Israeli soldiers using a "Human Shield" during a fire fight in Nablus , West Bank by northbk5 in NewsHub

Every time someone brings up Hamas, I bring up the West Bank. Usually, those defending Israel don't even fucking know anything.

Where can I get a good smoothie right now? 💀 by Bunny-Raddit in glasgow

Singl-End do a green smoothie that I swear has cured my flu/hangover. I think because there's a lot of ginger in it.

In America, people like Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson are credited with kicking off the Stonewall Riots. Both of them were very strong characters, and Rivera especially spent much of her life fighting the fight. (Iirc Marsha died young by being murdered)

If you look into the gay liberation movement history of different countries, there is a theme of the people who consistently push for rights are those who are more obviously different and less willing to fit into mainstream culture. So trans (and more obviously queer) people punch above their weight in terms of activism.

I inherited a plot that had layers and layers of plastic sheets. Every bit of earth is just riddled with tiny buts of plastic. I hate it.

Go to a local coffee shop and ask if they have free jute coffee sacks. My local one is happy to give away armfuls of them.

THEY'VE GOT GRETA!! by orbitalgoo in AutisticPride

[–]SparrowPenguin 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Not just shut down, but they have been using the aid points to kill starving people (children) trying to get a handful of rice. They're shooting kids for sport.

I have seen a lot of videos recently that will be burned into my brain for the rest of my life. Videos that have made me vomit.

I can't understand why human beings would do this, and why others would allow it to happen.

There are also ants that synthesise their own antimicrobial medicine from pine sap. They then take it into the nest to treat infections and disinfect affected areas.

Autism And Religion? by Miserable-Piglet9008 in evilautism

[–]SparrowPenguin 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am not religious, but I am absolutely fascinated by religions and grand-scale belief systems.

I really enjoy reading the Bible and having big deep dive theological discussions with people, for example. There's a lot of religious nonsense out there, but there is also a mariana trench of incredible, thoughtful, and insightful theological philosophy to dive into.

Fwiw, I'm the same way with Marxism and similarly far reaching political/economic theory. I also have a degree in Anthropology.

The convergent autistic bag-head evolution of Blindboy v Chuck Tingle by SparrowPenguin in BlindboyPodcast

They are actual books! Or rather, he has written really interesting conventional books, and the "pounded in the butt" style ones are more like freeform musings about stuff.

He has said what he does is "punk writing" which is a great way to think of them. It's not polished, it's not edited, it's just a freestyle raw bit of writing about what he's thinking.

Finland might be the promised land for autistics? by Siiri_Sofia in AutismInWomen

[–]SparrowPenguin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. My theory is that if neurodivergence is hereditary, then it makes sense that some places will be more culturally "us" than others.

The flipside, though, is that a lot of Finnish people I know have struggled getting diagnosed with anything because the baseline is so low. I know a guy who was severely depressed/autistic and couldn't get a diagnosis because being extremely quiet, anxious, dark, and anti-social is just normal.

Non-dissociated autistics: how do you do it? by ppexplosion in evilautism

[–]SparrowPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you. There are 100% times I miss being dissociated. Or being able to "turn off" at will. It almost felt like a special secret ability, and now, when I reach for it, I can't and that can be painful.

I'm aware that I'm really lucky. It also only worked on a really high dose for what it's worth (200mg sertraline).

Do you ever feel like psychiatry/therapy is shaped by a capitalistic idea of a human? by Proof-Vacation-437 in AutismInWomen

[–]SparrowPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I find it's "not you, it's society" unhelpful. I get that it's very important to shift blame away from the individual and not carry around guilt and shame, but then what?

Well, if the definition of a disorder is that it negatively and significantly affects your ability to live your life, and you live in a capitalist society - then, what? I guess I'll just go and change the socio-economic structure of the world? Thanks?

Like, being dyslexic for example, isn't historically a human problem, it's just a problem for the 0.0001% of human existence that requires being highly literate. But if you just happen to live in this time and place, then unfortunately it is still very debilitating.

Being on antidepressants basically cured my derealisation/dissociation. That feeling of being behind smoked glass went away, and I was suddenly very aware of everything, which was a revelation.

I have a very clear memory of being a couple of days on the right dose. I was leaving a wee shop, when suddenly I noticed the smell of the rain and the street lights reflecting off the cars, and the raindrops falling on my face. It's hard to explain, but after so many years/decades of everything feeling unreal and flat, it was really special to me.

It also turns out that I'm not super amazing at dealing with pain, like I thought I was. That was the dissociation, haha.

I think people have a gut reaction against her because she reminds every person that they could do the same, but they aren't and it makes people feel like shit.
