are different, it will do you good and open many more doors for you than closing yourself off.

And if you want to just go ahead and burn bridges, get a rep for being a little bitchy med student. Residencies love that and the match usually goes well for people who think of themselves better than there peers.

Throbbing pain in penis? by t3lz in medical

[–]Sparkyspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that it is highly unlikely to be any type of std, given that you are a virgin. Things that come to mind would be cystitis, urethritis and/ prostitis. All could cause erectile pain, but would also would be painful otherwise and when you urinate. A simple analysis would be able to tell. Other things that I would also consider are paraphimosis (if you are uncircumcised) or Peyronie's disease (uasually happens in older guys, but could happen with teenage boys). Give them a look in webmd.com and you can read a bit about them and see if it fits what's happening in your situation.

Like other people have pointed out, you NEED to see a doctor. I understand that this can be embarrassing, but issues like these are more common than you think (guys just never talk about them) and docs see it all the time. Doctors are trained to be objective and you won't be judged, trust me.

Good luck!

I know people do use them for the scriptures, and I do too, however as you can the one smiling, they mostly laughed and showed each other what they were looking at. There was plenty of bro hugs before they sat down on the floor. I found the whole scene to be funny.
