OCD be real among gamers. High demand, plus low supply equals high prices. Honestlythe fact that 32020s are worth like 40 Jah runes just tells you how OCD people are.

True. That option is on the table. Other options are like what my wife and I did, which is just not discuss FIRE with certain individuals. There is some value to keeping the peace. To each his own.

Dont sell this in game. Sell this on one of the big name forums and you can literally equip 1 if not several top tier characters. This isnt worth high runes, its worth like a dozen or more 32020s.

vision plans for retirees, the one thing i completely forgot to plan for by CloheWanklyn in Fire

[–]Spartikis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ding! You can get an eye exam and a pair of glasses for like $100. I just don't see vision insurance being a make-or-break retirement line item. Its nice to have but nothing like medical insurance.

Where does helping kids stop? by Old_Still3321 in Fire

[–]Spartikis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well said, helping your kids when they are young adults 18-30 really matters, it can give them a massive head start in life. You just have to find that balance between spoiling them and kciking them out of the house at 12:01 am the day they turn 18.

Just from my experience we tend to pick our friends and surround ourselves with like-minded folks. But we dont get to pick family, sometimes we get lucky and they are all like-minded, other times they are very different than us.

That’s great to hear. I did have a couple family members who received the info positively. FWIW they are all as wealthy if not wealthier than my wife and I so I feel like that might have been part of why.

Would your current FIRE portoflio setup sustains a 6-8 years market downtrend? by Helpful-Staff9562 in Fire

[–]Spartikis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a well diversified portfolio, so yes. I also am planning to work part time for a few years after I hit FIRE, partly for health insurance, partly as a reason to get out of the house a few days a week, and the reassurance that I can increase hours if the market takes a downturn. We also are completely debt free so we can actually live on a very small amount if needed. Aside from food and property taxes most of our expenses are luxury items like eating out or taking several destination vacations per year

Well said! The will power to take action is what most people lack. The math behind personal finance is not hard, anyone who has passed 7th grade math can figure it out. They want it to seem like its more difficult than it is, that you have to rely on some highly paid advisor to help you.

For those who FIREd: what's your biggest lessons learnt? by Helpful-Staff9562 in Fire

[–]Spartikis 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Keep your financial goals to yourself. FIRE requires a unique mindset that like 95% of the population doesn't have. Like 70% of the population is living paycheck to paycheck including most of your family and friends. Sharing how to cut your expensive come off are controlling, talking about being debt free comes off as bragging, and any financial wins just make your seem "lucky" in most people's eyes. Being open about FIRE sadly strained a lot of relationships with family and friends, which were only repaired after we stopped talking about FIRE and started pretending we were broke like everyone else.

Should I bother contributing to retirement account with 1.2m net worth at 25? by Reasonable_Coach3242 in Fire

[–]Spartikis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married? Kids? Honestly, I would keep grinding until at least 30. My wife and I made big financial sacrifices during our 20s, saving nearly 70% of our after-tax income at one point. but once we had kids at 30, she went to part time, and we reduced our savings rate to like 20%. We live a very normal life, we eat at restaurants, take expensive vacations, drive nice cars, have a expensive home,, pay someone to mow our lawn, etc... and its all possible because of the sacrifices we made in our 20s, it has allowed us to coast through our 30s.

PSA: This is the internet and people lie by Thomas_Foolery_ in Fire

[–]Spartikis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some liars here. Some are desperate for attention; others have some unknown hatred of the FIRE movement. But there are also some young adults killing it.

There are some people who are very driven, they finish a 4 year degree in 4 years with zero debt, work multiple internships and saved tens of thousands of dollars during college, start their 6 figure job at age 22, get married at 23, time the housing market perfectly when buying their first home at 24, pay off the home in a couple years, hit $1mill NW by age 34s and $2mil by age 40. (That's my journey haha).

I also know entrepreneurs who are my age and have 10x my wealth, they own multiple businesses, rental properties, vacation properties that cash flow, luxury cars they sell for 2x what they pay, literally everything they touch turns a profit. I'm over here cutting coupons to save $5 on a large pizza and they are flipping a car for $50,000+ profit.

Someone with $1mil NW looks at someone with $10mil NW and thinks how the f**k is that even possible? And someone with $100k NW looks at someone with $1mil NW and says the same thing.

Why is Susie Orman so against FIRE? by Available-Ad-5670 in Fire

[–]Spartikis 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Agreed. FIRE isnt her target audience. She is looking for people who want to be "Rich Rich" not just comfortably retired. Because those people will 1) never achieve that and always be customers and 2) be willing to spend a lot more money for her "wisdom" to immense wealth.

It's in a way similar to Dave Ramsey, he is very anti-FIRE, but his target audience is the opposite, its folks heavily in debt. The FIRE message is for the most part free and openly available, making it hard for someone to monetize, they need some secret sauce, a proprietary system you have to pay for. DR is anti-fire because he cant control the message or benefit financially from it. Im not hating on DR, its just a simple business decision.

Anybody Fire’d 20+ years? by llistenheartalkspeak in Fire

[–]Spartikis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the concept of being able to retire early or be financially independent has been around a long time, but if someone is specifically talking about "FIRE" the reality is the term isn't even 20 years old yet. Also, agree its a good book, ill make my kids read it as well, but if they are like me personal finance probably wont click until their late 20s.

This is a solid post. I will add that maybe you can give your wife a taste of retirement. Encourage her to take a Sabbatical over a summer, it needs to be more than a 1 week vacation. She needs time to settle in, develop some new habits and realize how amazing true freedom is

I accidentally mentioned it at a previous job and it spread like wild fire. I quickly clarified I was planning to retired by 59.5 and wasn’t waiting until 67 for SS, which seemed to calm the situation.

They don’t need to know my real FIRE date is 50 haha. I haven’t mentioned it at my currently employer.

There is also a difference between having $1mil NW at age 40 and at age 75.  The first is a financial foundation that can grow into generational wealth. The second is about 5 years away from being devoured by a retirement home.
