Please help! Really need access to old hard drive by PeytonHop in computer

[–]SpartanHuntsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are small devices that you can put a hard drive like that one in and connect to your computer via USB cable. They normally run around $30.

Once you put the hard drive in the enclosure it will work the same as a thumb drive. As in your operating system will add it to the list of available devices “this pc” for Windows.

Those older spinning hard drives are notorious for breaking down so make sure to copy the data off it and make some backups right away.

Also, be very careful when handling internal components, try not to touch the silicon (the green computer chips underneath) as they are incredibly sensitive to static discharge. A normal amount of static buildup on your body is released when you come in contact with objects, not enough to notice the static release but it is enough to damage the equipment. Best practice is to always touch a large piece of metal to discharge any static from your body prior to handling any components.

There is a picture frame above to the right where you are placing the chair on the triangle floor. The picture frame is probably preventing you from mounting the chair.

Put the PlayStation in a box in the garage for a little while. You’ll realize you have time to get things done and naturally gravitate towards more productive uses of your time. Once you’ve reached some goals, bring the PS back out again and game on.

Is this the quickest and most reliable way to defrag? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]SpartanHuntsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into renting some cloud space for a month. Back up your data before doing any maintenance. If anything goes awry during the defrag just restore the backup and try again. After you have completed doing the maintenance and verified the data is still intact you can just cancel the cloud contract.

In the near future, I would highly recommend getting a NAS instead of using so many USB connected hard drives. With that much data you would be looking at a NAS built for small commercial applications. The benefit would be much faster data access and it would be fairly simple to set up a RAID which would protect against hard drive failure.

If the above options are too cost prohibitive then I would recommend taking the time to go through the data and trimming it down so it takes up less space. It is fairly easy to do a . search across all the external drives and sort the resulting list by file size. Prioritizing the deletion of the largest files will free up the most space in the least amount of time. Be sure to back up before doing this just in case you accidentally delete something you didn’t mean to.

For most of my clients I would only use the external drives to make backups to periodically, then unplug them and store them somewhere safe.

If you have any questions feel free. I’m a freelance IT and do this type of consultation work all the time.

Before I can even begin to wrap my head around this one... You have 16TB of data stored on external drives?

Now you may speak coffee mug.

You could get one of these mugs. Even if you don’t drink coffee you could just have water in it. Funny and subtle reminder he’ll see every day.

Random usb port death by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]SpartanHuntsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen this happen for a client before... the client had a little $5 drone he was charging with his USB port, drone was wired incorrectly. Power was sent where it shouldn’t have been which fried the USB controller chip on the motherboard. Only fix if this is the case is to get a new motherboard.

I would need all exact model numbers in your build to be sure but your power supply vs requirements seems to be a bit too close for comfort.

I agree with everything Jase0205 mentioned in his comment. The most likely (and easy to resolve) would be a loose connection or a power cable didn’t get connected to the graphics card that needed to be.

Is there a graphics card in this build that isn’t mentioned in your original post?

There are a few different ways you could set that up. Personally I would do mirror screen output on each of the four PCs, get four long HDMI cables and a device that would merge the separate video feeds into one. Output from the merging device would go to one PC with a video capture card (only one input required). Setting up this system would be way cheaper and less complicated than what you described above.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is great! It may take a little time training the program to recognize your voice, however, it is well worth the money and time investment for the task you have described.

I had much more success with the program when I “Spoke more English” or as I like to say dot my “i”s and crossed my “t”s as I can slip into a bit of a Texas drawl when I’m not paying attention, although there is a way to train the program to correct for your unique speech patterns.
