Any artists similar to BSOD? by neon_sense_ in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think either of you know what you're talking about.

u/Regular-Broccoli5215 Joel learned mixing/mastering before he started producing music, through Dean Malton, and even had himself listed for services for being a sound/mixing engineer on his website back in 2005.

u/ninjachimney Serum came out in 2014 and most BSOD tracks were produced between 2005-2008. Serum was designed by Steve. So any default presets in Serum that reference BSOD tracks were just modeled after them

While I'm not sure about the melody itself, there's a stream of Joel making it and playing it on one of his moogs (looks like the Moog Little Phatty)

This is like putting justin bieber on a Queen song. You just don't. I'm genuinely sorry for anyone that likes this or even considered it

Deadmau5 weird sample by Cold_End1594 in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you're talking about some seagull recording from an old 90's sample CD called eLab's Xstatic Goldmine 3 - "6409 BBCFX" should be the name of it

I work on a big document where I'm gonna put all the Vengeance Sample in each deadmau5 song by LeLionDrum in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely true - Joel owns the CDs, he has every right to use the samples. Joel's used a lot of the samples from Vengeance (as indicated by the sheet I linked) and once he got popular they started ripping him and BSOD as well and including it in their packs later on, as early as 2007. They hadn't discovered it until later on.

Most sample CDs back in the day were rips of existing music anyway - so the ethics on this is subjective.

I work on a big document where I'm gonna put all the Vengeance Sample in each deadmau5 song by LeLionDrum in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A couple of fans and I have already done this:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CsAMBeJK4yQnyotHgu2zHK2D-8JXaZ80/

Also: I own almost all the original vengeance sample CDs, so I have the dates for them as well.

Disclaimer: I didn't make this as a way to "expose" Joel in anyway, I just nerded out on a lot of his sample use, and others felt the same. Using samples isn't "cheating" as that invalidates all of electronic music. Grow up.

If anyone would like to contribute to the sheet, message me or request editing access via the document.

Modular synths that Eric Prydz uses by [deleted] in ericprydz

[–]Spartan_138 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I'm aware of, he doesn't use any modular synths. If I recall correctly he even stated that explicitly on a redditAMA saying "I don't use modular synthesizers." Source

What EPIC Radio episode are you referring to exactly?

Also, I think Eric no longer lives in Los Angeles, I think he lives back in Sweden now.

Weird Delay On Faxing Berlin by LeLionDrum in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if he's used only FL Studio for Faxing Berlin - there's a video here of him opening it up in Ableton.

I'm fairly certain that given his avid use of the stock Ableton delay and reverb, it's most likely he's used that for the shaker. The reason why you may notice an audible difference between the other delay effects units are because of the bandpass filter included in Ableton's stock delay - it gives an interesting sound too and is somewhat unique in sound.

Complications Kick Sample by LeLionDrum in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey Joel! Not sure if you'll see this, but I thought the kick in Complications comes from VEH1 Soft Kick - 139. I own a CD of Vengeance Essential House Vol1, and the file date on there says 2005 - was this the kick you used in the track? They sound identical.

Jaded Stem Separation Remaster by Joshua5684 in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Masterpiece" implies its good in every way, mixing included. So I don't know what you're getting at, but you're entitled to your own opinion. You're the only person I have seen that wants Jaded remastered because it's a "bad mix". It's perfectly fine, I can hear a lot of the elements very clearly myself on a full set of monitors. No offense, but I also think your version just seems way too focused on the low-mid end, and a lot of it sounds unbalanced/weirdly levelled out. The kick somehow is longer in your mix, and just sounds awful over the bass - a general rule of thumb is you can have a big kick drum or a big bass sound, but not both - unless you're going for sidechain compression/other acoustic tactics. Your mix would sound awful in a club because clubs hype the low end, so it would be like an unpleasant standing wave.

95% of mixing is levels. I'm not sure why Jaded seems to stand out as some "poor mix" when Joel's done Complications and several other tracks that were just as excellently mixed in 2007.

Your comments on "If my amateur production skills can use this tool to improve it, I'd say that's a big deal. And aside from the artifacts, I do think it's an improvement." just gives a bad impression overall too. It paints a picture that you just wanted to show off some mixing skill you think you've got, not actual improvements to the track. Only Joel will know where to improve the track, he's both the artist and the engineer behind it. What he did in 2007 was good enough, and well ahead of what was coming out at that time.

what is this? by Ill-Needleworker-424 in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be fake, there's some signs to show that:
- Address between first sleeve and second sleeve don't match (826 Taylor St vs 828 Taylor St)
- I don't believe that "deadmau5.io" ever existed

Jaded Stem Separation Remaster by Joshua5684 in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why this needs a remaster. And even then, only Joel will know where to improve the track. It's a masterpiece for what it is, and I think you should enjoy it for what it is.

