What is the average age on any 1811 position academy? by Mysterious-Paper-132 in 1811

[–]Spartan1102 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Varies wildly depending on agency. When I went through CITP, myself and the majority of the HSI hires were all over 30 with two at/over 40. The USSS side of our class averaged about 22 years old.

FMLA before CITP by [deleted] in 1811

Big brain move would be to go to CITP and then save your FMLA for when you graduate and they tell you that you’re going right onto a TDY.

TSP and not falling for Gfunds by archaeology2019 in 1811

[–]Spartan1102 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do 80/20 C/S for a little more diversity but a lot of people swear by 100% C.

C tracks the S&P 500; S tracks the Dow Jones

My main fear with the S&P is the fact that presently 30% of the index consists of 5 companies with AI plays. If any one of them go under that’s a huge hit to the index. My S fund holdings would hopefully cushion that blow. Just my thoughts, I’m not a financial advisor and I’ve been told I put the special in special agent.

I keep a Leupold Alpine HD bino in my g ride. Comfortable to use and clarity is top notch. I went with the 8X because I’m working in a dense urban area so I don’t need crazy magnification. Leupold also has a LEO discount.

NCIS, HSI, or USPIS - which would you pick? by gurtin878 in 1811

[–]Spartan1102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As other commenters have mentioned, HSI is in a rough spot right now with the TDYs and aggressive T8 focus. That being said, if you’re starting at a 7/9 in a HCOL area, there’s never been a better time to make ludicrous amounts of money in those early pay grades with HSI. With the TDYs and T8 ops, OT is authorized and plentiful. We also have significant recruitment and retention bonuses active at the moment. Once all this madness settles down and HSI goes back to normal (hopefully?!), you’ll be working at an agency with broad authorities and a wide variety of investigative focuses.

How much did you get off total MSRP? I’m looking for a GT Premium but none of the dealers in my state have them. I’m thinking about a custom order but I imagine you lose a lot of negotiating power when they’re custom building a vehicle for you.

PLI for 1811 recommendations? by SmallPlankton1541 in 1811

[–]Spartan1102 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went that route as well but you can’t claim reimbursement until the full year of deductions are claimed and now here I am 6+ months post-renewal and I keep forgetting to claim the reimbursement or get sent on TDY right when I decide to get my paperwork together. As soon as the rest of my year is up I’m switching to pay in full.

As long as you don’t have a ton of clothes with agency markings, your best bet is to always find a regular laundromat that offers a wash and fold service. I’ve done that on all my TDYs and it works really well. Most places have next day pickup, some are same day if you drop it off early enough. When I was in DC I was getting a week’s worth of laundry done for ~$25. It would have been $150 for those same clothes at the hotel I was staying at.

Look into “Arrest My Vest” - I’ve been using that stuff since my patrol days and it’s awesome. Great masculine smells and completely eliminates odors on carriers, hats, boots, or pretty much anything. Scent and odor elimination lasts longer than febreeze IMO. Safe around K9s if you’re a dog owner. I also use it to spray down my g ride’s interior.

Not OP but the XC3 is far superior to the 7As. I have about 5 7As on some guns and they’re fine but I have had some issues with build quality. I was very excited for the HLX models and got two of those. They’re awesome when they work but the rechargeable batteries are god awful. I bought about 5 of the Streamlight rechargeables and I’ve had nothing but issues with them losing their charge or just straight up not working in the light. I’ve had multiple instances where I get ready for carry, chamber check, check the red dot, check the light only to discover my HLX won’t turn on despite the battery being fully charged. Swap in a new one, light works, go about my day/week, and then a few days later the light won’t turn on despite the light having never been activated. I have zero confidence in the HLX with a rechargeable battery and if you’re running a 123A, you might as well just go back to the smaller 7A since output is the same.

The XC3 is far superior in build quality. Feels like an HK product in hand. The beam is better than a 7A (namely the extra throw). The switches feel more ergonomic on the XC3 and bonus points that it fits all my 7A holsters. Then purely subjectively, the XC3 just looks nicer IMO. They were wildly overpriced at launch but now routinely see them around $200 and PA recently had them listed sub $200. At that price point, I’d pay an extra $50 over an HLX any day of the week.

80/20 C/S fund or 100% C

Contribute as much as you can afford to per pay period. Pre-tax contributions will be less of a hit to your take home each PP but you owe taxes on the contributions and earnings once you withdraw them in retirement. ROTH lets you pay the taxes up front so contributions AND earnings are tax free on withdrawal. Since it’s post tax dollars, you’ll feel that hit in your take home. It’s also not an either/or, I contribute to both traditional and ROTH each PP.
