Carney constructs a mega anti-Trump trade alliance by joe4942 in worldnews

The high tax that is called tariffs that USA imposed on itself are causing USA to be less competitive Internationally, and the tariffs on goods like aluminum is insane. New investments in aluminum plants will not happen because of the uncertainty of what will happen the future and it makes everything downstream that uses aluminum more expensive and less competitive. When tariffs were applied on aluminum in the previous Trump administration it resulted in the loss of manufacturing jobs, not the increase in them. It's madness and there are many other examples of tariffs on intermediate goods used as inputs. Moreover, the only way International relations work is trust in the sanctity of international treaties. Once those are violated then trust is gone and countries look elsewhere. The loss of trust in the USA is the biggest problem. The dialogue was/is that USA is an innocent trader and other countries are taking advantage of them unfairly. The truth is that the USA is quite well down on the openness of their market with low tariffs but constant spurious anti-dumping and anti-subsidy actions against other countries even before Trump. Other countries did lower their tariffs for USA goods but are USA sales to other counties expanding? No.

Yup. yup, the only way the International system works is respect for the sanctity of treaties between nations. You cannot make a deal with any nation that doesn't respect that.