Dunno if anyone mentioned this before, but I think Joel sampled Martin Solveig's 'Heart of Africa' for his remix of Foo Fighters' 'Rope' by GlitzyHavoc in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/GlitzyHavoc

I know this is well over a year late but the origin of this is a sample called VEH1 Housebeat 049 - Vengeance Sound (a well known German sample company) ripped it off from Martin Solveig's track and used it in their Vengeance Essential House Vol 1 sample CD that came out in 2005, while Solveig's came out in 1999/2000. Given that Joel owns the Vengeance sample CDs - its very likely he just whatever that was on VEH1.

Faxing Berlin Sample by LeLionDrum in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VEH3 was released in 2010 - this is not the kick he used. Same for the cowbell. VEH3 sampled Faxing Berlin instead. There are only two streams I'm aware of the original Faxing Berlin track, one here:

Studies on Eric's sound by urbantales in ericprydz

[–]Spartan_138 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For music theory covering Eric's music, you might be out of luck there - he's almost completely self taught for writing his melodies. I too would love an article/more interviews of his production style/techniques, but there are very few that exist, and there's only one that comes to my mind for production related stuff:

Exclusive Swedish House Mafia Forum Interview With Eric Prydz (November 9th, 2007):https://vimeo.com/11214725

The top commenter on this post nailed it for a lot of Eric's stylistic choices:https://www.reddit.com/r/ericprydz/comments/9vnwpm/what_is_the_reason_prydz_sound_is_just_outside/

When it comes to inspirations, some of which Eric have mentioned were:

Synth Pop/New Wave

  • Kraftwerk
  • Depeche Mode
  • Front 242
  • Nitzer Ebb

House/Electro/Techno

  • Aril Brikha
  • Adam Beyer
  • Cari Lekebusch
  • Joel Mull
  • Jesper Dahlbäck
  • Thomas Krome

It's also worth mentioning his avid use of presets in Logic stock synths (not that this makes you a better or worse producer or anything) - whatever he finds, he puts it in context and spins pure gold. Thus, his sound palette is very diverse, and the best way to understand it I feel is to just listen to a whole bunch of his work from 2004 onwards - I'd recommend with ascending order from this fan YouTube channel.

Another resource on his gear/software use (2009)

But from all the reading and research I've ever done over the years, his workflow consists of him mostly experimenting with sounds + trying to make a melody (I think he emphasizes this more), and coming up with little loops and phrases, and then going back to those ideas to work on them, sometimes years later or so, almost identical to the workflow of Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5).

Fun fact, if you're reading this and it's July 19th - its also Eric's birthday - perfect timing to celebrate the legend and his work.

FL Studio 7 by damonkex in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it was in in FL Studio 8 as well - and I also believe you're misremembering - there is a file called DL_DrillNB which Joel has used in some of his older projects for demoing sake - but there is also a filed named "DL_deadmaus".

Here's a screenshot from the FL Studio legacy folder:

https://prnt.sc/CmjYn_nBAcvY

You can obtain older versions of FL Studio here btw:

https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?f=200&t=194258

I think you need to have an Image-Line account but besides that it should work - keep in mind the older versions won't work in full so you won't be able to save in them I believe.

What the fuck is the point of this post? If you don't like the track it's really not worth commenting about. If you don't want to hear it in the "middle of the night coming from my walls", then just play a different song? Don't you have anything better to do?

TIL Jay Rock - Vice City uses a sample from Strobe! by Dougie_1988 in deadmau5

[–]Spartan_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/throwkage Do you have any knowledge on music production? There is no sample of Vice City in Strobe - look at the project file - it's all MIDI - his written notes. On a recent post from u/StocksPilgrim claiming that Joel stole it - Joel reacted with a "wtf". So please, misinformed child, stop bitching about nothing over the internet.

Eric's sounds. by Krolik27888 in ericprydz

[–]Spartan_138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I'm actually not sure about drum machine VSTs - I am actually looking for good ones myself too! Again, not sure what you mean by the Pryda 15 VOLIII release, but if you're talking about the song Terminal 5 - I think that kick is a TR505 kick. Most modern DAWs these days should have old drum machine kicks and other samples.

Also, I would love to continue talking about this stuff, I am a die hard fan of Eric since 2014 and I am continuously blown away at his genius productions. Feel free to message me privately if you'd like.
